Best OBS Settings for a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream from OBS, start with CBR encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; those are not the minimum values. Leave upload headroom, test a representative scene, and monitor stream health after launch.

Recommended OBS settings for a continuous YouTube stream

There is no universally best preset: available encoders depend on your computer and OBS build, while reliable bitrate depends on your actual connection. Use these settings as a starting point, then test with the content you intend to stream.

Setting Starting point What to check
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) YouTube lists CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video codec H.264 for a broadly practical starting point YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use them only when the encoder and workflow support them.
Resolution and frame rate Choose the lowest combination that meets the programme’s needs and that you can sustain Higher resolution and frame rate require more upload capacity and encoding resources.
Audio Stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps YouTube’s advanced recommendations list these settings for stereo audio.

YouTube’s other recommended advanced video settings include square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Check the encoder controls available in your OBS setup; some options depend on the chosen encoder.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through its servers. HLS is another ingestion option with additional setup requirements and a different latency and encoder workflow, so it is not a drop-in setting to change for a generic best-settings recipe. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a bitrate that fits both quality and your connection

The following figures are YouTube’s minimum and recommended video bitrates, in Mbps, for common resolutions and frame rates. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them for a continuous stream.

Resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

For example, if you use H.264 at 1080p30, 5 Mbps is YouTube’s listed minimum and 14 Mbps is its recommended bitrate. Do not mistake the minimum for the recommended value. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended rate, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as needed while keeping the stream stable and observing YouTube’s listed minimum as a platform guideline.

YouTube recommends testing your upload speed and keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to OBS. Read YouTube’s streaming tips and consult the full codec-specific bitrate table for additional resolutions, including 1440p and 4K.

Set up OBS and YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Create or schedule the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its stream key to connect OBS. A stream key is a credential: treat it like a password and never show it in a public screenshot or example. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains settings such as latency and DVR, which affect the viewer experience but are not OBS bitrate controls.
  2. Configure OBS output. Select an encoder supported by your computer, set rate control to CBR, enter a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose your codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Set audio to stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps where those controls are available.
  3. Run a representative test. Include the actual kind of motion and audio the stream will contain. YouTube advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before relying on the configuration.
  4. Go live and keep watch. Monitor stream health, audio, and video after launch. For a continuous broadcast, establish a routine to check the incoming feed and confirm that local recordings, if enabled, are growing as expected.

YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips also recommend setting up in advance, previewing before going live, confirming the event is accessible, and testing backup-encoder failover if your setup uses one. Do not assume that OBS or YouTube guarantees uninterrupted uptime.

Keep a 24/7 stream running: OBS versus cloud playback

OBS is a live production tool: the computer running it, its encoder, and its network connection are part of the broadcast path. If you are using OBS unattended, plan for those dependencies and test the recovery process you intend to use. YouTube’s cited operational guidance does not establish a universal OBS reconnect value or an uptime promise.

If the goal is to loop uploaded, pre-recorded videos rather than produce a live camera or desktop programme, a cloud playback service is a different workflow. For ways to keep a YouTube live stream running, StreamNeo is the first option to try: it loops uploads from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.

Troubleshoot an unstable OBS stream

Symptom Likely issue What to do
Stream health reports dropped frames or an unstable connection Available upload bandwidth may be below the total stream bitrate, or may fluctuate on a shared network. Retest upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the connection sustains the stream.
Video looks poor despite a stable connection The chosen bitrate may be too low for the resolution, frame rate, or visual motion. Compare the setting with YouTube’s codec-specific recommended bitrate; if the connection cannot support it, reduce resolution or frame rate rather than pushing an unstable bitrate.
Encoder struggles or output stutters The chosen encoder or output demands may exceed what the computer can sustain. Try a supported encoder, reduce output resolution or frame rate, and test a representative scene before going live again.
Viewers cannot move smoothly between quality options Keyframe timing may not be consistent. Use a consistent 2-second keyframe interval. OBS notes that consistent intervals can help YouTube’s quality selector move between output formats smoothly: OBS transcoding guidance.
The stream stops after a disconnect A network or encoder interruption can break the broadcast; an always-on setup needs a tested recovery plan. Monitor stream health and test backup-encoder failover if available. Do not rely on an assumed reconnect setting or guaranteed uptime.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for a 24/7 stream

Before looping a recording or playlist, confirm you have the rights needed to use its video and audio on YouTube. A continuous or pre-recorded format does not itself establish permission to use copyrighted material. YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-health checks also do not determine whether a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies. Review the applicable rules in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder and check permissions for each item in your playlist.
