Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo broadcast a white-noise video on YouTube Live overnight, loop the video in a streaming encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder’s output to YouTube. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source and turn on Loop. YouTube’s Loop button in the watch player only repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not create a livestream.
Before you start
- Confirm live access: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, so check well before the night you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- Prepare a video you have permission to stream. The setup steps do not determine whether you have rights to the video or audio. Use your own recording or material licensed for this use.
- Choose an encoder route: OBS is a software encoder that runs on a computer. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders, so a computer is not the only possible setup. Choose equipment that supports your file and intended workflow; there is no universal hardware requirement established for every white-noise video.
Set up an overnight loop with OBS
- Install OBS Studio and create a scene. A scene is the output you will send to YouTube. Add a source by selecting Sources → + → Media Source, then create a new source or select an existing one.
- Select the local video file and enable looping. In the Media Source properties, choose the file and check Loop. OBS documents that this setting restarts the file after playback completes. Its Media Source supports common local formats including MP4 and MOV; see OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Check the scene in the OBS preview. Confirm the picture is visible and that the audio meter responds if the file contains sound. If you want a static image with continuous white noise, make sure the audio and visual sources are configured as intended rather than assuming the video file contains both.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and set up a stream in the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting an encoder with the stream URL and stream key.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, share it, or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Test before going live. Start the encoder output and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Verify that both video and audio are present, then follow YouTube’s workflow to start the live event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream before and during a broadcast; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
Choose settings that fit your connection
There is no single bitrate that is necessary for every white-noise stream: the right encoder settings depend on the video resolution, frame rate, encoder, and available upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance as the reference for the format you select. The simple looping workflow does not require HDR or HLS.
- Set a resolution and frame rate that suit the source video and your connection; avoid selecting a higher output than you need.
- Use an encoder and protocol supported by YouTube for the chosen settings. YouTube’s guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options with protocol-specific qualifications.
- Leave upload bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A looped source does not protect the broadcast from an unstable connection.
Make an overnight broadcast safer to manage
Looping prevents the file from simply ending when it reaches its last frame; it does not guarantee that the broadcast will stay online all night. Keep the computer, OBS, and network connection running, and monitor stream health and audio/video during the session when possible. Test the complete setup before relying on it overnight.
Plan for the archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise a complete automatic archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or more. If preserving the full session matters, plan for a stream shorter than 12 hours or make a separate recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Understand what the viewer’s Loop button does
YouTube’s watch-player Loop control repeats a video for that viewer; it does not turn an ordinary upload into a live broadcast. For an actual YouTube Live stream, an encoder must continuously send the looped media as its output. The distinction is described in YouTube’s video loop instructions and encoder setup guide.
Troubleshooting common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops instead of repeating. | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source, or the wrong source/file is selected. | Open the source properties, verify the selected file, and enable Loop. Confirm the behavior in OBS before connecting to YouTube. |
| YouTube does not show a live preview. | The encoder is not connected with the matching stream URL and key, or the stream has not been started in the intended workflow. | Compare the URL and key in YouTube Studio with OBS’s streaming settings, check the Live Control Room status, and restart the encoder output if needed. Never share the key while troubleshooting. |
| The stream has no picture or no sound. | The wrong file/source is selected, the source is obscured or absent from the scene, or the file has no audio / audio is not reaching the encoder. | Inspect the OBS preview, source visibility and audio meters; test playback locally before starting the broadcast. |
| The stream drops during the night. | A network disruption, encoder interruption, or computer shutdown can stop the outgoing stream. | Check the connection and encoder status, leave bandwidth headroom, and test for stability before the overnight session. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted operation. |
| The full overnight session is not in the archive. | The broadcast lasted 12 hours or longer, for which YouTube does not promise a complete automatic archive. | Keep the stream under 12 hours if relying on automatic archiving, or create a separate recording. |
| You cannot start a live broadcast. | Live access may not be enabled, the channel may not meet eligibility requirements, or first-time enablement may still be processing. | Review YouTube’s eligibility requirements and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live streaming to become available. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection running overnight, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the white-noise recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
