For a 24/7 YouTube channel that plays prerecorded podcast episodes, a cloud playlist service is usually the simpler workflow: it streams uploaded videos while your computer is off. OBS is the better fit when the channel needs a live host, guests, changing scenes, or hands-on production. The choice is about who operates the stream and where it runs—not a guarantee that either option will never fail.
Choose based on how the podcast is produced
| Question | OBS on your computer | Cloud playlist service |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Live-hosted or actively produced programming that needs local control of scenes and sources. | Prerecorded episodes arranged into a playlist for continuous playback. |
| Where playback or encoding happens | OBS runs on your computer and sends an encoder feed to YouTube. | The provider plays uploaded media from its infrastructure, according to its playlist controls. |
| What needs to remain available | Your computer, OBS, and a sufficient upload connection. | Your account and service configuration; your own computer does not need to stay on for playlist playback. |
| Main trade-off | More production control, with local setup and connection responsibility. | Less local operation for prerecorded playback, in exchange for provider-specific costs, limits, and service dependencies. |
A hybrid schedule is possible: use OBS for a hosted show and a cloud playlist workflow for the hours when the channel should replay episodes. Each workflow still needs its own setup and monitoring.
What OBS requires for a continuous stream
With OBS, your computer encodes and sends the stream to YouTube. That means the machine, OBS process, and network connection must remain available for the broadcast. OBS’s stated minimum requirements are compatibility baselines, not a guarantee that a computer can stream successfully. CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS lists DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics and Windows 10 or 11 for Windows; Intel or Apple Silicon and macOS 11 or later for macOS; and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics with X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. See the OBS system requirements and OBS Studio overview.
Set up the encoder and verify YouTube’s requirements
- Prepare the YouTube live destination. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio and copy its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in public screenshots. Enter it in OBS’s stream settings for the YouTube destination.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For H.264, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your particular computer or connection can sustain them.
- Match OBS output to the show and connection. Set resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format consistently with YouTube’s guidance. Allow upload headroom rather than setting the bitrate at the full measured capacity of your connection; other traffic and connection variation can interrupt a long-running stream.
- Test before relying on the setup. Run a private or otherwise suitable test with audio and motion similar to the actual show. YouTube specifically says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” During a broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS status rather than assuming a successful start means the stream will stay healthy.
Encoder recommendations can change. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a new stream.

Recovery helps, but is not a substitute for monitoring
OBS offers a configurable automatic reconnect option. It can help the software attempt to reconnect after a disruption, but it does not eliminate the need to monitor the broadcast or address a failed computer, OBS process, or internet connection. The OBS overview guide describes its setup and reconnect features.
What a cloud playlist workflow changes
A cloud service takes uploaded episodes and plays them through a configured YouTube stream. In the provider-described workflow, you arrange the playlist, connect the YouTube destination with a stream key, and let the service handle continuous playback. The benefit for prerecorded programming is that your personal computer and home connection do not have to carry the stream throughout the day. You still depend on correct setup, access to the YouTube channel, and the provider’s operation.

Copyright, permissions, and monetization still matter
Changing the delivery method does not change what you are allowed to broadcast. Use podcast episodes, music, clips, artwork, and other material that you own or have permission to use on YouTube. A continuous playlist should not be treated as permission to rebroadcast third-party content. Check the channel’s applicable YouTube rules and resolve rights issues before scheduling a 24/7 stream. StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist as a planning aid; it does not grant rights or guarantee that YouTube will accept a stream or monetization application.
For planning, StreamNeo also offers an upload-time calculator and a cloud vs PC cost calculator. A fair cost comparison should include not just a cloud subscription, but also the computer and connection that must remain available for a local OBS workflow.

Troubleshoot the workflow you chose
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: check the connection’s available upload capacity, OBS bitrate and output settings, and YouTube’s health messages. Retest with representative audio and motion; lowering output demands may help if the local setup cannot sustain them.
- OBS disconnects and does not recover: confirm the computer and network are still online, verify the stream destination and key, and check OBS’s reconnect configuration. Reconnect attempts cannot fix a machine that is off or a persistent network failure.
- A cloud playlist will not start: verify that the uploaded media and playlist are configured, the correct YouTube channel and stream key are connected, and the account has the required access. Consult the provider’s current setup guidance if those checks do not resolve it.
- The stream runs, but content or monetization is at risk: review rights for every episode and included asset, and check YouTube’s applicable content policies. A successful technical connection does not establish permission to use material.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded episodes, StreamNeo keeps the YouTube stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
