First find where the picture disappears: OBS preview, a local recording, or only the YouTube live output. If the preview is black, troubleshoot the scene and capture source; if preview and recording look right, investigate the live-output path separately. The right fix depends on whether you are capturing a game, an app window, a desktop, or a video player.
Locate where the black screen starts
Check the OBS preview, then make a short local recording and compare it with the YouTube live output. Note which view is black before changing settings; this separates a capture problem from a problem later in the output path.
- Black in OBS preview: start with the scene, source visibility, and capture type.
- Preview looks right but the local recording is black: check what OBS is recording and the active output settings before changing the YouTube stream.
- Preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black: treat this as a stream-only problem; the OBS guidance cited here does not identify one universal YouTube-specific fix.
For the last case, collect the OBS log, OBS version, operating system, capture source, and GPU details before trying more invasive changes.
Fix a black OBS preview
Confirm the scene and source
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream.
- In the Sources list, confirm the intended source is present and visible. An eye icon with visibility disabled means the source will not appear.
- Open the source properties and confirm it targets the correct game, application window, or display. For a specific-window Game Capture source, the target application must be running and selected.

Match the capture source to the content
- Supported game: try Game Capture first and verify its target and mode.
- Application or game that Game Capture cannot hook: try Window Capture. Some titles work better in windowed or borderless fullscreen mode; consult OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide for known cases.
- Whole desktop: use Display Capture when that is the intended source, or compare it diagnostically with another capture type. Compatibility varies by operating system and setup.
- Video-player area alone is black: browser rendering or playback restrictions may be involved. Do not assume a capture setting can make every protected video capturable.
Check GPU assignment on a multi-GPU computer
On some systems, the GPU used by OBS and the GPU rendering the game can affect Game Capture. OBS generally advises using the high-performance GPU for both. The correct configuration depends on Windows, OBS version, hardware, and capture type, so follow the current OBS laptop troubleshooting guidance rather than applying old GPU-switching instructions indiscriminately.
That OBS guide describes version-specific behavior for its newer Display Capture method: it requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. These are requirements for that method as described in the guide, not a general guarantee that every capture setup will work.

Isolate overlays and hook-based software
Temporarily close overlays, FPS counters, and other utilities that hook into games, then test again. OBS identifies RivaTuner Statistics Server and MSI Afterburner among common conflicts. For newer RTSS versions, OBS documents a compatible setting; consult its troubleshooting page for the applicable version and steps. Re-enable other software one item at a time after testing so you can identify a conflict rather than leaving unrelated tools disabled.
Test fullscreen behavior and administrator mode selectively
Some fullscreen games stop rendering while minimized or after you alt-tab, making the capture appear black even though the source is configured correctly. Keep the game visible (for example, on another monitor) or make a test recording while it is active. OBS notes that certain games may require OBS to run as administrator; use that only as an application-specific test, and return to normal permissions if it makes no difference.

If only the video player is black
If the rest of the desktop is visible but the rectangle containing a video is black, the issue may be specific to playback or browser rendering rather than OBS’s general capture. YouTube’s help page mentions hardware acceleration while troubleshooting a green video-player screen, but that does not establish disabling it as a reliable fix for OBS black screens. You can test browser settings cautiously, but do not expect a change to bypass playback protections or make protected content capturable. YouTube video playback troubleshooting.
Use only content you have the rights and permission to stream. A black capture is not a reason to try to defeat a playback restriction.

If OBS looks right but YouTube Live is black
When both OBS preview and a local recording show the intended picture, the capture source is less likely to be the point where the image disappears. Check that OBS is sending the intended program and that the live session is using the expected stream setup, then compare again. The available official OBS guidance does not document a single YouTube-only cure for this symptom, so avoid changing capture, GPU, or browser settings at random.
If it persists, save the OBS log and record the OBS version, operating system, capture type, GPU configuration, and whether the local recording is correct. Those details help distinguish an OBS output issue from a YouTube-side issue.

Check compatibility before changing performance settings
Baseline compatibility is not the same as guaranteed performance at every scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and encoder setting. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, and macOS 11 or later, as baseline requirements in its system requirements. If capture works but streaming fails under load, assess encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity rather than treating a black image as proof that one particular setting is wrong.
