Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To have OBS start your fireplace stream when OBS launches, add --startstreaming to the OBS launch command. To recover after a computer reboot, also configure Windows to launch OBS at startup. To recover from an OBS crash, you need a separate process supervisor; OBS’s automatic reconnect only retries a disconnected stream output while OBS is still running.
Know which failure you want to recover from
“Restart automatically” can mean several different things. These mechanisms cover different failures, so one setting is not enough for every situation.
| Mechanism | What it handles | What it does not handle |
|---|---|---|
--startstreaming |
Starts the stream when OBS launches. | Does not launch OBS or supervise a crashed process. |
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries a disconnected stream output while OBS is running. | Does not restart a crashed OBS process or launch OBS after a reboot. |
| Windows Startup or Task Scheduler | Can launch OBS when Windows starts, depending on the task setup. | Does not guarantee the network is ready or relaunch OBS after a later crash. |
| External process supervisor or script | Can monitor and relaunch OBS if configured to detect an exited process. | Requires separate OS-specific configuration; a universal recipe is not established here. |
Prepare and test the OBS stream first
- In OBS, select and save the profile and scene collection you intend to use. Confirm the fireplace scene is ready and that the YouTube streaming service and stream key are configured.
- Start the stream manually and confirm that the intended scene reaches YouTube. Resolve any source, key, or connection problems before automating startup.
- Stop the manual stream and close OBS before configuring unattended launch. This avoids mistaking a saved launch command for a tested recovery setup.
Start streaming when OBS launches
OBS documents --startstreaming as the launch parameter that starts streaming when the application opens. It is an argument to OBS, not a Windows startup trigger by itself. The official OBS launch parameters guide also documents options to select a collection, profile, and scene when needed.
Set the Windows launch command
- Find the OBS shortcut or scheduled task you will use to launch OBS.
- Add
--startstreamingto the executable’s command-line arguments. If the setup must select a specific collection, profile, or scene, use the documented--collection,--profile, or--sceneparameters as appropriate. - For a scheduled or otherwise automated launch, set the task’s “Start in” working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS’s launch guide calls out this requirement for automated launches. - Launch OBS with the configured shortcut or task and confirm that it opens the intended setup and starts the stream. Then check YouTube to verify the stream is actually live.
Do not copy a command from another computer without checking your OBS installation path and the profile, collection, or scene names on your own system.

Launch OBS after a Windows reboot
If the goal is to resume after a power failure, Windows update, or PC restart, configure Windows separately to launch the shortcut or task at startup. The --startstreaming argument tells OBS what to do after it launches; it does not create the startup trigger.
Windows Startup-folder and Task Scheduler approaches are commonly discussed for this purpose, but the exact setup depends on the Windows task, account, and session configuration. A March 2024 OBS forum discussion about a Windows 11 24/7 birdhouse-camera stream also raised a practical complication: the computer or OBS may start before the router or internet connection is ready. Treat that as an anecdotal failure mode, not a guarantee that a particular workaround will work.

Enable reconnect for stream disconnections
In OBS, configure automatic reconnect in the output settings for temporary disconnections. OBS’s API reference describes retry count and interval settings; the retry intervals double on each retry. This is a separate recovery layer from launching the application: it can retry a disconnected output only while OBS remains running.
Choose retry settings with your connection and use case in mind. A reconnect setting cannot fix a stopped computer, a crashed OBS process, an unavailable internet connection, or a platform-side interruption that persists beyond the configured attempts. See the OBS output API reference for the documented retry behavior.

Plan separately for crashes and power interruptions
OBS closes or crashes
A Windows startup task is not necessarily a crash watchdog: it may run only at startup. To relaunch OBS after it exits unexpectedly, use an external process supervisor or monitoring script configured for your Windows session. The appropriate method depends on whether OBS runs in an interactive user session or another context; no single cross-platform crash-recovery recipe is established here.
Power goes out
A startup trigger can help after power returns, but it cannot keep the PC running during an outage or ensure internet service is available. A UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may help bridge brief interruptions. It is optional hardware, not an OBS requirement, and it does not restart OBS or guarantee internet connectivity.

The network is not ready at startup
If OBS launches before the router or internet connection is available, the initial stream attempt may fail. A forum reply about the Windows 11 24/7 stream scenario suggests waiting for connectivity before starting or restarting OBS; that is community advice, not an officially verified OBS procedure. Check what happens on your own setup after a reboot before relying on unattended recovery.

Automation does not change the rights needed for fireplace footage, music, or other content in the stream. Use material you own or have permission to broadcast, and review the copyright safety checklist before leaving a stream unattended. Repeated or reused content can also raise channel monetization questions; a looping stream is not, by itself, proof that content complies with YouTube policies.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the fireplace stream uses uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
