You can use FFmpeg to send a lesson, playlist, camera feed, or generated slate to YouTube Live, but a reliable 24/7 broadcast takes more than a running command: you need an always-on host, stable upload, stream-health monitoring, and a tested recovery plan. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; FFmpeg encodes your chosen source and publishes it. This guide uses YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and explains the parts you must adapt to your source and setup.
What you need before starting
- An FFmpeg build with the required input, video/audio encoders, and RTMP(S) protocol support. Available encoders and options vary by build.
- A source to broadcast: for example, a prerecorded lesson, a playlist, a live camera, or a generated graphic. Each source needs its own input handling.
- A YouTube Live event and its server URL and stream key, available through YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source-control repositories, and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains how to copy these values into an encoder.
- A host that can remain available, sufficient sustained upload capacity, and someone or something to monitor stream health and respond to failures.
The technical settings below describe YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian connection or host can sustain them. The official guidance does not establish an India-specific ISP, server, legal, or licensing recommendation; check requirements for your actual content and deployment.
Choose YouTube Live settings for FFmpeg
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Codec-specific bitrate guidance differs, so consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec and resolution you choose.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMPS recommended; RTMP(S) listed for encoder ingestion | Use the secure RTMPS server URL shown for your live event where available. Keep the stream key private. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 listed; up to 60 fps | Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and that your host can encode it continuously. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use a constant target rate for the live encode rather than a variable-rate target. |
| Keyframes | 2 seconds recommended; maximum interval 4 seconds | Set the GOP/keyframe interval to match the frame rate and the two-second target. |
| H.264, 720p30 video | 3 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum | These are YouTube’s published encoder values, not a measurement of your upload connection. |
| H.264, 1080p30 video | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | Check that sustained upload capacity can accommodate video plus audio and network overhead. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 listed; advanced stereo recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz | Verify that the source actually has the intended audio, and listen to a test before relying on it. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use this as the SDR target where it matches your source and workflow. |
For a straightforward H.264 SDR starting profile, use progressive video, CBR, AAC stereo, and a two-second keyframe interval. At 720p30, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 video; at 1080p30 it recommends 14 Mbps. Those figures are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stable delivery on a given network. Leave headroom for audio and protocol overhead, and test at the actual destination and quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance before settling on a different codec or resolution.

How do I stream a video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg?
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Use the values displayed for that event rather than assuming a universal endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the event workflow.
- Decide how FFmpeg will read the source. A local file, playlist, camera input, and generated slate are not interchangeable. Confirm the input format and whether it needs looping, real-time pacing, timestamp handling, or other source-specific options.
- Select an encoder and output profile. Choose an FFmpeg video encoder and audio encoder supported by your build. Configure the resolution, frame rate, CBR target, keyframe interval, audio settings, and output container/protocol to align with YouTube’s current guidance.
- Send the output to the event’s ingest destination. The conceptual path is input → encode and mux → YouTube RTMP(S) server URL plus stream key. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing in its protocol documentation; Google explains YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
- Protect the credential. Do not commit a command containing the key to a repository or expose it in a public log. Use a protected environment or secrets store appropriate to the host, and restrict access to it.
- Preflight the complete stream. Start a test with movement and audio representative of the real program. Confirm the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking health messages during the event.
There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for every source and installation: input syntax, encoder availability, looping behavior, and RTMPS support depend on the source and FFmpeg build. Build and test the command around those parts rather than pasting a generic example with an exposed key. A process that has not exited is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
How can I loop a video 24/7 on YouTube?
For a prerecorded lesson, first establish that the file plays correctly from beginning to end, with the intended audio and no unwanted gaps. Then configure the FFmpeg input so it repeats the selected content and the output is paced as a live stream. The exact loop and timing options depend on whether you are repeating one file or advancing through a playlist; verify their behavior with your FFmpeg build and source. Watch the YouTube preview and health messages through at least one complete loop before leaving it unattended.

For a camera, do not apply file-loop assumptions: the input is live and its device access, timestamps, and reconnection behavior need separate handling. A generated slate likewise needs a video source and, if required, an audio source. In all cases, YouTube’s ingest settings remain the event URL and key, while the FFmpeg input side changes.
How do I keep an FFmpeg livestream running if the connection drops?
Separate recovery into two problems: restoring the network or host, and restarting or reconnecting the publishing process. YouTube’s encoder guidance calls for monitoring stream health, but its cited documentation does not prescribe one universal FFmpeg restart command or 24/7 supervision strategy.

- Monitor the right signals. Check the FFmpeg process and logs, host availability, sustained upload, and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health messages. A successful process alone does not establish that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- Test failure and recovery. In a controlled test, verify what happens after a brief network interruption, a host restart, and an FFmpeg exit. Confirm that the process can resume with the same event credentials and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal.
- Use supervision deliberately. An external supervisor or service manager may restart a failed process, but restarting does not repair an ISP outage, broken source, expired or replaced key, or host failure. Decide who receives alerts and can respond.
- Secure recovery procedures. Store the key in a protected location accessible to the service, not in public scripts or logs. Document how to replace it and update the host if it is exposed.
A local computer can be interrupted by power, network, or device problems. Hosted compute shifts some responsibilities to a service operator but still requires you to assess availability, administration, credentials, costs, monitoring, and recovery. The official sources here do not rank providers or identify a best India-specific hosting choice.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 livestream?
YouTube’s encoder workflow says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours will be automatically archived as one complete recording. If a complete archive matters, plan deliberate shorter sessions or a separate local recording, then verify current YouTube behavior before depending on it. The condition is described in YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Copyright and education-stream checks
Educational purpose does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a recording, music, images, or other material. Before scheduling a stream, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for the content, including any embedded media, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streams and monetization if relevant. The technical encoder guidance does not determine the Indian legal or licensing position for a particular lesson or channel; that depends on the material and circumstances.
- Check permissions for the full lesson and any music, clips, slides, or third-party visuals it contains.
- Ensure the loop adds genuine value for viewers; simply replaying material does not guarantee eligibility for monetization or avoid platform policy review.
- Keep a separate recording if you need an archive, rather than assuming a very long live session will be preserved in full.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel stream rather than learning to operate an FFmpeg host, StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not broadcast from a camera and streams to YouTube only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can FFmpeg stream a live camera as well as a prerecorded lesson?
Yes. FFmpeg can publish different input types, but camera device access and live-source timing need different input handling from looping a file.
Does a recommended bitrate guarantee a stable stream from India?
No. YouTube’s bitrate figures are encoder recommendations; they do not measure or guarantee any particular Indian connection.
Can I use StreamNeo for a live camera feed?
No. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
