To livestream a podcast episode on YouTube with its artwork, create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, send a video-and-audio feed from an encoder, and place the episode image in that feed. You can also upload a suitable thumbnail for the live event or replay. Keep the square artwork for the podcast playlist separate from the usually 16:9 video thumbnail: YouTube does not automatically turn a podcast cover image into a livestream.
Know which image goes where
YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist and each episode as a video; an MP3 by itself is not a YouTube podcast episode. The playlist’s podcast artwork and an individual live video’s thumbnail are separate placements with different image proportions.
| Placement | Purpose | Image guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast playlist artwork | Identifies the podcast show | Square, 1:1; YouTube recommends 1280×1280 pixels. |
| Live event or replay thumbnail | Represents an individual video in YouTube listings | Generally 16:9 for a regular video thumbnail. YouTube’s thumbnail guidance says podcast playlists should use a 1:1 image rather than the suggested video ratio. |
| Visual inside the livestream | What viewers see while the episode is live | Add the episode artwork as a still image or graphic in your encoder, or use a webcam or another video source. YouTube does not automatically make the cover image into a live video. |
YouTube’s custom-thumbnail help lists JPG and PNG as supported formats; file-size limits vary by device and placement. Check its current guidance before uploading: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the episode
YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check current requirements and enable live streaming ahead of the event, since access may not be immediate: Get started with live streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare the episode audio and any video or still artwork you will send to YouTube.
- Decide whether the stream will use an encoder for a produced layout, or YouTube’s simpler webcam route.
- Use artwork and other material you have rights to use. A podcast’s presence on YouTube does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, clips, images, or other copyrighted material.
- Plan to test with audio and movement similar to the actual show, and leave time to check the preview before the event.
Make the livestream with an encoder
An encoder is the practical choice when you want a still episode image, overlays, external audio equipment, or more control over the production. YouTube also supports webcam streaming; you do not need expensive gear to begin. For a spoken-word show, a microphone can help, but it is optional.
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule it for later and enter the event details.
- Build the video in your encoder. Add the episode audio and a visual source. To show the episode art during the show, add it as a still image or graphic in the encoder; do not assume the podcast playlist image will appear automatically in the live feed.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s server and key fields. Select the intended audio and video inputs. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate must work together. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the relevant combination rather than relying on a bitrate number that may not fit your output. Test before the event.
- Start the feed and inspect the preview. Start streaming from the encoder, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube receives the feed and that the artwork, audio, and framing look right.
- Start the event. When the preview is ready, start the live event in Live Control Room. Monitor stream health and audio during the broadcast.
- Set the video thumbnail. Upload an appropriate thumbnail for the live event or replay in its video details. This is distinct from the square podcast playlist artwork.

Set up the podcast artwork separately
After creating the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio, use the square show artwork for that playlist. YouTube recommends 1280×1280 pixels. Use a separate, typically 16:9 image for the live video thumbnail if that better suits the individual episode. The episode art can be reused within the stream as a visual, but that requires a video source or encoder layout.

Choose webcam or encoder
| Method | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam in YouTube | A straightforward computer broadcast using a camera and microphone | Less suited to designed visuals, overlays, or external production routing. |
| Encoder | A produced podcast stream with still artwork, overlays, or connected audio/video gear | Requires configuring separate software or hardware and testing its connection to Live Control Room. |
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming options. Its encoder guide explains the produced-stream route; its encoder settings guide covers output considerations.
Test the connection, audio, and artwork
Before announcing a broadcast, test the same kind of audio and movement you expect to stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube advises checking outbound upload bandwidth and leaving headroom above the stream bitrate; download speed alone does not establish that your upload connection is sufficient. Use a speed test and review YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending to the selected event, or its server/key settings are wrong. | Compare the encoder’s stream URL and key with the event’s settings, then restart the encoder and wait for the preview. |
| Audio is missing or wrong | The wrong input is selected, the microphone or source is muted, or the encoder’s audio routing is incorrect. | Check the selected input and levels in the encoder, then verify the sound in the YouTube preview before going live. |
| Stream buffers or health is poor | Available upload bandwidth may not reliably support the chosen bitrate. | Check upload capacity, leave headroom, and use a more sustainable encoder setting based on YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Artwork is absent from the broadcast | The playlist image or thumbnail is not itself a video source. | Add the image as a visual element in the encoder, or choose a webcam or other video source. |
| Artwork looks cropped or unsuitable | Square podcast art and a regular video thumbnail use different placements and aspect ratios. | Use square art for the podcast playlist and prepare a separate thumbnail for the live video or replay. |
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel may not meet eligibility requirements or may have a restriction. | Review YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility page and channel status before scheduling the event. |
