VLC can repeat a video on your computer, but that alone does not send it to YouTube Live. A live loop needs YouTube Studio’s stream URL and key plus an encoder that can send a compatible feed. VLC’s desktop documentation describes stream-output tools and a playlist broadcast example to local HTTP—not an official, verified VLC-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS setup—so confirm your VLC build supports the required output before relying on it.
First, choose the result you want
- A live broadcast: An encoder sends video and audio to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Repeating a file in VLC handles playback, not delivery to YouTube.
- Repeated viewing of an existing upload: A viewer can use YouTube’s Loop command to repeat playback. That does not create a live broadcast, scheduled event, or encoder feed.
VLC’s documented desktop playlist-broadcast example sends a sequence of files to a local HTTP destination. It demonstrates playlist and stream-output concepts, but that HTTP destination is not a YouTube ingest address. The available official documentation does not establish a current desktop VLC recipe for sending a loop directly to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. See VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 stream-output documentation and its VLM playlist-broadcast example.
What you need for a live loop
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- A video file, or a playlist if you want successive videos rather than one repeated file.
- An encoder that can send a compatible feed to YouTube’s ingest server. Do not assume every VLC desktop build exposes the needed YouTube-compatible output and codec/mux combination.
- A stable upload connection with enough headroom for the chosen stream bitrate.
You do not need to buy a camera, capture card, or other production hardware just to stream an existing video file. YouTube says expensive equipment is not needed to get started.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. If this is the first time enabling live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create or schedule a stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one in the Manage tab. Scheduling provides a watch-page URL to share and lets viewers opt into reminders.
- Copy the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the server or stream URL and the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in shared logs.
- Keep the event open for the test. You will need the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information before and during the broadcast.
Prepare VLC and confirm the encoder path
For one repeated video
Use VLC’s repeat control only to repeat playback locally. The exact controls vary by VLC platform and version; VLC Android documentation describes repeat mode for the current video, but that is not evidence of an identical desktop interface or a YouTube output workflow. On desktop, check the controls and stream-output options in your installed build, then verify that the chosen output can be sent to YouTube with its required server URL, key, codecs, and container.

For a sequence of videos
VLC’s desktop VLM documentation shows how playlist inputs can advance through files while keeping stream output open between items. Its documented example broadcasts through local HTTP. Do not substitute that local HTTP address for YouTube’s ingest URL or assume the example is a ready-to-use YouTube configuration.
If VLC does not expose a compatible output
Use an encoder application that supports YouTube’s current ingest requirements and can either play the source file itself or receive VLC’s output. Check that application’s current compatibility and configuration separately; the available official VLC and YouTube material does not verify a specific third-party bridge or a universal VLC-to-YouTube command.

Match the feed to YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every loop.
| Video setting | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not universal requirements. Check the applicable values for your chosen output in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s corresponding fields; never place the key in a publicly visible command or example.

Test the loop before announcing it
- Start the encoder feed while the Live Control Room event is open.
- Wait for YouTube’s preview, then confirm the image and audio are present and in sync.
- Use representative sections of the video when checking: include motion, quiet and loud passages, and any changes between files in a playlist.
- Review stream health and audio/video quality in Live Control Room. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or output settings and test again.
- Only share the scheduled watch-page URL or announce the broadcast once the preview and stream health look correct.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, checking the preview before going live, and monitoring stream health and quality during the broadcast. See its encoder guidance and stream-health troubleshooting guidance.
End the stream and understand the archive
When the loop is finished, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior does not make a viewer’s Loop command into a live stream; the two functions remain separate.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC repeats locally, but YouTube shows no feed: Repeating playback is not the same as sending an encoder stream. Confirm the encoder is actually connected to YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and that YouTube Live Control Room shows an incoming preview.
- You cannot find a YouTube or RTMPS destination in VLC: VLC’s documented playlist example is for local HTTP, not YouTube ingest. Check the capabilities of your installed build; if it lacks a compatible output, use an encoder that supports YouTube’s settings rather than treating the local HTTP example as a direct-ingest recipe.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck the copied server URL and key, and confirm the encoder’s output uses a supported codec/container combination and RTMPS where available. Keep the key private while correcting the configuration.
- The preview stutters or stream health is poor: The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate, leave connection headroom, then test again.
- Audio or video quality is wrong: Check the encoder’s codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and output levels; verify with a representative test before starting the public broadcast.
- Live streaming is not available immediately: If the channel has never streamed live before, enablement can take up to 24 hours according to YouTube. Allow for that delay before a scheduled event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than learning an encoder pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists, so nothing has to stay running at home. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing, or start your free day.
