You can livestream from a laptop with YouTube’s webcam mode or encoder software such as OBS. For a true 24/7 stream, though, a laptop must keep its encoder, internet connection and power running continuously—and YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. If you want to loop prerecorded videos rather than broadcast a live camera or screen, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can keep the YouTube stream running without leaving your laptop on.
Choose the right kind of 24/7 stream
First decide what the stream will show. The source determines whether a laptop is the right tool and what you need to keep running.

Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Its current help guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Set up a laptop encoder stream
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, check its settings before the intended start time.
- Connect the encoder: In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder’s stream settings, choose the service/server option that accepts a custom server if needed, then enter the URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture or publish it. You can manage stream keys in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose conservative settings: Select a resolution and bitrate your laptop can encode continuously and your measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 in its encoder guidance. Use a sustained upload test from the actual streaming location as an input, not a guarantee of all-day stability. YouTube does not specify a universal laptop CPU or GPU requirement for this workload. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance.
- Test the actual production load: Send a private or unlisted test if appropriate, with representative movement, overlays and audio. Check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Adjust if the encoder overloads, audio is absent or the connection is unstable. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and recommends choosing a quality suited to the connection. - Start the stream: Start streaming from the encoder. Confirm the preview and status in Live Control Room; for a scheduled stream, click Go live there when prompted. Do not assume that sending video from the encoder alone has made the scheduled broadcast public.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A continuous broadcast and a continuous archive are not the same thing. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” For a replay you need to preserve, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and record locally as a backup. YouTube also cautions that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Check the archive after each session rather than assuming it saved. A local recording is not a fail-safe: power loss, a full or failing disk, encoder problems or a damaged file can still interrupt or spoil it. Confirm that the recording file is growing during the stream and test that it plays. YouTube’s operational tips also advise checking local archive files and monitoring audio and video.

Keep the laptop and connection running
A laptop setup depends on the conditions at your particular location in India. Before relying on it, test sustained upload performance from the room and network you will use; check your ISP plan and terms; and work out how the laptop, router and any connected equipment will stay powered. Check available disk space, laptop temperatures under the intended encoder load, router behavior and any backup internet or power arrangement. No single speed test or accessory proves that a stream will stay up for 24 hours, and needs vary by laptop, footage and encoder settings.
Test the full setup for a meaningful period before treating it as unattended: look for encoder overload, dropped frames, network interruptions, audio problems and heat. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast. For documentaries and other prerecorded material, also confirm that you have the rights to stream it and that the content complies with YouTube policy. Do not assume that a video being available online means you can rebroadcast it.

Do I need OBS to stream from a laptop?
No. YouTube webcam mode is an option for a simple camera broadcast; an encoder is useful for scenes, overlays, gameplay or screen capture.

How fast does my upload speed need to be?
There is no single speed that fits every resolution, bitrate and setup. Test sustained upload from the actual streaming location, then choose encoder settings that the connection and laptop can handle reliably.
Can I livestream on YouTube from my laptop all day?
A laptop can send a long-running stream if the encoder, power and connection remain operational. For prerecorded loops, a cloud service can avoid relying on a laptop running continuously.
