The file itself is not the live event: the encoder turns playback into a continuous live feed. YouTube and Google Cloud document the event, encoding, network, and billing pieces, but not a tested end-to-end VM recipe for this exact workflow, so test your implementation before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live: it must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete it ahead of your event. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and its live-streaming restrictions.
- A prerecorded video file accessible to a Compute Engine VM, either on its disk or retrieved from storage before playback.
- A VM with enough resources to encode the video at your intended resolution and frame rate, plus outbound network access to YouTube.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A way to run and monitor an encoder process on the VM. The exact command and service setup depend on your media format and implementation; the official sources do not provide a validated command for this specific workflow.
This method is for sending an uploaded recording as a live feed. It does not use a camera or make an ordinary video upload appear live.
1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create an encoder stream or schedule an event. Set its visibility and event options. Scheduling creates a viewer-facing event page that you can share in advance.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Use the event’s actual ingestion details rather than assuming a hostname or constructing an endpoint yourself.
- Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel; do not expose it in public scripts, logs, repositories, or screenshots.
YouTube’s encoder livestreaming instructions cover the Live Control Room workflow. YouTube says to allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement.
2. Set up the Compute Engine VM and video source
Choose the host and make the file available
Create a Compute Engine VM sized for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and number of simultaneous feeds you intend to send. Put the media file on an accessible disk or retrieve it from storage before the scheduled playback. The VM will read that file and run the encoder; YouTube receives the resulting live feed, not the source file as a normal upload.

The sources do not prescribe a machine type, operating-system setup, storage layout, startup service, or tested FFmpeg loop command for this use. Treat those choices as implementation work: check that your encoder supports the file’s video and audio formats, can sustain the intended output, and behaves correctly when the file ends. Run a test event before scheduling a real broadcast.
Check network access without opening unnecessary ports
The sender needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingestion service. Google Cloud’s default VPC rules generally block inbound traffic and allow outbound traffic, but your project’s actual VPC and hierarchical firewall policies may differ. Inspect them rather than assuming the defaults. Do not open inbound ports unless you have a separate management or source-ingest need.

Google Cloud accounts bandwidth per VM; maximum egress depends on machine type and destination, and an advertised maximum is not a guaranteed throughput rate. Leave capacity for bitrate overhead and network variation. YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. If you send a primary and backup feed at once, include both in the capacity calculation. See Google Cloud’s VM network-bandwidth guidance and YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
3. Configure the encoder and YouTube ingest
Use RTMPS for the typical workflow
For a conventional encoder setup, use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room and enter the stream key in the encoder’s supported format. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies the rtmps protocol and port 443; the endpoint, path, and TLS handling must all match the supplied ingest details. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. See its encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.

YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion. Its HLS guide describes segmented uploads as suitable for premium, high-quality or high-resolution delivery at relatively higher latency, while DASH involves segment and manifest handling. These options add protocol-specific implementation requirements; there is no universal performance ranking for a particular network and file. For most standard encoder workflows, keep the setup centered on the RTMPS endpoint provided for the event. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol documentation.
Match output settings to the source and event
Use YouTube’s published encoder recommendations as a starting point. They include H.264 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the output to the source and event requirements, and confirm the actual result in a test event. These are YouTube recommendations, not a requirement to recompress every source: compatible video may be sent without recompression if the encoder and ingestion setup support it.

There is no validated FFmpeg command here to copy and paste. Encoder syntax, real-time pacing, looping behavior, audio mapping, and file compatibility vary. Build those settings for your chosen encoder and verify that playback advances at the intended speed, audio is present, and the output reaches YouTube’s preview before using it for a public event.
Manual setup versus API automation
Live Control Room is the simpler route when you are creating and managing an event manually. If you automate event creation, YouTube’s Live Streaming API separates the feed from the viewer-facing broadcast: a liveStream resource describes ingestion, while a liveBroadcast resource represents the event. The API can return ingestion metadata such as primary and backup addresses, stream name, resolution, frame rate, and stream status. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. Automation gives you lifecycle control, but requires managing and associating those resources correctly.

4. Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- For a scheduled stream, finish setup at least two hours before the event where practical. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Start the encoder on the VM and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for picture, sound, correct playback speed, and stream health. Confirm that the event page is reachable and that visibility is set as intended.
- When the preview is correct and it is time to begin, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control if the event is not configured to start automatically.
- Monitor audio and video throughout the broadcast. If you configured a backup encoder, test failover before the event rather than assuming it works.
- At the end, stop the encoder and end the event according to its auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
These timings and operational recommendations come from YouTube’s encoder livestreaming instructions and livestreaming tips.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for recorded material
A recording being prerecorded does not exempt it from YouTube’s live-stream rules. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights needed for every included element—especially music, footage, and other third-party material—and review the current YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content. YouTube can impose live-stream restrictions, which affect eligibility. For a channel-level check, review the status in YouTube Studio and the live-stream restriction guidance linked above. A technical preview confirms delivery, not ownership rights or policy compliance.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not connected to the event’s ingestion endpoint, or the stream key or URL is wrong. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from the correct event, verify the encoder uses the rtmps scheme and required port 443, then restart the sender. |
| The VM cannot reach YouTube | Outbound traffic is blocked by the project’s actual network or firewall policy, or the route is unavailable. | Inspect the VM’s VPC and hierarchical firewall rules and confirm outbound connectivity. Avoid adding inbound rules unless another requirement calls for them. |
| Connection is unstable or stream health degrades | The available egress throughput is insufficient or variable relative to the feed bitrate. | Check the VM’s applicable bandwidth limits and destination, reduce output bitrate if appropriate, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Count simultaneous backup feeds too. |
| Video plays but audio is missing or incorrect | The source audio track is absent, mapped incorrectly, or encoded in an incompatible configuration. | Inspect the source and encoder’s audio mapping and settings; validate AAC or MP3 audio in a test event. |
| Playback is choppy, too fast, or stops at the file’s end | The encoder’s pacing or end-of-file behavior does not match the intended live playback. | Test the selected encoder’s real-time input and looping behavior with the actual file. The official sources do not establish a specific command or loop configuration for this workflow. |
| The event cannot be started from the channel | The channel may not be verified, may have a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, or first-time enablement may still be pending. | Check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
Google Cloud cost considerations
Google Cloud’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to specific Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. That is a narrow network-transfer pricing statement, not a total-cost estimate. VM runtime, boot disk and media storage, address choices, taxes, and other services can affect the bill. Check the pricing calculator and current terms for your project’s region and configuration before estimating the full event cost. See Google Cloud VPC network pricing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube without managing a VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The DIY Google Cloud route gives you control over the VM and encoder; StreamNeo is the simpler option when you want the service to handle continuous playout.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the upload streamed as made and no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, recovery, and StreamNeo team support; the same product is included on every plan, with only the billing length changing. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start with the free StreamNeo day.
