To repeat nature footage on YouTube Live without an obvious jump, first edit and review the clip’s ending against its beginning, then enable looping in OBS. For one video, use a Media Source and turn on Loop; for several clips, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat playback, but they do not fix a visible cut or an audio click.
1. Prepare footage that can repeat naturally
Choose a passage whose beginning and end can sit comfortably beside each other. A fixed landscape, steady water, or a slow sky shot may be easier to loop than footage with a one-way action, such as an animal entering the frame and never leaving.
- Compare the first and last frames. Look for changes in horizon position, exposure, cloud shapes, water highlights, and the position of moving subjects.
- Play across the exact end-to-start boundary. Watch for a sudden change in framing, light, or motion.
- Listen across the same boundary with headphones. Check for an abrupt silence, a change in ambient sound, or a click.
- If the cut is conspicuous, adjust the in and out points in your editing application. A short crossfade may help when the movement and sound suit it, but it can also create doubled motion or a swell in audio.
- Render the edit and review the actual exported loop several times. A timeline preview alone may not reveal how the finished file repeats.
This is editing craft, not a special YouTube or OBS setting. A well-matched cut may look more natural than a crossfade; judge the rendered result with both eyes and ears.
2. Set up looping in OBS
One video: Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop. OBS describes this control as restarting the file after playback completes; it is off by default.
- Preview the source through at least two complete passes and inspect the end-to-start transition.

Several videos: VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source in OBS.
- Build the playlist from the local files you want to rotate.
- Check Loop Playlist and preview the transition from the last item back to the first.
OBS says Loop Playlist is enabled by default. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires a matching 64-bit VLC installation. A playlist loop repeats the sequence, but it cannot make mismatched clips look or sound seamless. OBS Media Sources details.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube and test the full stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Set the encoder parameters to match your intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current settings page rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Start the encoder, check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages, and watch the footage across a loop boundary before announcing the stream.
YouTube currently lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; at 720p30, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. Check the live values and guidance on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

YouTube recommends a representative test before going live: include audio and moving video similar to the planned broadcast, and monitor stream health and messages during the event. A static test screen may not expose the same issues as the real footage and soundtrack. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
4. Protect the footage and soundtrack rights
Use footage and audio you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to use. YouTube says it scans all live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination if the identified content remains. Even when you have a licence, a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to help prevent interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

5. Choose a playback approach that fits the job

For a basic loop, OBS is the straightforward software option. Consider a hardware encoder only if its scheduling workflow fits a specific need; it is not a prerequisite for repeating footage.

The video stops after one pass
For one clip, check that the Media Source’s Loop control is enabled. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm the playlist contains the intended files.

The restart is visible or the audio clicks
The loop setting only restarts playback. Revisit the clip’s in and out points, compare its first and last frames, and listen across the seam. Try a restrained crossfade only if it improves the rendered result; inspect for doubled movement or an audio swell.
The VLC playlist source is unavailable
Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the preview fails
Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration, then compare codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, rate control, and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance. Run a representative test with moving footage and audio, and read the stream-health messages rather than assuming the loop itself is the cause.
The live stream is interrupted by a copyright match
Review the footage and audio rights. If you hold a licence for third-party material, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; YouTube says a licence alone may not prevent a live interruption.

8. What to expect from YouTube archives
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that statement guarantees an archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. For a long-running nature broadcast, plan separately for any recording or archive you need. YouTube’s create-a-live-stream guide.
