Choose the setting that matches your goal

These are YouTube’s documented live-stream options, not a loop-specific control. See YouTube’s live-stream ad settings for its current guidance.
Set a looping stream to Manual and leave breaks uninserted
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled or active stream.
- Open the stream’s edit and monetization settings.
- Choose Manual for mid-roll ads.
- Do not insert mid-roll breaks. If you want occasional ads, insert them only at pauses you have deliberately chosen.
YouTube’s instruction is direct: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.” The documented controls apply to live streams generally; YouTube does not specify whether a stream continuously replaying prerecorded material treats loop boundaries differently.
When to use Delay ads instead
If you keep automatic mid-rolls enabled but want to protect a particular moment from an automatic break, use Delay ads in the Live Control Room. YouTube says this delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. It does not suppress a break you insert manually: manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is on.

Delay ads is therefore a temporary timing measure, not a substitute for Manual mode when your aim is to avoid creator-inserted mid-rolls altogether. YouTube does not say that the control changes how ads behave at the end of a loop.
What these settings do—and do not—turn off
The Manual setting described above governs mid-rolls; it is not an ad-free switch. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is on for a live stream. The platform separately says ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with autoplay, but that is a narrow embedding condition—not a general setting for viewers watching on YouTube.

YouTube also notes that not every viewer is guaranteed to receive a mid-roll. A viewer who is not served one continues watching; a viewer who receives one returns to the stream after the ad ends or is skipped. This means the experience can differ among viewers even when they are watching the same stream. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream ads for viewers.
Trade-offs for a channel that runs continuously
Manual mode gives you control over whether to insert mid-rolls, but it requires you to decide and act while live if you want to place any. Scheduled mode offers set intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. Automatic mode delegates timing to YouTube, which says it aims for natural breakpoints; the platform also says manual or scheduled settings may have lower earnings potential than automatic mid-rolls. That is YouTube’s stated trade-off, not a prediction of a particular channel’s revenue.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn them on. YouTube describes the comparison across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a platform-reported average, not a promise for an individual channel or evidence about looping prerecorded streams.
Monetization and optional ad controls

YouTube also identifies Elgato Stream Deck, through its YouTube plugin, as an option for inserting ads. That may help a creator trigger a manual break at a chosen time; it does not stop ads or guarantee that an ad will be served. The separate YouTube guidance about mid-rolls in eligible videos describes an eight-minute length threshold for videos, but that rule is not an answer about live-stream looping; use the live-stream controls above for this situation. - Mid-rolls still appear after you changed settings: Confirm the stream is set to Manual and that you have not inserted breaks. Manual breaks still display even when Delay ads is on.
- Viewers report different ad timing: YouTube says viewers may see automatic mid-rolls at different times, and not every viewer is guaranteed to receive one. The ad experience is not necessarily identical for everyone.
- You expected no ads at all: Manual mode addresses mid-rolls, not pre-roll or display ads. YouTube says those are automatically turned on when monetization is on for a live stream.
- You want to avoid a break during a particular segment but keep automatic ads: Turn on Delay ads before that moment, allowing for its 10-minute delay. It does not block manually inserted mid-rolls.
- You want to know whether a break will occur at each loop boundary: YouTube’s published live-stream ad guidance does not specify loop-boundary behavior, so do not assume a boundary triggers—or prevents—a mid-roll.
