How to Make an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Recover From Network Errors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg’s -reconnect options do not provide a general retry mechanism for a stream it is publishing to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Those options are documented for HTTP connections, chiefly useful when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP input. To recover from publishing failures, first identify which connection failed; then use process supervision if FFmpeg exits, or a rehearsed backup encoder when the stream needs an operational failover plan.

First identify which connection failed

A live FFmpeg workflow can fail at different points. The right recovery depends on which one:

  • HTTP input failure: FFmpeg is reading a source such as an HTTP URL. The HTTP protocol’s reconnect options may apply to that input.
  • Publishing failure: FFmpeg is sending its output to YouTube using RTMP or RTMPS. The HTTP reconnect options are not a documented general retry switch for this output.
  • Process failure: FFmpeg exits. A service manager or wrapper can restart the process, but that does not guarantee a seamless YouTube stream.
  • Encoder or network-path failure: The publishing connection is interrupted while the event is live. For higher-availability production, YouTube recommends preparing and testing a backup encoder.

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect behavior for HTTP, including network errors, EOF, and certain HTTP response codes. Treat an HTTP input and an RTMP(S) output as separate connections using different protocols.

Check the YouTube destination and encoder settings

  1. Copy the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the event, then enter them in your encoder. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish a real key in a command, support post, or log. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  2. Use settings supported by the current YouTube ingest requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR video bitrate encoding. The current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 ingest and up to 60 fps. Use its codec- and resolution-specific bitrate table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
  3. Set the keyframe interval deliberately. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Check that your encoder’s setting matches the chosen frame rate and output configuration.
  4. Test the complete path before the event. Run the actual input, encoding, and output configuration in an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream. Check preview, stream health messages, audio, motion, and the receiving player; a process starting successfully does not establish that the whole stream is healthy. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

If YouTube reports a key-related encoder start error, follow its stream key recovery guidance: obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Use FFmpeg HTTP reconnect flags only for HTTP inputs

Options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error belong to FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options. They can help with eligible HTTP input connections; they do not turn an RTMP(S) publishing destination into a retrying output. Placing them before an RTMP(S) output URL and describing them as YouTube output recovery is not supported by the documented scope of those options.

For a live or endless HTTP input, FFmpeg’s documentation says of reconnect_at_eof: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” This statement concerns HTTP input behavior, not YouTube RTMP(S) output. The available options and defaults can vary by FFmpeg version and build; inspect your installation with ffmpeg -h protocol=http and consult the current FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits

If FFmpeg terminates after an output failure, a process supervisor can detect the exit and launch it again. This is process recovery, not a native FFmpeg RTMP retry option. A restart can cause a visible interruption, and the reviewed guidance does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve the event or resume every stream seamlessly.

  • Configure a bounded or increasing delay between attempts so a repeated fault does not create a rapid restart loop.
  • Keep useful logs and alert or stop after repeated failures rather than restarting indefinitely.
  • Make the supervisor report FFmpeg’s actual exit status; avoid hiding configuration errors behind automatic restarts.
  • Protect the stream key in configuration and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  • Rehearse the exact command and restart behavior with the same source, codecs, and YouTube ingest settings before relying on it live.

A supervisor cannot restore frames that were not sent, prove continuity, or confirm that the YouTube player is receiving a healthy feed. Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing player after a restart.

For production continuity, rehearse a backup encoder

A backup encoder is a separate resilience layer from restarting the same FFmpeg process. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.

  1. Prepare the backup encoder and configure it for the event’s YouTube ingest setup.
  2. Test the switchover before the event by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
  3. Confirm the player actually rolls over; do not infer failover from the backup encoder merely being configured.
  4. During rehearsal, inspect the preview, viewer access, audio and video quality, and the integrity and growth of any local archive.

Failover should be tested with the same stream configuration you intend to use. It is not a promise of uninterrupted playback; the viewer may still see a transition.

Consider HLS only when its trade-offs fit

YouTube supports HLS ingest for compatible encoders, with an HLS-specific URL and settings, including a backup server URL. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, so YouTube notes that it has greater latency than RTMP. It is an alternative ingest path, not a universal retry switch. Verify encoder support and use the HLS-specific stream details and requirements in YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance before changing a working RTMP(S) workflow.

Troubleshoot a stream that still will not recover

Symptom Likely check Action
FFmpeg keeps retrying an HTTP source but YouTube output still drops The reconnect flags apply to the HTTP input, not the RTMP(S) output. Separate the source-input issue from the publishing issue. Check the YouTube destination and use process supervision or a tested backup encoder for the applicable failure layer.
FFmpeg exits and does not return No supervisor is configured, or the restart policy stops after an attempt. Configure a controlled restart policy, preserve logs, and rehearse the exact failure and recovery path.
YouTube rejects the encoder connection The stream URL or key may be wrong, stale, or mismatched to the event. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If YouTube reports a key-related error, obtain a new key there and update the encoder.
The connection starts but stream health is poor Protocol, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or available upstream capacity may not fit the current ingest requirements. Check YouTube’s current encoder table, use representative motion and audio in a test, and monitor stream health rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s startup message.
A backup encoder is ready but viewers do not switch Failover has not been verified in the player. Run YouTube’s suggested rehearsal by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player rolls over.
HLS has more delay than the existing workflow HLS uses segments and has greater latency than RTMP, according to YouTube. Decide whether the latency is acceptable and verify HLS-specific encoder compatibility and settings before switching ingest paths.
