How to Make a YouTube Live Stream Repeat a Video Automatically

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat a prerecorded video in a YouTube live stream, enable the file’s loop setting in your encoder. In OBS Studio, add the video as a Media Source and turn on Loop; then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s replay loop only repeats playback for a viewer—it does not rebroadcast your video as a live stream.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can access the video file and maintain an internet connection for the duration of the broadcast.
  • The video file you want to repeat, with audio and framing checked before going live.
  • A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

Set up an automatically looping live stream in OBS

1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then select the encoder workflow if prompted.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Keep the key private. YouTube explains how an encoder uses these details to connect: YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder.

2. Add the video to an OBS scene and enable Loop

  1. In OBS, create or select the scene you want to use.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  3. Enable Local File, browse to the video, and select it.
  4. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS defines this option as replaying the file when playback completes. See the OBS Project Media Sources documentation.
  5. Check the preview: confirm the picture is framed as intended and that the audio meters move when the video plays. If you use multiple scenes or sources, verify that the intended source is visible and audible in the scene you will send to YouTube.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. If using a custom server or service option, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the corresponding fields.
  3. Save the settings, then select Start Streaming in OBS. The file should play and start again automatically at its end because Loop is enabled.
  4. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check stream health before selecting Go live (or the equivalent control for your scheduled stream). The encoder sends the feed; YouTube’s control room is where you review it and make the broadcast live.

Choose settings and test before broadcasting

There is no single bitrate or codec that is right for every encoder, computer, network connection, and output resolution. YouTube’s guidance covers supported ingest formats and encoder settings; use the recommendations appropriate to your workflow rather than copying a value without checking your upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. See YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Test with the same video, audio, resolution, and encoder settings you plan to use live. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health.
  • Watch the preview for a complete loop, including the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning. Listen for missing or unexpectedly loud audio.
  • Check stream health and your connection during the test. Keep a local recording or other archive if you need a copy of the broadcast.
  • Use representative motion and sound in the test. A static opening frame or silent segment will not reveal problems that occur later in the file.

What happens to the YouTube archive?

A video looping in an encoder can keep feeding a live stream, but that does not mean YouTube will save a complete recording of the entire broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 stream should therefore have a separate recording or archive plan if retaining the full programme matters. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Copyright and content checks for documentary channels

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for every part of the recording, including footage, music, photographs, narration, and other embedded material. A video being prerecorded or publicly available does not by itself establish that you can rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright rules and live-stream policies apply to live broadcasts as well. Review YouTube Help: Copyright on YouTube and YouTube Help: Live streaming restrictions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a documentary channel, also consider whether the broadcast adds original editorial value and whether you have permission to use the underlying material. Repeating a file is a technical setting, not a guarantee that the content complies with YouTube’s policies or is eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot a video that does not repeat or a stream that will not start

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The video stops at the end Loop is off, or the wrong Media Source is active. Open the source properties, enable Loop, and confirm the source is visible in the scene being streamed.
YouTube receives no feed OBS is not streaming, or the URL/key is incorrect. Check OBS’s connection status and the stream settings in Live Control Room. Re-enter the current stream URL and key if necessary.
The preview appears, but the broadcast is not live The encoder feed has arrived, but the stream has not been started in Live Control Room. Review the preview and stream health, then use the Live Control Room control to go live.
Picture appears without sound The media source audio is muted, routed incorrectly, or absent in the file. Check OBS audio meters and mixer mute controls; confirm the file itself contains the expected audio.
The stream drops or becomes unstable The computer, encoder, or internet connection cannot sustain the outgoing feed. Test the full setup before the event, monitor stream health, and review YouTube’s encoder guidance. Do not assume that enabling Loop makes the computer or connection more reliable.
The stream is missing or incomplete in archives The broadcast may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit. Use a separate recording/archive plan for long or continuous broadcasts rather than relying on YouTube to retain the whole stream.
