Can a Raspberry Pi Stream 1080p Video to YouTube 24/7?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, a Raspberry Pi can stream 1080p video to YouTube, but a particular Pi setup is not automatically proven reliable for continuous 24/7 broadcasting. Raspberry Pi’s published figures show that Pi 5 can software-encode 1080p30 in a specified test, while models before Pi 5 have hardware H.264 encoding. A sustained broadcast still depends on your source, software, power, cooling, and internet connection. Test the complete setup before relying on it around the clock.

What “1080p 24/7” requires

Streaming resolution is only one part of the job. The Pi must encode video and audio in a format YouTube accepts, send it continuously over a stable upload connection, and keep doing so through normal operating conditions. YouTube recommends testing with motion and audio similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health, rather than treating a speed test or a brief successful broadcast as proof of long-term stability.

The practical starting point is 1080p30: Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 5 result is specifically for real-time 1080p30 encoding in its described low-latency test. Higher frame rates, overlays, conversion from a capture source, or other work running at the same time can change the load.

Which Raspberry Pi can encode the stream?

Model generation Encoding path What the evidence supports
Before Raspberry Pi 5 Hardware H.264 encoder included in the VideoCore GPU, according to Raspberry Pi. Hardware encoding is available, but the exact model, capture path, software, and workload still determine whether a complete setup is suitable.
Raspberry Pi 5 Software H.264 encoding; Pi 5 does not have the earlier hardware encoder. Raspberry Pi’s 2026 low-latency encoding note reports real-time 1080p30 in its described test, with the encoder using 60–90% of one CPU core. This is a specific test result, not a guarantee for every scene or concurrent workload.

These are different ways to reach the same target, not a blanket verdict that one generation will always work and the other will not. Check that the encoder selected by your streaming software uses the intended path, then measure performance with the actual source and workload. See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance note for the Pi 5 result and generation details.

Configure YouTube for 1080p30 H.264

YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these settings for H.264 at 1080p30:

  • Bitrate: 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Choose a constant bitrate (CBR) your connection can sustain reliably; leave practical headroom for ordinary network variation.
  • Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Connection: use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP.
  • Video and audio: use progressive video and test with audio and motion representative of the intended broadcast.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that the Pi’s encoder or internet service can hold the selected bitrate without interruption. Watch YouTube’s stream health during testing and resolve warnings before treating the setup as ready. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for its current settings.

Prepare power and cooling for sustained use

Use a power supply appropriate for the board and account for the camera, USB devices, and other connected peripherals. Raspberry Pi recommends 5V/3A for Pi 4 Model B and 5V/5A for Pi 5. Those recommendations do not establish the power needs of every peripheral combination.

Temperature can affect sustained performance. Raspberry Pi identifies 85°C as the SoC thermal limit and says progressive Arm throttling occurs between 80°C and 85°C. A heatsink or small fan can reduce throttling and improve performance, but cooling does not by itself establish reliability. Measure temperature and watch for throttling during a representative run. Raspberry Pi’s current guidance is in its temperature-monitoring documentation and power-supply documentation.

Test the complete setup before leaving it live

  1. Identify the board and source. Record the exact Pi model and whether video comes from a camera, capture device, or another source. Confirm that your software is using the encoding path available on that board.
  2. Start at 1080p30. It is the target supported by the cited Pi 5 performance result. Confirm that the source, encoder, and YouTube broadcast all agree on resolution and frame rate.
  3. Set YouTube’s ingest parameters. For H.264 1080p30, configure CBR, a sustainable bitrate in YouTube’s stated range, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS when supported.
  4. Check power and temperature under load. Use the board-appropriate supply, include connected devices, and observe the Pi during encoding rather than checking only at idle.
  5. Run a representative extended trial. Include the expected motion and audio, monitor YouTube stream health, and verify that the network and software behave as needed. A short successful test cannot prove 24/7 endurance.
  6. Decide how to handle interruptions and recordings. YouTube’s cited setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If retaining the entire day matters, plan a separate local recording and verify current YouTube behavior.

What can interrupt a 24/7 broadcast?

  • Insufficient or unstable upload: the selected video bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. Reduce the bitrate or improve the connection, then check stream health during a new test.
  • Encoding overload: the Pi may struggle with the actual source, conversion, overlays, or other processes even if it can encode a simpler 1080p30 test. Check encoder settings and system load; simplify the workload or test another suitable encoding path.
  • Heat or power instability: sustained load, peripheral demand, or inadequate cooling can affect operation. Observe temperature and throttling, confirm the supply matches the board recommendation, and retest with the full peripheral setup.
  • Network or power interruption: successful initial streaming does not establish automatic recovery after a drop. Test how your software and setup behave after an interruption; the cited YouTube and Raspberry Pi sources do not guarantee automatic reconnect for a particular build.
  • Archive expectations: a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours is outside the automatic-archiving duration established by YouTube’s cited instructions. Arrange separate recording if you need the whole program retained.
