YouTube lists a 70% creator share for both under applicable terms, but that does not show which will earn more for your channel—or guarantee either feature will be available throughout a continuous 24/7 stream.
What supporters are buying
| Comparison | Gifted membership | Super Chat |
|---|---|---|
| Supporter outcome | Temporary access for a recipient to channel membership perks. | A paid message highlighted in live chat. |
| How long it lasts | Up to one month. It is non-recurring for the recipient and expires afterward. | The message’s display prominence or pinning period varies with the purchase amount; it does not provide membership access. |
| Who benefits | A recipient who meets YouTube’s gift eligibility conditions. | The purchaser gets a visible, time-bound interaction in the live conversation. |
| Best fit by goal | Introducing viewers to ongoing channel perks. | Paid visibility and acknowledgment in chat. |
YouTube describes gifted memberships as an opportunity for others to access membership perks for one month. A Super Chat instead highlights a viewer’s message in live chat. Neither feature is inherently the better revenue choice: the available official material does not establish head-to-head earnings or conversion rates for 24/7 channels.
Who can receive gifts, and when can viewers send Supers?
Gifted memberships
Viewers must opt in to receive gifts, be subscribed to the channel, and have interacted with it recently. YouTube currently says existing channel members cannot receive gifted memberships. A gift is non-refundable; once YouTube gifts the first membership to a viewer, the purchase is considered fulfilled. The recipient’s membership is non-recurring and expires after up to one month. See YouTube’s gifted memberships help page for current recipient details.
Super Chat
Super Chat requires an eligible creator and stream or video, feature availability in the creator’s location, and live chat. Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, Made for Kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos, as well as when live chat or comments are turned off. Check the specific stream’s settings and your Studio Earn area rather than assuming the feature is enabled in every context. YouTube documents the restrictions in its Super Chat and Super Stickers eligibility, availability and policies.

Creator-level requirements
Fan funding is part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Baseline requirements include being at least 18, living where the particular feature is available, accepting applicable terms or modules, and enabling the feature in Studio; requirements can differ by feature. Availability is therefore a combination of the creator’s eligibility and the individual live’s conditions. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes gifted memberships on horizontal streams and vertical live feeds, subject to eligibility.
How YouTube calculates the creator share
| Feature | Stated creator share | Calculation details and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Memberships, including gifts | 70% of membership revenue | After applicable taxes and fees. Some MCNs may take an additional share. |
| Supers, including Super Chat | 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google | After local sales tax and iOS App Store fees. YouTube says it currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. |
YouTube Help states these 70% shares under their respective terms; the pages were accessed in 2026 and do not state when the rates began. The figures are not equivalent to guaranteed earnings or net profit. Supporter count, purchase behavior, deductions, and any MCN agreement affect what a creator ultimately receives. The deductions are described differently for the two categories, so the shared percentage alone is not a like-for-like yield comparison. See the official pages on membership revenue and Supers revenue.

Which one should a 24/7 channel emphasize?
- Choose gifting when the aim is to introduce people to membership perks. A gift gives an eligible recipient temporary access, potentially letting them experience the channel’s member offering.
- Choose Super Chat when the aim is an emphasized message. It suits viewers who want their message surfaced in the live conversation, with display duration depending on purchase amount.
- Do not treat either as a guaranteed income stream. The official guidance does not publish comparative earnings or performance figures for 24/7 channels.
For a documentary channel, membership perks might include whatever benefits the channel itself offers, while Super Chat is useful when there is an active chat in which messages can be acknowledged. That is a match between the feature and the channel’s purpose, not a promise about audience response. A pre-recorded loop may have different chat activity from a presenter-led live; the available feature documentation does not quantify that difference.
What changes on a 24/7 stream?
YouTube’s help material covers live-stream eligibility and formats, but it does not establish a special uninterrupted-duration guarantee or a specific maximum duration for a 24/7 broadcast. It also does not say either fan-funding feature will remain continuously available on every such stream. Confirm YPP and feature eligibility in Studio, then inspect the settings of the actual live, including whether live chat is enabled. Do not infer an indefinite-stream guarantee from the fact that memberships are supported on horizontal and vertical live formats.

How to compare results in YouTube Analytics
- Open the channel’s YouTube Studio analytics and review the Memberships report. Filter by “Memberships Type” to distinguish gifted and redeemed memberships.
- Review Super Chat revenue in the Revenue report under “How you make money.” Compare periods with similar stream schedules and content where possible.
- Interpret the totals in context: different audience sizes, stream durations, chat activity, and eligibility conditions can affect them. Analytics can show what happened on your channel, but the official documentation does not establish that one feature will outperform the other on a 24/7 stream.
YouTube documents these report options in its channel memberships analytics guidance and Supers and monetization guidance.
