As a quick conversion, every watt sustained around the clock uses 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month. Measure your own setup to get a defensible estimate, then apply the marginal energy rate on your electricity bill.
Estimate monthly electricity use from average wall power
Use this formula:
Average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 = monthly kWh
The 30-day calculation means each watt sustained continuously uses 0.72 kWh per month. For a 365-day year, each sustained watt uses 8.76 kWh. These are unit conversions, not measurements of a particular PC or ambient-stream workload.

These are illustrative arithmetic scenarios, not representative readings for a specific kind of computer. A power-supply rating, processor rating, or advertised maximum does not tell you what the whole PC draws continuously while streaming. Include a monitor, speakers, router, or other equipment only if they are part of the measured or calculated setup.

Measure your own PC while it is streaming
A plug-in electricity meter can measure the equipment’s wall use. The key is to measure it in the state you actually plan to use: stream running, with the display and peripherals either included or excluded deliberately.
- Define what is included. Decide whether you are measuring only the PC or also the monitor, speakers, router, and any other devices needed for the stream. Connect the included equipment through the meter if its consumption should count.
- Run the intended workload. Start the ambient stream and leave the computer in its normal streaming state. A brief idle reading may not capture changes in workload.
- Measure over a representative period. Record the meter’s kWh reading and elapsed hours. If it reports fluctuating watts instead, use an average across the measurement period. The U.S. Department of Energy advises that fluctuating power use should be measured over time and divided by the measurement period to determine average power (DOE measurement guidance).
- Calculate average watts if the meter reports kWh. Divide measured kWh by elapsed hours, then multiply by 1,000. For example, 0.6 kWh over 10 hours is an average of 60 W.
- Convert to a month. Multiply average watts by 24 and 30, then divide by 1,000 to get monthly kWh.
Estimate the cost using your Indian electricity tariff
Multiply the calculated monthly kWh by the marginal energy rate applicable to your household. Add variable duties or surcharges if you want a fuller bill-impact estimate. Do not assume that a single “India electricity rate” applies: charges vary by state, utility, consumer category, slab, and billing rules. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff-and-duty compilation contains FY 2024–25 information, but your current bill or distribution utility’s current order is the better source for your household’s rate (CEA tariff-and-duty reports).

Fixed charges generally do not rise in the same way as energy charges when you add kWh, so do not include them in a simple per-unit calculation unless your tariff warrants it. Also check whether your bill applies time-of-day rates. A Ministry of Power announcement dated 23 June 2023 described solar-hour tariffs as 10%–20% below the normal tariff and peak-hour tariffs as 10%–20% higher, and said ToD tariffs would apply to non-agricultural consumers by 1 April 2025 at the latest. That announcement does not establish the current tariff for any particular household; check your bill or utility order (Ministry of Power announcement).
Why published computer energy figures may not match a 24/7 stream
Annual-use figures published for equipment comparisons are not direct estimates of a computer held active around the clock to stream. For example, U.S. Department of Energy desktop purchasing examples based on ENERGY STAR Qualified Products List values as of December 2024 report 12 kWh/year for a best-available integrated or switchable-graphics example, 52 kWh/year for an ENERGY STAR example, and 208 kWh/year for a less-efficient example. The same guidance gives notebook examples of 3, 15, and 41 kWh/year respectively. These are U.S. purchasing comparisons, not Indian figures or measurements of a continuous ambient-stream workload (DOE computer energy-use examples).

The DOE also gives 52 kWh/year for a qualifying 27-inch 1080p monitor and 72 kWh/year for a less-efficient comparison. Those figures are useful as equipment-efficiency context, but they do not tell you the consumption of your monitor in your actual setup; the associated cost example uses a U.S. federal-facility electricity price, not an Indian residential tariff (DOE monitor energy-use examples).
