Run tmux on the VPS, start your encoder inside a named tmux session, then detach with Ctrl+b, followed by d. The tmux session—and, ordinarily, the encoder process inside it—continues after you close SSH. Later, connect to the same VPS as the same user and reattach. This protects against a dropped terminal connection; it does not restart a crashed encoder, keep a rebooted VPS alive, or repair a failed connection to YouTube.
Start the stream inside tmux on the VPS

SSH into the VPS that will run the encoder. Start tmux in that remote shell—not in a tmux session on your own computer:
tmux new-session -A -s ytstreamThis creates a session named
ytstream, or attaches to it if it already exists for that tmux server and user. -
Run your YouTube encoder command in the tmux session. The right command depends on your source media, encoder, VPS environment, and YouTube ingest settings, so there is no single safe command for every stream. Confirm the command works and check its output before detaching.

Detach without stopping the encoder: press Ctrl+b, release both keys, then press d. This exits the tmux client and leaves the session’s programs running in the background. Do not type
exitin the pane: that closes its shell and may stop the encoder running there.
The tmux project’s Getting Started documentation explains that detaching leaves the session and its programs running in the background. The key distinction is that tmux is running on the same VPS as the encoder, so the remote process is managed independently of the SSH terminal client.

Reconnect and reattach

SSH back into the same VPS using the same user account.

List the tmux sessions available to that user:
tmux list-sessions -
Reattach to the named session:
tmux attach-session -t ytstream -
Inspect the encoder’s output, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health. Seeing an active tmux session confirms that the terminal session is accessible; it does not confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

If tmux says the session does not exist, first verify that you connected to the original host and account. Sessions belong to a particular tmux server and socket; a different user, host, or socket can make the original session appear absent.
What tmux does—and does not—keep running
tmux handles an ordinary disconnect between your terminal client and the VPS. It is not a process supervisor or a guarantee of continuous streaming. The encoder can still stop if it crashes, the VPS reboots or shuts down, the tmux server exits, or the network path to YouTube fails. For recovery from those events, use suitable service supervision and recovery procedures in addition to tmux.

- SSH disconnect: the tmux-managed session ordinarily remains available; reconnect and reattach.
- Encoder failure: the process has stopped, even if the tmux session remains; inspect the output and restart or investigate the encoder.
- VPS restart or shutdown: the tmux server and session do not survive as running processes; start the session and encoder again after the host is available.
- Network or YouTube ingest problem: tmux may show a running encoder, but the stream can still be interrupted. Check encoder output and YouTube stream health separately.
Check YouTube encoder settings before going live
YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations cover RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s table lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p at 30 fps as 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS or network route can sustain a feed. Use the current table for your chosen settings rather than treating either example as a universal target.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, watching stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. Its network guidance recommends keeping about 20% additional upload bandwidth available. A network disruption can interrupt delivery even while tmux and the encoder are still running.

For a first live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. The encoder setup flow uses the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions to get the current values for your stream.
Treat the stream key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs you share. YouTube says keys can be reused with a custom key; if yours is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
Troubleshoot a missing session or a stream that stopped
