Best Way to Loop Multiple MP4 Files on a 24/7 YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fixed sequence of local MP4 files, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add the files in order, enable Loop Playlist, and leave shuffle off. OBS sends the resulting feed to YouTube Live. This is a practical do-it-yourself setup, but the computer, files, power, internet connection, and OBS process must remain available for the stream to continue.

Choose the right playback method

  • Several videos in sequence: Use OBS’s VLC Video source, which supports a playlist and a Loop Playlist option.
  • One video repeated: OBS’s Media Source is designed for a single file and has its own Loop control.

VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. Match the installation to OBS: OBS says users of 64-bit OBS should install 64-bit VLC. The local method gives you control over scenes and overlays, but the computer and network are part of the streaming chain.

Set up a continuous playlist in OBS

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming. If the channel has not streamed live before, activate the feature in YouTube Studio. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private; it connects an encoder to your stream.
  3. Install VLC and open OBS. Install the VLC version that matches your OBS bitness, then launch OBS Studio.
  4. Create a scene and add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Add the MP4 files in the order you want them played. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence.
  5. Configure OBS to send to YouTube. Open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if that option is available, or enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not share or publish the key.
  6. Set output and audio. Choose settings based on the files’ resolution and frame rate, plus the upload speed your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in its current table rather than copying a number from another format. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain a stream.
  7. Test before relying on the stream. Start streaming from OBS, then check the YouTube preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm that the picture and sound are present. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement and checking connection speed.
  8. Observe transitions and a full cycle. Watch the playlist advance through each file and complete one full pass. Check for unexpected gaps, black frames, missing audio, or playback problems before leaving it unattended.

For bitrate, keyframe, and codec details, see YouTube’s encoder settings. For connection and stream-key setup, see YouTube’s encoder setup documentation. OBS documents its playlist and loop controls in Media Sources.

Make the playlist reliable in practice

  • Check mixed files: Different codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, or audio layouts can behave differently at transitions. Test every file in the actual playlist rather than assuming that one successful clip proves them all.
  • Keep source files available: The local computer must be able to read the media throughout playback. Avoid moving or renaming files after setting up the playlist unless you update and retest the source.
  • Plan for local failures: Power loss, a dropped home connection, an OBS crash, or a computer restart can interrupt this setup. Keep backups of the media and check stream health after playlist changes.
  • Do not assume seamless looping with other tools: FFmpeg on a server is an option for people comfortable with command-line setup and server maintenance, but stream-copy looping can encounter timestamp issues at loop boundaries. Verify the actual output rather than assuming every file will loop seamlessly.

Rights, archives, and monetization

Use media you have permission to broadcast

Only stream video and audio that you own or have permission to broadcast. A license’s scope depends on its terms; the playlist setup itself does not establish permission. For a pre-stream review, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Do not count on one full-day YouTube archive

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a complete replay. If a complete VOD matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and plan separate recording or shorter segments. See YouTube’s encoder setup documentation.

A loop does not guarantee monetization

YouTube says monetized livestreams can use ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Repeating a video does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s monetization policies before building a channel plan around reused or repetitive material.

Ways to keep a YouTube livestream running

Approach Best fit Operational trade-off
StreamNeo cloud service People who want uploaded videos to keep playing without leaving a home computer on. Requires an upload and a paid service after the free first day; check the provider’s current terms for your needs.
OBS with VLC playlist on a local computer Operators who want local control, scenes, overlays, or direct supervision. The computer, source files, power, network, and encoder process all need to stay available.
FFmpeg on a server Operators comfortable with command-line configuration and server maintenance. You handle restart behavior, monitoring, and troubleshooting; loop-boundary timestamps need verification.
Another managed cloud encoder Operators who want playback hosted away from their home computer. Service cost, upload workflow, provider limits, and current plan details need checking directly. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video, but the directory is not an independent reliability comparison.

Compare options by local hardware and network dependency, setup and monitoring effort, playlist editing, codec conversion needs, service cost, and control over scenes or overlays. No method should be treated as a promise of uninterrupted uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos, not a camera livestream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then restart OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  • The stream will not connect: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the event is ready in Live Control Room, and OBS has the correct server URL and stream key. Check that the key has not been changed or copied incorrectly.
  • YouTube preview is black or silent: Check that the VLC playlist contains valid files, the intended OBS scene is active, and the source is visible and unmuted. Test the affected file locally, then inspect it in the OBS preview before restarting the live feed.
  • The stream buffers or health degrades: Compare the chosen output bitrate with sustainable upload speed and YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then retest in Live Control Room.
  • Playback fails at a transition or loop boundary: Test each file and the full cycle. Mixed formats may expose problems that a single-file test misses. With FFmpeg stream-copy looping, specifically verify timestamps at the boundary.
  • The stream stops when you leave: OBS on a home computer depends on that computer, power, network, and running encoder. If that dependency is the problem, use a cloud workflow rather than assuming a local setup will continue unattended.
