Be explicit: a Super Chat is an optional paid message highlighted in YouTube Live chat—not a charitable donation, a required way to participate, or a promise of a particular response. If you are raising money for a cause, use YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations and explain that separately; YouTube says Supers are unavailable on streams using that feature.
What viewers are paying for
Super Chat is a paid YouTube fan-funding feature that highlights a viewer’s message in live chat. Super Stickers are paid animated images that appear there. YouTube expressly says these features are not crowdfunding or donation tools. Calling a creator-directed Super Chat a “donation” can therefore give viewers the wrong impression about what they are buying and where the money goes. A purchase does not have to be the price of admission to your stream. Avoid implying that viewers must pay to join the conversation, or that a Super Chat guarantees a reply, a question will be answered, or another specific result. If you offer a response or other benefit, describe it accurately and only promise what you have actually defined and can honor.
Wording that makes the distinction clear
You can say:
If you’d like to support the stream, you can optionally send a Super Chat. It highlights your message in live chat. It’s a paid YouTube fan-funding feature, not a charitable donation, and you’re welcome to join the conversation without buying one.

This describes the feature, makes the purchase optional, and leaves room for viewers to participate without paying. Thanking contributors and inviting them to share questions or thoughts are consistent with YouTube’s creator tips; keep any acknowledgment separate from a guaranteed paid benefit. If the stream is raising money for charity
Use YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations when you mean charitable giving, and name the fundraiser as the route for those contributions. This stream is using YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations for the fundraiser. Those donations go through the fundraiser feature; Super Chats are a separate paid fan-funding feature and are turned off on this stream.
Do not say that Super Chat proceeds go to the cause unless that is independently accurate and clearly qualified. A creator-directed Super Chat is not the same as a donation made through the fundraiser feature.

Check that Supers are available before asking
Availability depends on channel eligibility and the stream itself. YouTube’s requirements include the applicable YouTube Partner Program and Commerce Product Module terms, being at least 18, and living in a supported region. Check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before directing viewers to Supers; requirements and availability can change. - The video has a YouTube Giving fundraiser.
- Live chat or comments are turned off.

YouTube says creators receive 70% of confirmed Supers revenue after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees are deducted; YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This is YouTube’s platform guidance, not a guaranteed net amount for each purchase. Don’t describe the percentage as applying to the viewer’s full payment without those qualifications. YouTube also says creators can view purchase activity and moderate Supers as they do live chat. Creators are responsible for understanding and complying with applicable laws, including rules about offering or receiving money through Supers. The platform guidance does not establish the legal or tax treatment for every jurisdiction, so avoid broad legal or tax assurances.
Keep the ask appreciative, not pressuring
- Describe the actual feature: a highlighted paid message or a paid animated Sticker.
- Use “optional” language and make clear that viewers may take part without buying.
- Thank contributors without implying they bought a guaranteed reply or outcome.
- For a fundraiser, direct viewers to Live Chat Donations and do not blur it with Supers.
- Before asking, verify that Supers are available for the channel and stream.
