To make a YouTube live stream restart automatically after a disconnect, enable automatic reconnect in your encoder. In OBS Studio, turn on Automatically Reconnect and set a retry delay and maximum retry count in the output settings. This makes OBS retry its connection; it does not guarantee that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast will recover from every interruption.
YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop controls are different: they let the encoder start or stop streaming. YouTube’s help page does not describe them as automatic reconnection or as a guarantee of recovery after a dropped connection.
How do I set OBS to reconnect after a dropped stream?
OBS handles automatic retrying. The precise menu labels or location can vary by OBS version, but look in the output settings for the reconnect controls.
- Open OBS settings. Select Settings, then open Output and locate the automatic reconnect options. If the labels differ in your version, consult the current OBS interface and reference.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect. This tells OBS to try to re-establish its output connection when it is lost.
- Set the retry delay and maximum retries. OBS’s reference says the wait between attempts doubles after each retry. The retry count limits the attempts; setting it to zero disables reconnecting. OBS does not prescribe one best delay or attempt count for every stream, so choose values appropriate to your event and connection.
- Save the settings and test before an important broadcast. Check that OBS can reconnect and that the stream is visible and healthy in YouTube Live Control Room.
Automatic reconnect retries the same encoder connection. It cannot fix a continuing network outage, an incorrect stream key, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does YouTube automatically reconnect a live stream?
Do not treat YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop as a reconnect setting. YouTube documents those controls as allowing the encoder to start or stop streaming. Reconnection is configured in the encoder, such as OBS. Even when the encoder retries successfully, verify the viewer-facing event in Live Control Room rather than assuming the broadcast has resumed.
Your stream key and server URL tell the encoder where to send its feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Confirm that OBS is using the correct key and URL if it cannot reconnect. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or publish it.

Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
A retry can only help once the underlying connection works again. OBS lists unstable connectivity, a bitrate that exceeds available upload capacity, Wi-Fi instability, faulty network equipment or cables, outdated network drivers, security software, and VPN software among possible causes.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
Use a speed test to assess upload capacity, then choose stream quality and bitrate that your connection can sustain consistently—not just during a brief test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not a guarantee. YouTube publishes bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the row for your actual encoding settings rather than applying one number to every stream. Test the stream before going live and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Stabilize the network path
- Use Ethernet where possible. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming; Wi-Fi can be less stable.
- Inspect the Ethernet cable, modem, router, network card, switches, and extenders for faults or intermittent connections.
- Check whether VPN or security software, bundled network-optimization software, or outdated network drivers are disrupting the encoder’s connection.
- If the problem persists, contact your internet provider. Route congestion or changes on the provider’s network may be outside your control.
What to check when reconnect attempts fail
- Check OBS output status. Confirm whether it is still retrying or has exhausted its configured attempts. If OBS is no longer sending, resolve the connection problem before starting the output again.
- Check Live Control Room. Look at the preview and stream health to see whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether the viewer-facing event is live.
- Verify destination details. Confirm that the encoder is pointed to the intended YouTube event and is using its correct stream key and URL.
- Reduce strain on the connection. If upload capacity is unstable or lower than expected, reduce bitrate or stream quality, then test again.
- Check local recording if you are recording. Confirm that the archive file is still growing; a local recording can preserve footage even if the live connection fails.
How to prepare backup encoder failover
For an important broadcast, a separately configured backup encoder can provide another feed if the primary encoder fails. This is different from OBS retrying the same connection, and it should be tested in advance. YouTube advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. A backup setup is not necessary for every casual stream.
- Set up the encoders before the event and start them early enough to check the preview.
- Verify that the event is accessible to its intended audience.
- During the test, confirm the player switches to the backup feed when the primary is stopped.
- Monitor audio and video quality, stream health, and any local recording.
