How to Stream a Video Playlist to YouTube Live Using VLC

You can use VLC to play a playlist during a YouTube Live broadcast, but the documented workflow is to send VLC’s playback through a YouTube-capable encoder such as OBS. Create the YouTube event, prepare the playlist in VLC, capture VLC playback in the encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then check the Live Control Room preview before going live. VLC’s official playlist example sends its output over local HTTP; it does not document a direct VLC-to-YouTube connection.

What you need to stream a VLC playlist to YouTube Live

  • A computer with VLC and the video files you want to play.
  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and a scheduled or ready-to-use encoder event in YouTube Studio.
  • An encoder that can take VLC playback as a source and send a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s help names OBS as an encoder, but does not provide a specific VLC-capture scene tutorial.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.

The workflow uses two separate jobs: VLC plays the files in order, while the encoder sends the resulting picture and sound to YouTube. VideoLAN’s playlist broadcast example demonstrates sequential playback through VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM), but its output is local HTTP, not YouTube ingest. Do not paste that local HTTP address into YouTube’s server URL field.

Set up and test the playlist

  1. Load the files in broadcast order. Add the videos to VLC’s playlist and arrange them in the order viewers should see them. Play each file long enough to check its picture and sound before the event.
  2. Decide whether the sequence should repeat. VLC’s VLM documentation describes sequential inputs and a broadcast input list that can loop after the final input. See the VLM reference. Test the behavior with your own files; the cited documentation establishes sequential playback, not gapless transitions between clips.
  3. Keep the media available. Use local files that remain accessible for the full broadcast, and check the playlist order and audio levels. A missing or moved file can interrupt playback.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. Set the event’s title, description, visibility and schedule as intended. Review those details before broadcasting.
  3. In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube explains that the key identifies the destination for the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings help.
  4. Do not publish or share the key. If it is exposed or stops working, reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder’s saved settings.

Send VLC playback through an encoder

  1. Open the prepared playlist in VLC and start playback.
  2. In your encoder, add VLC playback as the video and audio source. The precise capture method depends on the encoder and computer setup; the cited YouTube and VideoLAN pages do not specify a particular OBS scene configuration for capturing VLC.
  3. In the encoder’s YouTube destination or stream settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from the event. Use YouTube’s ingest details rather than VLC’s local HTTP output address.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview for both picture and sound before selecting Go live for the scheduled event.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for encoder ingestion. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Audio can use AAC or MP3. Choose settings that both your encoder and connection can sustain; see YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Choose a bitrate and check bandwidth

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so do not treat one setting as universal. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Other combinations have different values in YouTube’s table.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Run an upload-speed test near the time and place you will broadcast.
  • Leave headroom below the measured upload rate; a stream set to consume the entire available upload capacity can become unstable when network conditions fluctuate.
  • Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate to YouTube’s guidance and to the connection you actually have.

Test the broadcast and finish cleanly

  1. Test with representative motion and audio before the real event. Confirm VLC advances through the intended files and the encoder captures both sound and picture.
  2. For a scheduled stream, YouTube advises preparing the encoder setup at least two hours beforehand and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. These are YouTube’s recommendations in its live streaming tips.
  3. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the event is reachable from its watch page or channel. Monitor audio and video during the broadcast.
  4. When finished, follow the event controls in Live Control Room and stop the encoder’s feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a stream lasting longer will be archived. See encoder setup help.

Troubleshoot common problems

YouTube does not receive the feed

  • Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key for this event.
  • If the key fails, create or reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.
  • Confirm the encoder is actually sending and that VLC is playing a source the encoder can capture.

The preview is present, but video or audio quality is poor

  • Check YouTube’s stream health and compare the encoder’s bitrate and format with the available upload capacity.
  • Check the VLC file’s sound level and confirm the encoder is capturing the intended audio source.
  • If the connection is unstable, reduce settings to a combination that the connection can sustain, using YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific guidance.

The playlist stops or skips a file

  • Check playlist order and whether each file still exists at the path VLC expects.
  • Test the full sequence in advance, including the transition at the end if the list is meant to repeat.
  • Do not assume switching between files will be seamless; the documented VLM behavior establishes sequence and looping, not gapless playback.

The connection is inconsistent

If practical, test a wired Ethernet connection and avoid saturating the network with other uploads. A cable is optional; the important point is stable upload capacity with headroom.

Copyright and archive considerations

Only broadcast videos and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. A playlist being technically playable in VLC does not establish that its contents are cleared for a public live stream. Review the rights for each file and the event’s intended use before broadcasting.

YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition is limited to streams under 12 hours. If you need a recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow rather than relying on an event longer than that to be saved automatically.
