Choose OBS if you want a free, locally controlled setup and can keep your computer and internet connection running. Choose Gyre if you want a cloud-hosted loop that can continue while your computer is off, and are comfortable with a paid service and its plan limits. Both can stream prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Neither option guarantees more viewers, watch time, or revenue.
Gyre vs OBS: the practical difference
OBS plays and sends the video from your computer. For one file, its Media Source has a Loop option; for a playlist, OBS documents a VLC Video source with a Loop Playlist control. VLC must be installed to use that source. OBS Media Sources documentation
Gyre is a cloud-hosted service. Gyre says you upload files, arrange them in a playlist, and its servers transmit the stream, so the computer you used to set it up does not need to remain on. Its advertised features include cloud storage, playlists, and scheduling; storage, stream counts, resolution, and other limits depend on the current plan. Gyre’s 2026 guide · Gyre plans
YouTube lists both OBS as open-source streaming software and Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded-video streaming tool in its encoder guidance. A listing identifies the product category; it is not a guarantee that a particular channel or broadcast will be eligible for monetization or receive recommendations. | Question | OBS | Gyre |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the stream run? | On your computer through OBS media sources. | Gyre says its cloud servers transmit the stream. |
| How does looping work? | Loop one file with Media Source, or loop a playlist with VLC Video. | Use cloud playlists and continuous looping, subject to current service terms. |
| Must your computer stay on? | Yes. OBS must keep running and sending the stream. | According to Gyre, no; the service sends the stream from its servers. |
| Cost model | YouTube describes OBS as open-source software available at no charge. | Trial and paid subscription plans; check the current plan table for prices and limits. |
| Best fit | Hands-on local control when you can maintain the computer and connection. | Unattended cloud loops or multiple streams, within the selected plan’s limits. |
| Main trade-off | You are responsible for local uptime and network continuity. | Recurring cost, plan limits, and reliance on a third-party service. |
Set up a prerecorded YouTube Live loop with OBS
- Create a scene and add your video. In OBS, add a Media Source and point it to the local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. OBS Media Sources
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop to replay that file when it reaches the end.
- For multiple videos, use a playlist source. Add a VLC Video source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents loop and shuffle controls for this source; VLC must be installed for the source to be available.
- Create or open the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, use the live-stream workflow and select a streaming-software or encoder setup. Copy the stream key from the broadcast’s stream settings into OBS’s stream configuration, following YouTube’s current encoder instructions. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone you do not trust. YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube encoder workflow
- Start the stream and verify the handoff. Start streaming in OBS and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream status before relying on the broadcast. Keep OBS, the computer, and the internet connection running for the full duration.
Choose based on control, continuity, and cost
Choose OBS when local control matters most
OBS suits creators who want to manage the scene and media sources themselves, already have a suitable computer, and can keep that machine and its connection available. Its looping controls are built into the media-source workflow, and YouTube describes OBS as open-source software available at no charge. The trade-off is operational: if the computer sleeps, OBS closes, or the connection drops, the local encoder can no longer send the stream.
Choose Gyre when you need the computer off
Gyre suits a loop that should continue independently of your home computer. The service says its servers forward the stream; it also describes cloud storage, playlist tools, and scheduling. Before subscribing, compare the current plan’s storage, resolution, number of simultaneous streams, watermark status, schedule features, supported destinations, and price. These are changeable product terms, so verify them on Gyre’s plan page rather than relying on an old price or feature list.

Copyright, monetization, and channel checks
Use material you have permission to stream
Use only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. YouTube says third-party content can trigger a warning to stop a live stream; if the stream is archived, a Content ID claim may be made after it ends. A loop does not change the rights status of the material. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
Check channel-specific live and monetization settings
Monetization eligibility and settings depend on the channel. Gyre’s September 29, 2026 update says its YouTube API automation can create broadcasts and that monetization behavior can depend on the creator’s channel defaults. Treat that as vendor guidance and check your own live controls and monetization settings in YouTube Studio before starting. Gyre update, September 29, 2026

Troubleshoot common loop problems
- The video ends instead of repeating: For a single file, check that Loop is enabled in the Media Source properties. For a multi-file list, confirm you used VLC Video and enabled Loop Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS so it can detect the required VLC component.
- The YouTube preview never receives video: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube broadcast and that its stream configuration uses the matching stream key. If you regenerate the key in YouTube, update OBS with the new one.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS stream depends on the computer and network continuing to run. Prevent sleep and keep OBS open; if you need the broadcast to continue with your computer off, use a cloud-hosted workflow instead.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Check YouTube Studio for a live warning or copyright issue and resolve it there. Do not assume that restarting the encoder clears a rights issue.
- A cloud plan cannot run the setup you want: Recheck the provider’s current storage, resolution, stream-count, schedule, and destination limits before uploading or starting. Do not infer current capacity from an older plan description.
