You can stream a podcast episode on YouTube Live without a camera: send the audio file and a still image through an encoder such as OBS, then connect that encoder to a YouTube stream. The encoder combines them into live video; the audio file by itself does not create a YouTube video stream. Here’s how to set it up, test it and troubleshoot common problems.
Before you start
Have the podcast audio file, a still image you have permission to use, a computer that can run streaming software, and a YouTube channel eligible to livestream. For this prepared-media setup, you do not need a live microphone, camera, mixer, capture card or dedicated hardware encoder.
- Check eligibility: YouTube says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current help page sets the minimum age to livestream at 16. Check the channel’s current status and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Check rights: Use an episode and artwork you are authorized to broadcast. Owning a podcast recording does not necessarily mean you have permission to rebroadcast every piece of music, clip or image in it.
- Choose an encoder: OBS is one software option. A software encoder is a straightforward fit for one local audio file and one static image; YouTube also documents hardware encoders for more involved productions, but one is not required here. OBS Knowledge Base
Set up the podcast stream in YouTube and OBS
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. On the Stream tab, create a stream or select a scheduled one. Choose public, private or unlisted visibility. Private or unlisted can be useful for a test, but confirm the visibility you want before the audience arrives. Interface labels can change over time. - Add the still image in OBS. In a scene, add an Image source and select the artwork. Size and position it to fill the canvas as intended. The image is the video portion of the broadcast, so check that it is visible in the OBS preview.
- Add the podcast audio. Add a Media Source and select the audio file. Check its playback, volume and mute state; watch the audio meter while it plays. If you want the episode to repeat, verify the media source’s loop or restart behavior in your encoder rather than assuming it repeats by default. Source controls and playback options can vary by software version. OBS Knowledge Base
- Connect OBS to YouTube. If OBS offers a YouTube service preset, select it and follow its prompts. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in the scene or share it. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol. YouTube: Encoder settings for live streaming
- Set and test the output. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Confirm that both the still image and audio are present, start sending from OBS, and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Listen to the audio and check the image before starting the event for viewers.
- Start, monitor and end the event. Start the livestream in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Monitor stream health and audio during the broadcast. When finished, stop sending from OBS and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that statement for a complete archive of a longer stream. Audio, video and connection settings
The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. YouTube’s pages do not state publication years for these specifications. Its recommended bitrate depends on incoming codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the applicable guidance for your chosen output rather than treating one number as universal.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS; 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | Set the encoder’s audio output to match where those controls are available, then listen to the preview. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set this in the encoder’s output or streaming settings. |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use as YouTube’s published guidance for this video format, not as a promise that your connection can sustain it. |
| 480p at 30 fps, H.264 | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended | Choose a bitrate suited to both the format and reliable upload capacity. |
| Upload bandwidth | YouTube recommends 20% headroom | Leave spare capacity above the stream’s bitrate; other traffic and a simultaneous backup stream also use bandwidth. |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). A static picture still has to be encoded and sent as video alongside the audio, so it does not remove the need for a suitable video bitrate or a stable upload connection. Choose a quality your connection can sustain and test the actual audio-and-image arrangement before the event. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube: Encoder settings for live streaming YouTube: Live streaming tips

Fix common problems
- No incoming preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is sending, check its connection status, and verify that the stream URL, key and protocol match the event selected in YouTube. Keep the key private while checking it.
- Image appears but there is no sound: Check that the correct audio file is selected, the source is not muted, its volume is up and the encoder audio meter moves during playback. Listen to the YouTube preview before going live.
- Stream is choppy or interrupted: Reduce the encoder’s bitrate or resolution to a level the upload connection can sustain. Check available upload capacity, leave the recommended bandwidth headroom and test the connection. A bitrate recommendation alone cannot guarantee a stable stream.
- The episode stops instead of repeating: Check the media source’s playback and loop/restart controls. Behavior depends on the encoder and its settings.
- The image or audio ends too soon: Check the source duration and playback behavior. If you need a complete copy of a broadcast longer than 12 hours, arrange a separate recording or backup rather than assuming YouTube will archive the whole stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded podcast to keep streaming on YouTube without leaving your computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Each slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
