How to Set Up a 24/7 Podcast Stream With OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a podcast as a YouTube Live stream with OBS, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into OBS, set a compatible video and audio output, then test the full path before going live. That configures the connection; it does not, by itself, make a home computer, power supply, or internet connection reliable enough for unattended 24/7 operation.

What you need before setting up OBS

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16; check your current channel status in YouTube Studio before scheduling. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay powered on and connected for the intended broadcast.
  • A stable internet connection with enough outbound upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
  • Your podcast audio and, if desired, visuals such as a static image, video, or scene. A microphone is useful for live narration, but a prerecorded-only stream does not need a host microphone.

Decide whether the program is live-hosted or prerecorded. For live hosting, add and test the microphone or other audio input. For prerecorded playback, add the media source or playback path you intend to loop and verify that OBS captures its audio. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes encoder hardware, including microphones and preamps, but the microphone is not a requirement for an audio program that is already recorded.

How do I connect OBS to YouTube Live?

  1. Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Exact labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
  2. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes keys as the encoder’s password and address: keep yours private, and do not put it in a screenshot, public document, or shared scene file.
  3. Enter the details in OBS. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Choose the applicable YouTube service if it is available and connect or enter the key as prompted. If you configure a custom server, enter the YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not substitute a watch-page URL for the encoder URL.
  4. Build the program. In the OBS Sources panel, add the audio and visual sources for the show. For prerecorded episodes, confirm the selected playback source is audible in the OBS mixer and that the picture or still image appears in the preview. For a live host, select the correct microphone input and speak at a normal level while watching the meter.
  5. Start the encoder and check the preview. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview and stream health information in Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s live controls to go live when ready. Confirm the public player and audio on a separate device if practical.

If a stream key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the replacement before broadcasting. See Manage live stream settings.

What bitrate and OBS settings should I use?

Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to send; there is no one bitrate that fits every podcast stream. YouTube’s standard encoder recommendations include RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The numbers below are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a given home connection can sustain the stream.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Protocol and video: choose RTMP/RTMPS as supported by the selected YouTube connection, with H.264 encoding.
  • Rate control: set CBR for the video encoder.
  • Keyframes: set the interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: select a format supported by your source, encoder, and upload connection, then match it to YouTube’s current bitrate guidance.
  • Audio: use AAC or MP3 and ensure the intended OBS audio source is active. For spoken-word programming, listen to a test rather than relying only on the mixer meter.

In OBS, the relevant controls are generally under Settings > Output for encoder and bitrate options, and Settings > Video for base/output resolution and frame rate. OBS labels and available encoder choices can differ by operating system and hardware. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the applicable bitrate table, and avoid copying a value intended for a different resolution or frame rate.

How much upload bandwidth does a 24/7 stream need?

YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. For example, a stream configured at a given total bitrate needs more upload capacity than that bitrate alone; other household or office traffic can consume the reserve. Measure outbound capacity in the place and at the time the stream will run, and test with the full planned setup. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  1. Check upload speed on the computer and network that will broadcast, not only on a different device or connection.
  2. Allow the recommended headroom above the stream’s total video and audio bitrate.
  3. Pause or account for other uploads, cloud backups, and network use that could compete with the broadcast.
  4. Run a representative test and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.

How to test the podcast stream before going live

  1. Start OBS streaming while the YouTube event is still in preview when that option is available.
  2. Check that the preview shows the intended scene and that speech or episode audio is present, clear, and synchronized well enough for the program.
  3. Test representative motion and audio—not just a still frame—at the planned resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  4. Review YouTube’s stream health and OBS status during the test. YouTube advises testing encoder setups, previewing, and monitoring quality; its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. Check what viewers will see and hear from another device or account, then use YouTube’s live controls when the stream is ready.

What does it take to keep OBS running unattended 24/7?

Connecting OBS successfully is only the encoder setup. Continuous operation also depends on the computer, power, network, playback loop, OBS behavior after a crash or restart, and a way to notice problems. YouTube’s general streaming advice encourages testing and monitoring, but its encoder instructions do not specify a guaranteed automatic restart or failover design for an unattended 24/7 OBS deployment. Do not treat a successful test as proof that the stream will recover from every outage.

  • Host computer: prevent sleep and planned shutdowns for the broadcast machine, and consider how the stream will be restarted after an operating-system update or crash.
  • Power: decide what happens during an outage and whether the computer, router, and modem can remain online long enough to recover.
  • Network: test the actual connection under expected conditions; an interruption can stop or disrupt the encoder feed.
  • Playback: verify that episodes advance or loop as intended, including what happens at the end of a file or playlist.
  • Monitoring and recovery: establish how you will detect a black screen, silent audio, disconnected encoder, or YouTube stream drop, and who can act on an alert.

Choose the operating approach around your priority. One continuous encoder session avoids repeatedly creating events, but requires an explicit interruption and recovery plan. Shorter scheduled sessions or a separately managed continuous-stream host can make episode boundaries and archives easier to manage, while adding operational steps or another service dependency. Compare restart behavior, archive handling, outage recovery, and current terms before committing; the basic OBS connection instructions do not establish which host or service is most reliable for your particular setup.

Archives, episode boundaries, and copyright

YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay. If a complete archive matters, plan separate, shorter sessions or make and retain separate recordings. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Only stream audio, video, music, and other material you have the rights to use on YouTube. A 24/7 loop does not change copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current platform rules and your own permissions before scheduling, especially for music, clips, guest recordings, and third-party material. You can use this copyright safety checklist to review common issues before broadcast.

Common OBS-to-YouTube problems and fixes

  • YouTube receives no signal: confirm OBS is streaming, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the event is using the encoder workflow. If you reset the key, replace the old one in OBS.
  • Preview appears but the stream is unstable: compare the configured total bitrate with measured upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check whether other devices are uploading.
  • Video looks poor or drops frames: verify the output resolution, frame rate, encoder load, and bitrate against YouTube’s current table and your connection. Reduce the output demand if the machine or network cannot sustain it.
  • Viewers cannot hear the episode: check that the playback source is routed to an active OBS audio channel, that it is not muted, and that the meter moves during playback; verify by listening to the preview or test stream.
  • Microphone is missing or too quiet: select the intended input in OBS audio settings, check the operating system’s device selection and mute state, then test at normal speaking distance.
  • The feed stops after an interruption: check whether OBS is still sending, whether the computer or connection recovered, and whether YouTube requires a new live-control action. Design and test a restart procedure instead of assuming OBS will recover unattended.
  • The replay is incomplete: check the session length; YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior covers encoder streams under 12 hours, so use planned shorter sessions or separate recordings when a complete archive is essential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded podcast loop rather than a live camera or host, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
