Create or schedule the YouTube event, add its server URL and stream key to the encoder, configure the prerecorded videos to play in order (and repeat if needed), preview the feed, then go live. For an unattended run, test the complete setup first: YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation, especially for broadcasts longer than 12 hours.
Before you set up the stream
Make sure the channel can go live
Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its eligibility guidance also lists channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and a minimum streamer age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning the broadcast.
Clear every video and audio component
Being recorded already does not make a video eligible to rebroadcast. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to every visual and audio element, including music, and to retain any resulting archive where applicable. YouTube holds the content provider responsible for those rights, and live streams remain subject to its Community Guidelines. Review the livestream terms and copyright guidance for live streams.
Choose where the video playback will run

YouTube describes encoders as software or standalone hardware, so this workflow does not require a particular brand or a camera, microphone, or capture card when your source is prerecorded video. YouTube’s encoder help page also names Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; check its current features and terms directly rather than assuming a particular price or capability. Set up an overnight stream with a local encoder
1. Create the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or reuse suitable stream settings. Schedule the event in advance if you want a planned start time.
- Choose the event’s visibility and other controls in Studio. Keep the event details and watch-page access appropriate for your intended audience.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating or scheduling a stream. Stream settings and key controls are described in Manage live stream settings.
2. Build the prerecorded playlist in the encoder
Open an encoder that supports playback of local prerecorded files and playlists. Add the videos in the order you want them to play, and enable repeat or looping if the program should continue after the last item. YouTube Studio receives the encoder’s feed; it does not turn arbitrary local files into a playback playlist for you. The encoder (or an optional streaming service) handles that source playback.

Check that the files play correctly, their audio is audible, and transitions between items do not leave long unintended gaps. If the playlist is shorter than the overnight broadcast, decide whether it should repeat or finish. Do not leave looping behavior to chance: confirm the selected encoder’s playback controls before going live.
3. Connect the encoder to YouTube
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event.
- In the encoder’s destination or streaming settings, paste the URL and key into the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private: it is the credential that lets a sender deliver a feed to your YouTube event. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- If you want encrypted ingest, use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key. HLS is not the default choice for this basic setup; YouTube describes it as an alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP and notes its higher latency.

4. Set a sensible output and test the feed
Use an output format and bitrate supported by both your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate. The cited YouTube pages do not establish one universal bitrate or keyframe setting for every format, so do not apply a guessed “overnight” number. Check the current encoder setup instructions for the format you intend to send, then confirm the encoder reports a stable output and Live Control Room receives it.
YouTube recommends upload capacity for the selected bitrate plus 20% headroom. That is preparation guidance, not a guarantee of continuity. Its streaming tips recommend setting up early, previewing in Live Control Room, checking the stream on the channel/watch page and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video. A wired Ethernet connection can be a reasonable choice when available, but it does not guarantee a stable stream.

- Preview the feed in Live Control Room before going live.
- Listen for missing, clipped, or unexpectedly silent audio, and watch for black frames or playback freezes.
- Check the event’s watch page from a separate device and confirm the intended privacy setting.
- Run a test long enough to exercise the playlist transition and repeat behavior, not just the first few seconds.
5. Start the broadcast and end it deliberately
- Start sending from the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- When the preview is correct, click Go live if the event workflow requires it.
- Check the public or intended private/unlisted watch page after the event starts.
- When you are finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop sending from the encoder.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not promise an automatic archive for a longer broadcast, so do not rely on an overnight stream’s recording being saved if the planned duration reaches or exceeds that threshold.

Local equipment and network interruptions
In a local setup, playback depends on the computer or encoder, the source files, and the network continuing to work. Disable sleep or automatic shutdown if your operating system would otherwise stop playback, and confirm the computer will not restart for a scheduled update during the run. These are practical precautions, not a YouTube guarantee. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could break a stream.

Optional encoder failover
For a higher-availability setup, YouTube discusses testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and verify that the player switches to a backup encoder. This is an advanced option, not a requirement for every creator. Read the relevant section of YouTube’s streaming tips and test the complete failover arrangement before relying on it.
Common problems and fixes
- No signal in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder has the correct event’s server URL and stream key, that it is actively sending, and that the network allows the connection. Re-copy the credentials from Studio if needed.
- Preview appears but the event is not live: Start the feed first, wait for the preview, then use Go live in Studio if the event requires that separate action.
- Playback stops after one pass: Turn on repeat in the encoder’s playlist settings and test the end-to-start transition before the overnight run.
- Audio or video is missing or incorrect: Inspect the encoder’s selected source and output, then preview and monitor both audio and video in Live Control Room before starting the event.
- The stream drops during the night: Check the local network and encoder state, and use YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom as a planning target. Headroom does not prevent every interruption; test backup failover if the broadcast warrants that added complexity.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio, then replace the saved key in the encoder. Treat it like a password.
Copyright, archives, and monetization
A technically successful loop is not automatically authorized or monetizable. You remain responsible for rights to the videos and music, and YouTube can enforce copyright rules on a live stream. Also, YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams: repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy. The policy page’s July 15, 2025 update clarified the treatment of repetitive or mass-produced content; that date does not mean every repeated stream receives the same outcome. Original programming is not automatically approved for monetization, and streaming for many hours does not itself guarantee earnings. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
