That includes earning a share of Watch Page or Shorts Feed ads, YouTube Premium revenue, or turning on YPP fan-funding and Shopping features. YouTube may still show ads on a channel’s videos, but those ads do not mean the creator receives a share.
Some channels can apply for an earlier, expanded-YPP tier at 500 subscribers. That is an application route—not monetization before approval—and it is available only in participating countries or regions. Requirements and feature eligibility are as published by YouTube on October 3, 2026.
What can you monetize before YPP approval?
No YouTube-native YPP monetization feature is established as available to a channel before it is accepted into YPP. YouTube’s Commerce Products policies require creators to apply and be accepted into YPP before turning on fan-funding features. The same distinction applies to the YPP feature set: eligibility to apply is not permission to use features while an application is pending.
- Before acceptance: You cannot count on YouTube memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, YouTube Shopping, Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, or YouTube Premium revenue being available to your channel.
- After acceptance into expanded YPP: Eligible creators may gain access to fan funding and Shopping, subject to location and each feature’s requirements.
- After meeting the higher threshold and being accepted: Eligible creators can access Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to the applicable terms and requirements.
These are YouTube-native options. Sponsorships, merchandise sales outside YouTube Shopping, or other off-platform arrangements are separate from YPP features; the YouTube eligibility rules described here do not establish their availability or terms.

Can YouTube show ads before a channel is monetized?
Yes. YouTube reserves the right to serve ads on content. Its YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility guidance says that a creator who does not meet the higher YPP criteria may still see ads on their content but is not yet eligible to receive a share of that revenue.
So an ad appearing before or during a video is not evidence that the channel is earning from it. Ad display and eligibility for an ad-revenue share are different things.
What can a channel monetize at 500 subscribers?
In countries and regions where expanded YPP is available, a channel can apply for earlier access once it has all of the following:

- 500 subscribers;
- three valid public uploads in the previous 90 days; and
- either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days.
Meeting those thresholds lets the channel apply; it does not guarantee acceptance. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. Check YouTube Studio > Earn for the status of your channel and the features available in your location. YouTube’s expanded YPP overview describes the regional availability and application route.
Features at the expanded-YPP level
For accepted, eligible creators, expanded YPP can provide access to channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping. Shopping can include connecting an official merchandise store, promoting your own products, or promoting products from other brands. Availability depends on the feature and channel; the threshold alone does not switch everything on.
Additional conditions for fan funding
For fan-funding features, YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies also require the creator to be at least 18, live where the individual feature is offered, and accept the relevant Commerce Product Module terms. Individual features have their own eligibility requirements.

When do Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and Premium revenue become available?
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s published higher threshold for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue is 1,000 subscribers plus either:
- 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months; or
- 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days.
Reaching the threshold is not the same as being accepted. YouTube reviews the channel, and the applicable feature terms still matter. YouTube’s YPP overview and monetization feature guidance describe the published criteria.

Shorts Feed viewing time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. Paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward YPP thresholds. YouTube says qualifying follow-on organic views after promoted content can count, but paid promotion itself does not satisfy the thresholds.

A future threshold change
YouTube has announced that, from February 1, 2027, new creators will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over the previous 90 days for ad and Premium revenue access. That is a future rule, not the threshold active on October 3, 2026. YouTube says the earlier fan-funding and Shopping entry thresholds will remain unchanged. - Open YouTube Studio while signed in to the channel you want to monetize.
- Select Earn in the Studio menu.
- Review the eligibility progress and the features shown for your channel and region.
- If YouTube offers an application, follow the prompts. Treat the application as pending until YouTube accepts the channel and makes the relevant features available.
Because expanded YPP is not available everywhere and features have separate requirements, the Earn area is the practical place to confirm what your channel can apply for.

Before streaming documentaries, confirm you have permission to use every video, soundtrack, image, and other element. A live format does not make copyrighted or reused material eligible for monetization. YouTube’s YPP review and policies still apply.
