For consistent podcast audio on YouTube Live, set microphone gain at the source, balance speech and other inputs in your streaming software, use gentle compression to control unusually loud moments, and place a limiter last to catch peaks. Then record and listen to a representative rehearsal before the broadcast. YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance does not specify an integrated loudness target such as a required LUFS value.
Why audio levels vary in a live podcast
Level changes can begin before audio reaches the encoder: a host moves farther from the microphone, a guest speaks more loudly, music is mixed too high, or a source input is set poorly. Software processing can help manage ordinary variation, but it cannot undo clipping that has already occurred, remove room noise, fix bad microphone placement, or restore a disconnected channel.
Think of the signal chain in order: microphone and room, device or mixer gain, source balance in the streaming software, dynamics processing, then the stream. Fix problems as early as possible rather than trying to solve every issue with the master fader.
Set up the microphone and gain first
Make the source predictable
- Choose a quiet room and keep the microphone at a consistent distance and angle throughout the show.
- Set input gain using the microphone’s control, audio interface, or mixer input gain where available. OBS advises adjusting gain at the device first, then listening again in OBS: OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Speak at the volume you expect to use on air, including a louder passage. Adjust gain so ordinary speech is clearly present without reaching digital clipping.
A built-in microphone may offer fewer input controls than an interface or mixer. A multi-speaker podcast with separate microphones benefits from independently controllable inputs; the need to balance guests and music also affects whether a mixer or streaming-software controls are useful. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance discusses microphones, preamps, mixers, and more advanced setups: YouTube live-streaming setup guide.

Read OBS meters correctly and balance sources
In OBS, set the microphone, music, alerts, and remote callers independently before adjusting the master output. OBS’s practical mixer guidance places speech in the upper yellow region and background music or alerts in the green; treat that as a visual mixing guide, not a universal numeric loudness target.
The main mixer bar is a peak meter: it indicates the peak level viewers will hear, not integrated loudness over an entire program. OBS also describes a smaller moving marker as a VU-style indicator that reflects a short averaging interval more closely. Its technical guide discusses a -20 dBFS alignment level and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum meter level as explanations of OBS meter conventions, not as speech targets for every stream: OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Digital audio should remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. Watch the peak-hold indicator for recent loudest levels, but do not rely on meters alone: they will not reveal every problem, including room echo, harshness, or an unbalanced stereo connection.
Use compression for variation and a limiter for peaks
Apply compression gently to speech
If the host’s ordinary and loud speech levels vary substantially, add an OBS Compressor filter to the microphone source. The compressor reduces signals above its threshold; its controls include threshold, ratio, attack, release, and output gain. Start conservatively and adjust while listening, because the right threshold depends on the voice and the level arriving from the source. Over-compression can make speech sound unnatural. See OBS Compressor Filter.

Put the limiter last
Add an OBS Limiter after other filters in the chain. Its job is to prevent peaks from exceeding the chosen threshold, not to even out all speech or correct a bad input level. OBS’s default limiter threshold is -6 dB; that is a software default, not a universal recommendation. Choose a ceiling that leaves practical headroom and check the result by listening. OBS specifically says the limiter should be the last filter in the chain: OBS Limiter Filter.
Follow this pre-show audio check
- Rehearse the real format. Use the usual microphone, room, guest connections, music, and alerts. Include the loudest likely speech and transitions so the test represents the broadcast.
- Balance individual sources. Adjust the microphone and other inputs separately in OBS. Listen both at the source and through OBS monitoring while setting levels.
- Add processing only where needed. Use moderate compression on speech if its level varies, then place a limiter last to control peaks. Re-listen after each change.
- Record a normal session. Listen to the recording before going live. OBS recommends recording and listening back; this helps catch problems that a meter cannot show.
- Test YouTube delivery. Where practical, run an unlisted test stream and check the YouTube preview on a second device. YouTube recommends testing with audio representative of the real stream and monitoring stream health: YouTube live encoder and setup guidance.
- During the show, monitor and listen. Watch for peaks and changes in relative source levels, while also listening for echo, distortion, harshness, dropouts, or a source that is missing from one channel.
Use loudness numbers in the right context
AES Technical Document TD1008 (2021) recommends -18 LUFS for speech and -16 LUFS for music when those elements can be normalized separately for internet audio streaming. It also gives -18 LUFS for news/talk, -17 LUFS for mixed format, and -16 LUFS for pop music as distribution integrated-loudness examples. These are AES recommendations for internet audio distribution contexts, not YouTube Live encoder requirements: AES standards search.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies technical settings such as 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate. Those are encoder settings, not loudness targets. The same guidance does not establish an official integrated-LUFS target for YouTube Live, so do not treat -14 LUFS—or any other number—as a YouTube Live requirement: YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube playback options such as Stable volume and Voice boost may be available for some videos and can be controlled by viewers. They are playback-side features, not a dependable way to repair an inconsistent production mix: YouTube audio enhancements.

Troubleshoot common consistency problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Speech sounds distorted at loud moments | Clipping occurred at the microphone, interface, mixer, or earlier in the signal chain. | Reduce gain at the source, check the input and OBS meters, then record and listen again. A compressor placed later cannot repair clipping already introduced. |
| Voice level changes when the host moves | Microphone distance or angle changes. | Stabilize mic position and speaking distance before increasing compression. |
| Music or alerts compete with speech | Background sources are too high relative to the voice. | Lower and balance those sources independently; OBS’s mixer guidance keeps background music and alerts in green while speech reaches upper yellow. |
| Speech is even but sounds unnatural | Compression may be too strong or output gain may have been raised excessively. | Back off the processing and compare a recording with the unprocessed source. |
| Peaks still exceed the desired ceiling | The limiter is absent, not last in the chain, or set too high for the incoming peaks. | Check filter order and threshold, then test again. Do not use the limiter as a substitute for sensible source gain. |
| One side sounds quieter or a guest disappears | A connection, channel balance, or routing issue may be present. | Check the source connection and stereo routing, then monitor the test stream on another device. |
| Meter looks acceptable but audio sounds poor | Meters do not show every audible problem, such as room echo, harshness, or noise. | Listen to a recording and the actual stream preview; correct the room, mic placement, source, or connection rather than chasing a meter reading. |
