Delhi magician Ishamuddin Khan’s story shows the gap between international recognition and a precarious livelihood at home—and the challenges facing performers whose skills are passed down through families and practiced in public spaces.
Who are the Madaris?
Madari is associated with public performance by traditional entertainers, including street magicians. Reporting describes skills handed down within families and developed through practice. Khan says he learned from his father and uncle; he told the Hindustan Times in 2014, “We perform art handed down to us through various generations.”
Madaris are part of a broader landscape of travelling performers and artists, not a synonym for all Indian magicians. The Indian Express’s 2019 account describes several routes in magic, from street performance to clubs and corporate events.
Why are street magicians less visible?
Accounts from Delhi point to a combination of pressures, not a single proven nationwide cause. The BBC’s 2026 profile follows Khan, whose version of the Great Indian Rope Trick brought international attention. Yet that recognition has not secured dependable work at home: the profile describes occasional private events and help from friends as part of how he gets by.

Earlier reporting offers a snapshot of the difficulties performers described in particular places and periods:
- Less access to public performance space: In a 2014 Delhi report, urban designer K T Ravindran said, “Our streets only cater to motor cars. We use spaces more for parking lots.” This is his account of the urban environment, not a measurement of performance space across India.
- Restrictions and changing audiences: The BBC’s 2026 profile and Indian Express’s 2019 reporting describe security or police restrictions and changing audience habits among the difficulties affecting performers. These reports do not establish how often restrictions occur nationwide or how much each factor contributes.
- Few dependable earning opportunities: The BBC describes Khan’s reliance on occasional private events and friends. A 2014 Hindustan Times story reported that performer Ramjeet Singh’s family earned Rs 50,000 over six months of marriage-procession performances. That is one family’s account from 2014, not a current income estimate or a typical rate.
Legal and administrative conditions should be read just as carefully. The 2019 Indian Express story discussed local discretion and older anti-beggary laws; the 2014 Hindustan Times article described circumstances in Delhi at that time. Neither establishes the present legal position across jurisdictions. The reporting cited here does not establish a current nationwide permit framework or support scheme.

What do the reported numbers tell us?
They offer context, not a census. The BBC notes there are no official figures and attributes an estimate of “about 400 Madari families in Delhi, with hundreds more in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana” to Khan’s account of community records. The Indian Express reported Khan’s figure of “150 families of street magicians” in Anand Parvat in 2019. These are estimates from different places and times, not directly comparable counts.
The same 2019 Indian Express report put the Delhi School of Magic’s reach at around 1,000 students since its launch in 1995. That number concerns students at one school, not the number of working Madaris or the size of the wider profession.

Is Indian magic itself disappearing?
Not on the evidence in these accounts. The pressures described concern street performers and the conditions that let them earn in public, rather than every form of Indian magic. P C Sorcar Junior told the Indian Express, “So we cannot say magic as an art is dying. It’s just undergoing a transformation.” His view fits the article’s account of performers pursuing stage, club and corporate work alongside other forms of performance.
These routes differ in what they offer. Street performance depends on access to public space and passersby; private or festival bookings replace a spontaneous audience with a hired engagement; ticketed stage work uses a venue and a paying audience. The reports provide examples of these paths, but no standardized earnings or audience data for comparing them.

What future does Khan imagine for the tradition?
In a 2026 Times of India profile, Khan describes a possible future that combines inherited performance with digital techniques. It is an aspiration, not evidence of an established revival program or a proven business model. He also describes the strain of trying to make a living from an art he fears is fading: “Many folk artists are living between applause and hunger.”
That tension is why Khan’s story matters beyond the rope trick. Public attention can preserve a performance in memory, but it does not by itself provide the space, audiences or regular work needed to sustain the people who practice it.
