FFmpeg saying it has started does not mean YouTube has accepted the feed or published the event. Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check for a preview and stream-health messages. Then verify the stream URL and key, the event’s publishing state, FFmpeg’s output settings, and your outbound connection. The exact cause depends on what those checks show.
First, identify where the stream is stopping
Separate the problem into stages. FFmpeg can generate audio and video locally without successfully connecting to YouTube; YouTube can receive a feed without publishing a scheduled event; and a published stream can still be inaccessible to viewers. YouTube’s setup and troubleshooting guidance supports checking each stage separately.
| Stage | What to inspect | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | FFmpeg output and logs; whether the intended audio and video are being generated | Whether FFmpeg is producing a feed locally |
| Connection and authentication | Server URL, protocol, stream key, and connection errors | Whether FFmpeg is reaching the intended ingest endpoint with the intended key |
| YouTube ingest | Live Control Room preview, health indicator, and timestamped errors | Whether YouTube is receiving the feed and what issue it reports |
| Event publication | Scheduled stream state and the Go live action | Whether a feed with a preview has also been published |
| Viewer access and network | Upload capacity, connection stability, and the watch page | Whether delivery or viewer access is impaired beyond local encoding |
Work through these checks in order
-
Look for YouTube’s preview and health messages
Open the intended event in Live Control Room. If a preview appears, YouTube is receiving video; read the health indicator and its timestamped messages rather than relying on FFmpeg’s startup output. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. An unresolved message may reappear. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and Live streaming error messages.
-
Match the URL and key to the intended stream
In Live Control Room, compare the server URL and stream key with the values configured in FFmpeg. The URL is the destination and the key is the credential YouTube uses to accept the feed. Make sure both belong to the event you are checking, not another stream. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube recommends copying a new stream key and updating the encoder. Treat a key as a secret; do not publish it in logs or screenshots. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.

-
Check whether the scheduled event still needs to be published
For a scheduled stream, sending data from FFmpeg and making the event live are separate actions. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. If there is a preview but viewers still see the event as offline, check the event’s state and whether that action has been taken. See Manage live stream settings.
-
Use the explicit ingest error before changing FFmpeg settings
Read the timestamped health message and note when it occurred. YouTube lists incorrect stream format and codec problems among live-stream errors. An explicit error is more useful than changing several encoder options at once: adjust the setting implicated by the message, then check the preview and health state again. See Live streaming error messages.

Compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s encoder guidance
Check that the protocol, video and audio codecs, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval match the guidance for your chosen YouTube workflow. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Requirements and recommendations depend on protocol and stream type, so use the current settings guidance for the workflow you selected rather than treating one preset as universal. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If using RTMPS, verify the secure endpoint
Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; do not assume an ordinary RTMP endpoint is interchangeable. YouTube says both the protocol and server should be
rtmps. For the documented SSL-error case, YouTube suggests trying port 443; for a timeout, recheck the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. RTMPS is “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” and provides encryption, according to YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. The Tool Desk

Check upload capacity and connection stability
The total stream bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. A locally healthy FFmpeg output does not rule out a problem on the outbound connection: check the encoder locally first, then investigate network capacity and stability if local output looks right. See YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance.
-
Confirm the event is published and viewers can open it
Once the feed and event state look correct, check the channel and watch pages where the stream is meant to be available. YouTube recommends testing the stream before the event; this helps distinguish a feed visible in the dashboard from a stream viewers can actually access. See Streaming tips.

Common symptoms and what to do next
- No preview in Live Control Room: confirm that FFmpeg is targeting the correct server URL and stream key, then read its connection errors and YouTube’s health messages. If you use RTMPS, verify that the encoder supports it and that you copied the secure endpoint.
- Preview appears, but the scheduled stream remains offline: check the event state and click Go live after the preview appears if the workflow requires it.
- A format or codec error appears: change the implicated output setting to match YouTube’s encoder guidance for that protocol and stream type.
- An RTMPS SSL error or timeout appears: recheck the RTMPS URL and encoder support; for the documented SSL-error case, try port 443.
- FFmpeg output looks healthy, but delivery is unstable: check available upload bandwidth, leave the recommended headroom, and investigate the outbound connection.
- The dashboard looks healthy, but viewers cannot watch: check the event’s publication state and test access from the channel and watch pages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream built from uploaded videos, rather than live camera input, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not a fix for a YouTube ingest or event-status problem in an existing FFmpeg setup.
