To schedule a continuous prerecorded stream on YouTube, create a scheduled live event in YouTube Studio, then send that event a live feed from an encoder or cloud service that can play and loop your video or playlist. Scheduling creates the event page and reminder opportunity; it does not play a video file or keep a stream running by itself.
How do I schedule a 24/7 live stream on YouTube?
There are two separate jobs: schedule the YouTube event, then configure a system to supply its video and audio continuously. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the event’s stream URL and stream key; the encoder must be started to send the feed. YouTube’s instructions reviewed here do not describe a native file-looping control, so confirm with your encoder or cloud provider that it can play your file or playlist unattended.
1. Check that the channel can go live
YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
2. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage and select Schedule Stream.
- Choose whether to reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new event.
- Set the title, audience, visibility, and scheduled time, then save the event.
A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, and viewers may select Notify me. Scheduling makes it possible to promote the event, but viewers will not receive the prerecorded program until an encoder sends it. 3. Connect a file-capable encoder or service
Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and enter them in the encoder or service. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed. Confirm that the chosen tool supports your video format, looping or playlist sequencing, and unattended operation. These are capabilities of the encoder or service, not the act of scheduling on YouTube.
4. Test before the scheduled start
Use a test with similar movement and audio to the real program. Check the encoder connection, stream health and messages in Live Control Room, preview the feed, and confirm that the watch page is accessible. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Test any backup encoder or failover plan rather than assuming it will take over correctly.

5. Start the feed and monitor it
Start the encoder so it sends video and audio to the scheduled event. Watch for audio dropouts, frozen frames, stream-health warnings, and problems on the public watch page. If enabled, YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can let the encoder start or stop the stream; check the event settings before relying on them.
What encoder settings matter for a prerecorded YouTube stream?
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the final reference because supported settings and interface details can change. The listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in the documented context; listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. The settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the encoder’s output to the file and the current YouTube requirements rather than changing settings without testing.

Protocol and bandwidth
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, when supported. HLS is an alternative for certain encoder and codec needs, but has higher latency. Check upload capacity, not just download speed: YouTube’s network guidance says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. For example, a configured total bitrate should fit within roughly 80% of the stable upload capacity available to the streaming machine.
YouTube transcodes a live feed into output formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need for a stable incoming connection or a compatible encoder configuration. What should you plan for when the stream ends or is archived?
To end an encoder-sent stream, stop sending content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one complete automatic archive for a continuous event that runs longer than 12 hours; plan a separate recording or archive workflow if you need a full-length copy. Troubleshooting a scheduled prerecorded stream
- The event page exists but no video appears: Scheduling does not send a feed. Start the encoder or cloud service and verify that it has the correct event’s stream URL and key.
- The encoder connects but the program does not loop: Check whether the encoder supports file playback and unattended looping or playlist sequencing. YouTube scheduling alone does not provide those controls.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Check upload bandwidth and leave the recommended 20% headroom. Review Live Control Room stream-health messages, then test a recovery or backup-encoder procedure.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement before going live again.
- The stream is live but the watch page is unavailable: Preview it in Live Control Room and verify the event’s visibility and audience settings.
- The full continuous stream is missing from the archive: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer events, use a separate recording plan.
Copyright and content checks before going live
Make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video, music track, image, and other element in the program. A continuous or prerecorded format does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast material. Review YouTube’s current policies and any applicable rights-holder agreements before scheduling, and use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid. Scheduling and encoding do not guarantee monetization or policy compliance.
