How to Loop a Church Service Video on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To broadcast a church service video repeatedly on YouTube Live, loop it in a streaming encoder such as OBS—not with YouTube’s watch-page Loop control. For one video, add an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop; for a sequence of videos, use an OBS VLC Video Source and turn on Loop Playlist. Then send OBS’s output to YouTube through the Live Control Room.

Choose the right kind of loop

YouTube’s Loop control repeats playback for someone watching an uploaded video or playlist. It does not turn a video file into a live broadcast. To make a church service appear as a continuing live stream, an encoder must play the video repeatedly and send that output to YouTube.

On desktop, a viewer can right-click a YouTube player and select Loop. On Android, the viewer can use Settings → Additional settings → Loop video. These are viewing controls, not broadcast settings. YouTube’s instructions for looping videos and playlists describe those playback options.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer, plus the service video file or files stored locally.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream. A file looping in OBS does not protect the broadcast from an internet interruption.
  • Permission to stream the video, music, readings, and other material it contains. A church service recording may include copyrighted songs or other content; make sure the church has the rights or permissions needed for a live broadcast.

Loop one church service video in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the broadcast, or select the scene you intend to use.
  2. Add the file. In the Sources area, select + → Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name, choose the local video file, and confirm.
  3. Enable repetition. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS documents this setting as off by default. When enabled, playback restarts after the file ends. OBS lists support for formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  4. Check the scene at the end of playback. If you do not enable Loop, review the separate Show nothing when playback ends property so the scene behaves as intended when the file finishes.
  5. Check audio and framing. Play the source in OBS and confirm the video is visible, the audio is audible, and the scene fits the intended stream layout.

Loop a playlist of service videos

For several recordings that should play in order, use an OBS VLC Video Source rather than adding separate Media Sources and managing each one individually.

  1. Install VLC on the computer. OBS requires VLC to make its VLC Video Source available.
  2. In the OBS scene, select + in Sources → VLC Video Source.
  3. Add the service recordings to the source’s playlist in the order they should play.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties, then preview the sequence to verify the order and audio.

OBS documents VLC Video Source support on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its documented properties have Loop Playlist enabled by default, but verify the setting in your own source. See OBS Media Sources documentation.

Setup What repeats Additional requirement
Media Source One local video repeats when it reaches the end. No VLC requirement for this OBS source.
VLC Video Source The playlist repeats after its items play in order. VLC must be installed.
YouTube player Loop An uploaded video or playlist repeats for a viewer. Does not create an encoder broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or configure an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address that tell the encoder where to send the feed; keep it private and do not show it in screenshots or public instructions. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. In the Live Control Room, wait for and inspect the preview before sharing the public link or beginning the service.
  4. Check both audio and video in the preview, and confirm the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing, and monitoring stream quality. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Plan for long broadcasts

A looping source can keep playing, but it does not guarantee YouTube will archive every minute or preserve DVR for viewers. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If the archive matters, keep a local recording as a backup. Check YouTube’s current guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The service plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file source, check Loop Playlist instead.
  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the Sources add menu.
  • The YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm OBS is using the stream URL and key from the intended YouTube stream, and that the encoder has started. Treat the key as a credential; if it was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • The broadcast drops even though the video keeps looping in OBS: The loop only controls playback. Check the network connection and upload capacity, and allow headroom; YouTube notes that network disruption can break a stream.
  • There is no picture or sound: Verify the selected file and OBS source, then check the scene preview and audio levels before going live. YouTube recommends monitoring both stream audio and video.
  • The archive is missing or viewers cannot rewind as expected: For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not occur and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Maintain a local recording if you need a copy.
