To stream a local video file to YouTube Live on Linux, create a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with real-time input and an output format YouTube accepts. Use the RTMPS URL where available, keep the key private, and verify the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before going live.
Before you start
- A Linux machine with FFmpeg installed and access to the video file you want to stream.
- A YouTube channel able to use Live Control Room and a stream created or scheduled there.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen video and audio bitrate.
- The stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public examples, screenshots, logs, shared shell history, or public repositories.
The exact command depends on the file’s streams and codecs, the encoders available in your FFmpeg build, and the endpoint YouTube provides. Test privately with the actual file and connection rather than assuming one command suits every Linux system.
Create the YouTube stream and get its endpoint
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Do not use an endpoint or key copied from an unrelated example.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control described in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions to reveal and copy the secure URL. RTMPS is RTMP transported over TLS/SSL.
- Keep the key private. If it is disclosed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement. YouTube documents the key’s use and reset workflow in Manage live stream settings; the required account role may affect who can change it.
Choose a compatible FFmpeg output
FFmpeg’s official command-line documentation explains that options generally apply to the next input or output, so placement matters. Inspect your file and build before choosing a route; for example, ffmpeg -i input.mp4 reports the streams and codecs, while ffmpeg -encoders lists available encoders. The exact output mapping may need adjustment if the file has no audio, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or unusual streams.
Recommended starting point: encode H.264 video and AAC audio
This gives you control over output bitrate and keyframe interval and matches a common YouTube RTMP/RTMPS workflow. Replace VIDEO.mp4, the endpoint, key, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with values appropriate to your file and connection. Do not publish the real key.

ffmpeg -re -i "VIDEO.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example assumes the FFmpeg build includes libx264 and AAC encoding, the selected endpoint accepts the RTMP-family FLV output, and a 30 fps output is suitable. The -re option is before the input, causing FFmpeg to read the local file at its native frame rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. The optional audio map (-map 0:a:0?) lets the command continue if the file has no audio. If the selected stream URL and key are presented separately by YouTube, construct the endpoint using the format YouTube provides for that stream rather than guessing its path.
What the key video and audio options do
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream;-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if present. Adjust mappings when the desired track is not the first one.-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video. Use an encoder actually present in your build; a missing encoder produces an error rather than an automatic substitute.-r 30sets output frame rate to 30 fps. Match the source and intended delivery where practical; YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.-g 60 -keyint_min 60with 30 fps targets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. At 60 fps, a two-second interval is 120 frames. YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizegovern the video rate-control target and buffer behavior. The example uses 5 Mbps as a starting point for 1080p30 H.264, not as a universal setting; choose for the actual output and sustainable upload rate.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes stereo audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, values aligned with YouTube’s listed recommendations. If the source has no audio, omit the audio options if needed.-f flvselects the FLV muxer used in FFmpeg’s RTMP example. Keep the output URL last so output options apply to that destination.
Copy existing streams only when compatible
If the file already contains video and audio codecs accepted by YouTube for the selected ingest mode, stream copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU use. For a compatible H.264/AAC file, a possible form is:

ffmpeg -re -i "VIDEO.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Copying preserves the existing encoded streams, so it does not let you correct an unsuitable codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe spacing. Verify compatibility and test the preview; if YouTube rejects the feed or the quality is unsuitable, encode instead.
Set resolution and bitrate for the connection
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. The exact encoder and bitrate should match your FFmpeg build, target resolution and frame rate, and reliable upload capacity. The figures below are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations as checked on October 3, 2026; they are not guarantees that a particular connection will sustain the stream.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are video figures, not a total connection budget: allow room for audio and network variation. A 5 Mbps video setting in the example is below YouTube’s stated 1080p30 recommended figure, though at its listed minimum; consider lowering resolution or improving the available upload capacity rather than letting a marginal connection repeatedly drop packets. Consult YouTube’s complete encoder settings and bitrate table for H.265 and AV1 recommendations and other resolutions.
YouTube also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR as recommendations. Apply these only if the input and encoder can provide them correctly; do not blindly force settings that conflict with the file or target format.
Run FFmpeg and confirm YouTube receives the stream
- Use the tested command in a private terminal or script with the real URL and key. Avoid saving a key in a shared command history or log. If your environment requires credentials to be kept out of command text, use an appropriately secured local method and test that FFmpeg receives the exact endpoint.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, encoder errors, and ongoing frame progress. A command that starts is not proof that YouTube has accepted or is receiving the feed.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that motion looks representative of the actual programme.
- When the event is scheduled and the preview is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while the event runs.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg’s output and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that applies to a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
- Recheck the exact stream URL and key copied from Live Control Room. A typo or mismatched event can send the encoder elsewhere or prevent YouTube from recognizing the feed.
- Confirm that the selected ingest protocol matches the URL and that the FFmpeg build supports it. Check FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Verify the file has the mapped streams you expect. If the command selects a nonexistent required stream, revise the maps; the optional audio map only makes audio optional, not video.
RTMPS shows an SSL error or times out
Use the RTMPS endpoint revealed in Live Control Room rather than constructing one from memory. Check that it begins with rtmps, not rtmp, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that port 443 may be specified where needed; follow the copied endpoint and its protocol instructions.

The stream connects but stutters or reports poor health
- Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the upload connection can sustain the feed, then test again with representative motion and audio.
- Check that the output is configured for CBR and that the chosen bitrate corresponds to the codec and target quality. A bitrate target alone cannot compensate for an unreliable connection.
- Use
-refor a local file input. It is meant to pace file reading for live output; do not apply a low read rate to a live capture device or incoming stream, where throttling can cause packet loss.
The encoder rejects an option or codec
Check the installed FFmpeg build and available encoders, then replace unavailable encoders or remove unsupported options. FFmpeg option ordering matters: input options belong before their input, and output options before the output URL. If the file already has compatible streams, test stream copy; otherwise use encoders that your build provides.
The stream key may have been exposed
Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room and replace it in the local command or configuration. Treat the new key as a credential; do not include it in screenshots, public examples, or repositories.

Having a local copy of a video does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Before streaming a documentary, music, archive footage, or other material, confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission covering live transmission and the territories and uses involved. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream; follow the notices shown in Studio and the applicable YouTube policies. Repeated or substantially reused material can also raise channel monetization eligibility questions even when a stream technically works. Review rights and channel policy separately from the technical encoder setup.
