How to Make OBS Play a Podcast Playlist Continuously on YouTube in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For multiple podcast files, add OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source, load the files in the order you want, and enable Loop Playlist. For a single file, use Media Source and enable Loop. This repeats the media; it does not keep a YouTube broadcast alive if your computer, OBS, or internet connection stops.

The workflow below uses local files and YouTube’s standard encoder setup. The documented steps are not India-specific; they apply to a channel in India that can livestream. Before broadcasting, make sure you have rights to rebroadcast every episode and any music it contains.

Before you set up the playlist

Check that your YouTube channel can livestream

YouTube’s current help guidance says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before your planned broadcast. Check the requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guide.

Confirm the rights to every episode

YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights to use live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights, and to comply with relevant laws and regulations. Owning or downloading a podcast episode does not automatically grant permission to rebroadcast it. Ask the rights holder about the specific episodes, music, and permissions you need; these general sources do not settle India-specific licensing questions. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

Prepare accessible local files

Keep the podcast audio or video files on the computer running OBS. The OBS Media Sources guide lists common formats including MP3 and MP4. For a multi-file VLC playlist, install VLC. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when used with 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Choose the right OBS source

Setup What repeats Dependency and trade-off
Media Source with Loop One podcast file Simple for a single file; it does not create a multi-file playlist. OBS documentation
VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist The list starts over after its final item Requires VLC; check file order and what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documentation

VLC Video Source also offers Shuffle Playlist if you want the files played in a different order. For a predictable sequence, leave shuffle off and arrange the files yourself.

Set up and loop the files in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, select the scene that should show the podcast. Add a VLC Video Source from the Sources panel. The VLC playlist source is available when VLC is installed; OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources fit into a scene.
  2. Load the files in playback order. In the VLC Video Source properties, add the local podcast files to the playlist and arrange them in the intended sequence. Confirm the paths point to files the computer can access.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist. This makes the list return to its beginning after the last item. Use Shuffle Playlist only if you want a shuffled sequence rather than the listed order.
  4. Set visibility behavior for scene changes. OBS’s VLC source has a Visibility Behaviour setting. Its documented default is to stop playback when the source is hidden and restart it when visible. If the playlist should continue through scene changes, choose the continue behavior if it is available in your installed version. Check the behavior in a rehearsal before relying on it.
  5. For just one file, use Media Source instead. Add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop in its properties. Do not use this as a substitute for a multi-file playlist.
  6. Test the sequence locally. Confirm that the first file starts, each next file plays, and the playlist returns to the beginning. Check that the scene shows the video, if present, and that OBS receives the intended audio.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or select one you already prepared. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address for sending the encoder feed; do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
  3. Start the encoder and preview the incoming feed. In Live Control Room, verify that the video and audio arrive as expected before starting the public broadcast. Follow YouTube’s event controls and confirm the event is live when you intend it to be.
  4. Monitor the broadcast. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network running. Watch the YouTube preview and check both audio and video quality. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of about 20% above the total stream bitrate; see YouTube’s streaming tips.

What “continuous” does—and does not—mean

Loop Playlist repeats the files inside OBS. It does not make the broadcast independent of the encoder or the computer: if OBS stops, the computer shuts down, or the network fails, the YouTube feed can stop. YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing before going live, monitoring audio and video, and leaving upload bandwidth headroom; its guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation.

When you deliberately stop the OBS stream, the encoder feed ends. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see YouTube’s encoder stream guide.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS if needed. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Confirm the installed versions match the system architecture.
  • The list stops after the last file: Open the VLC Video Source properties and turn on Loop Playlist. For one file in Media Source, enable Loop instead.
  • Playback stops when you change scenes: Check the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while hidden; choose the continue option if available and test your installed version.
  • A file is skipped or fails to play: Check that its path is valid and that the file opens locally. Remove and re-add it if necessary, then test the playlist from the beginning.
  • YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and stream key for the selected YouTube event, that the encoder is started, and that the network is online. Treat the key like a password; if it was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • The preview is unstable or poor quality: Check available upload capacity and leave the headroom YouTube recommends—about 20% above the total stream bitrate. Rehearse and monitor the preview before making the event public.
  • Livestreaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
  • A rights concern arises: Do not assume that a publicly available or downloaded episode is cleared for rebroadcast. Confirm permissions for the episode and embedded music with the relevant rights holder before streaming.
