To send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Azure VM in India, run an encoder on the VM, then configure it with the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The encoder sends the file as a live feed; this is not the same as uploading a video through YouTube’s normal upload workflow. Before scheduling an event, verify the channel’s live-stream eligibility, the VM’s outbound route and actual upload capacity, and the encoder’s output settings.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance describes these eligibility requirements.
- An Azure VM with the video file, compatible encoder software, and a working route to the public internet.
- A YouTube Live stream or scheduled event, with its server URL and stream key available from Live Control Room.
- Enough stable outbound bandwidth for the selected video bitrate, plus headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% extra upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate.
The cited YouTube and Microsoft guidance does not establish a particular Azure VM size, operating system, encoder build, file format, or India-to-YouTube latency. Select and test those details with your actual file and VM rather than treating Azure’s published expected bandwidth as a guaranteed end-to-end speed.
1. Confirm the channel can go live
In YouTube Studio, check that the channel is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s stated requirement includes no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Resolve any eligibility issue before spending time configuring the VM or scheduling a broadcast.
2. Create the event and get the ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or schedule the event in Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the displayed server URL and stream key into a protected place for configuration on the VM. The URL is the encoder’s server address; the key identifies the stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not commit it to a public script or repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Use the server URL displayed for this stream rather than assuming an address from another event or encoder setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder supports it; select the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room.

3. Prepare the Azure VM and encoder
Check the VM’s outbound internet path
Do not assume that a VM can reach YouTube’s public ingest endpoint simply because it is attached to a virtual network. Confirm the VM has a valid outbound method and that its routing and security rules permit the encoder’s traffic. Microsoft Learn’s “Default outbound access in Azure” guidance says virtual networks created using API releases after March 31, 2026 default to private subnets, which require an explicit outbound method for public internet endpoints. The documented options include a NAT Gateway, a standard load balancer outbound rule, a VM public IP, or a firewall/NVA route. That default change does not alter existing VNets; inspect the actual VM and VNet configuration.
Choose an encoder workflow that can read the file
Install encoder software on the VM that can read your particular prerecorded file and transmit it as a live feed. FFmpeg is one possible software implementation, but the available guidance does not establish a tested command, package version, operating system, container or codec compatibility, or repeat/loop behavior. Verify those details on the actual VM with the actual file before relying on them for an event. If you need the broadcast to continue after an SSH session disconnects, run the encoder under a persistent process supervisor or another suitable service-management method for your operating system.

Set the encoder output
Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Prefer RTMPS when available. For ordinary SDR output, YouTube documents H.264, H.265, and AV1 video ingestion; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the selected settings to the file, encoder capability, and stable bandwidth available from the VM.

These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of an Azure VM or an India-to-YouTube connection. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use YouTube’s complete encoder-settings table for the chosen output rather than extrapolating from these examples.

4. Check whether the VM can sustain the stream
- Look up the expected network bandwidth for the VM size in Microsoft Learn’s “Virtual machine network bandwidth” guidance. Treat that figure as Azure’s expected VM/network throughput, not a guaranteed internet speed to YouTube.
- Confirm the VM’s outbound method, route, and applicable security rules as described above.
- Measure the outbound path from the actual VM under conditions resembling the planned event. External internet conditions can affect performance, and published Azure bandwidth alone does not establish the available rate to YouTube.
- Choose an encoder bitrate below the stable measured throughput, preserving YouTube’s recommended approximately 20% upload headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again.
The reviewed guidance does not establish that an Azure VM in India has a particular latency advantage to YouTube’s ingest edge. Choose the VM based on measured performance and operational needs, not an assumed regional advantage.
5. Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder on the VM and wait for its incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the preview has the expected picture and sound. Test movement and audio conditions similar to the actual video, and check the stream-health messages.
- For a scheduled event, use the Live Control Room’s Go live action when you are ready to make it live.
- During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream health along with the VM’s CPU and network behavior. If the stream falters, use the health messages and VM measurements to distinguish an encoder or resource problem from an outbound connectivity problem.
Test before the scheduled event, not only at its start. YouTube recommends checking audio and video quality and monitoring the stream; a preview is also the practical point to catch a wrong key, URL, or output configuration before viewers depend on the feed.

6. End the event and verify its archive
End the event in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder from sending. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Afterward, check the resulting archive and watch page. Do not assume that a longer stream will be archived under the same rule.

Choose based on encoder compatibility, latency needs, picture quality, stable VM egress, and cost. These sources do not quantify the relative performance of RTMPS and HLS for a specific Azure region or VM.

Troubleshooting common failures

Costs and operational trade-offs
An Azure VM workflow requires you to account for the VM and its network configuration, encoder operation, and any applicable storage or data-transfer charges under your Azure arrangement. The reviewed sources do not establish a VM size or a price for this specific workload. Estimate from your own Azure region, VM, runtime, and network setup; then test the complete path. Running the encoder yourself offers direct control over its configuration, but you are responsible for keeping the process and VM available.
