How to Use Switchboard Live for a 24/7 YouTube Stream From Prerecorded Videos

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switchboard Live relays your stream; it does not play or store your prerecorded videos. To run a continuous YouTube broadcast, use a separate encoder that can play your videos, send its output to the ingest endpoint in your Switchboard workflow, and then take the YouTube destination live. YouTube’s archive and monetization rules still apply, even when the video is prerecorded.

How the setup works

Think of the encoder as the playout system and Switchboard as the distribution layer. Switchboard’s FAQ names OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as examples of encoders that support prerecorded playback. Your encoder must keep the video playing and transmit its output; Switchboard does not host the source file or create the video feed.

Component What it does
Encoder, such as OBS, Ecamm, or Switcher Studio Plays the prerecorded video and sends a live feed to Switchboard.
Switchboard Live Receives the feed, lets you check it in the confidence monitor, and routes it to the connected YouTube destination.
YouTube Publishes the live broadcast and may create an archive, subject to its archive limits.

Switchboard’s FAQ describes RTMP ingest. Its workflow documentation also presents RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT as selectable options. Use the endpoint and protocol shown in the workflow you configure; do not assume every account or encoder exposes the same choices.

Before you set up the stream

Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility

Check that the channel can live stream and does not have a live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube and Switchboard both warn that first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned start.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose and prepare the video playout

Use an encoder that can play the prerecorded material continuously and send the resulting feed to Switchboard. Prepare the playlist or loop in that encoder, not in Switchboard. Decide how you will handle transitions, the end of a file, and recovery if the playout stops; the cited Switchboard guidance does not prescribe encoder-specific playlist settings.

Check rights and the purpose of the broadcast

YouTube’s livestream terms require the person streaming to have the necessary rights for the content, including music rights, and to comply with applicable law and YouTube guidelines. For a documentary, check the rights for the footage, still images, score, archival audio, narration, and any other included material. A license to publish a video on demand does not necessarily establish permission to rebroadcast it continuously as a livestream.

Do not treat a continuous broadcast as a shortcut to monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. They require original and authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible, and reused material generally needs meaningful original commentary, substantial changes, or educational or entertainment value. Reviewers may assess the channel as a whole. YouTube clarified its repetitious-content policy and renamed it inauthentic content on July 15, 2025. Even if live-stream monetization is enabled, ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.

Set up the Switchboard-to-YouTube workflow

  1. Connect the correct YouTube channel. In the relevant Stream Group, choose Add Destinations, then Connect More. Select YouTube, authorize the account for the channel you intend to use, and enable that destination in the group. Confirm the channel identity before proceeding.
  2. Open the workflow’s ingest details. Copy the ingest URL and stream key displayed for the configured Switchboard workflow. Select the protocol shown there. The current workflow documentation describes RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT options; its FAQ also identifies RTMP ingest. Follow the options actually presented for your workflow and encoder.
  3. Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Paste the endpoint and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings, then configure its prerecorded playback. Keep the key private. If you reset it, replace the old key in the encoder before the next broadcast; a reset key will not match the previous configuration.
  4. Start the encoder’s playout and verify receipt. Start the video feed from the encoder. In Switchboard, check that the confidence monitor shows the expected picture and that the incoming status is active. The YouTube destination’s Go Live control is inactive until Switchboard detects incoming video.
  5. Start the YouTube destination. Once the feed is present, select the connected YouTube destination and choose Go Live. If you intend to use a Stream Group’s Auto-Start setting, configure it before sending video and test the complete behavior while you can monitor it. Do not rely on an untested automation setting for an unattended broadcast.
  6. Monitor the feed and protect the recording. Check that the encoder continues to play and Switchboard continues to receive video. Switchboard’s FAQ says it does not archive the video. If you need a local copy, arrange recording separately in your encoder or another recording workflow.

Video settings: use the active workflow, not a guessed profile

The Switchboard material describes ingest protocols and connection steps, but does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval for every encoder and workflow. Use the current requirements shown by YouTube and the encoder you have selected, and verify the actual incoming picture in Switchboard before taking the destination live. Do not assume that a setting recommended for one encoder, network, or workflow is a Switchboard-wide requirement.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single unbroken 24/7 broadcast therefore is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If preserving the programme matters, record a separate local copy or plan shorter broadcast sessions and verify the resulting archives. The choice between shorter sessions and one continuous stream affects replay preservation; it does not change the need to confirm rights or meet YouTube’s content policies.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Switchboard shows no incoming video: Confirm that the encoder is actively playing and transmitting, then check that its endpoint, stream key, and protocol match the values displayed in the current Switchboard workflow.
  • The destination’s Go Live control is unavailable: Switchboard enables it only after detecting the incoming feed. Start the encoder output and wait for the confidence monitor and receiving status to confirm video.
  • The encoder cannot connect using the chosen protocol: Compare the encoder’s available protocol options with those shown in the Switchboard workflow. Select a supported matching option rather than assuming RTMP, RTMPS, or SRT is available in every setup.
  • A stream key reset breaks the connection: Copy the replacement key into the encoder configuration. The old key will not send to the workflow after it has been reset.
  • The first broadcast cannot be started when planned: Check channel eligibility and whether live streaming has been enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step in advance.
  • The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a separate local recording or shorter sessions if a complete replay is important.
  • The stream is live but monetization is limited: Being live does not guarantee ads or monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s original, authentic, and reused-content rules for the channel and the specific programme.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your aim is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a Switchboard-based relay workflow, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. Because it runs in the cloud, your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
