Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key, test playback and audio, and start the broadcast.
Before you start
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are channel eligibility conditions, not OBS settings. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Install OBS Studio and, if you plan to use the VLC Video source, VLC. OBS’s playlist source depends on VLC being installed. Check that the versions you install are compatible with your macOS version; the Mac mini generation, macOS version, and software versions are not specified here.
- Prepare local podcast files in the order you want them to play. OBS documents local file playback and playlists; that does not establish that arbitrary podcast feed links will work as a reliable playlist source.
- Make sure you have permission to stream every episode and any music, intro, outro, or clips it contains.
Prepare the podcast playlist
For one episode
In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local audio or video file. OBS documents common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Check the file plays as expected. If you want it to repeat, configure the source’s looping behavior.
For multiple episodes
Add a VLC Video source and build its playlist from the local files in the intended order. OBS documents playlist order, shuffle, and the Loop Playlist control. Looping defaults on and shuffle defaults off in the documented settings. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence, and turn playlist looping off if the broadcast should stop after the final item. Confirm the source’s behavior when you change scenes: playback may continue or stop depending on its source settings.
Add podcast artwork, a still image, or another appropriate visual source if you want viewers to see something while listening. A playlist-only broadcast does not require a camera, capture card, microphone, or audio interface; those are only relevant if you add live commentary or record new audio.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the encoder stream: open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream, or schedule an event if you want a planned start time. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Copy the stream URL and key: in the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio, copy both values. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details as prompted. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Use RTMPS where available: YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS. Use the server URL YouTube supplies for the event rather than substituting an address from another setup.
- Start the encoder and check the preview: start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not remove the need to check the preview and go live through YouTube’s event controls when required by the selected workflow.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Set OBS’s output profile to match the YouTube stream and the Mac mini’s stable upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For a standard 1080p30 H.264 stream, its table recommends 10 Mbps video and 128 Kbps stereo audio; for 720p30, it recommends 5 Mbps video. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Mac mini or network will sustain the stream. YouTube encoder settings
Use the bitrate row for the resolution and frame rate you actually select. If the connection cannot maintain that rate with headroom, reduce the output resolution or frame rate rather than relying on a fragile connection. Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Test the actual program: play through the playlist, not just a short placeholder. Confirm that episodes advance in order, the selected loop or stop behavior is correct, and audio is present at a suitable level.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health: confirm the picture and sound arrive in Live Control Room and that YouTube reports a healthy feed. Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, as YouTube recommends.
- Allow setup time: YouTube’s current tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility requirements. YouTube streaming tips
- Go live and keep watch: start the event using YouTube’s Live Control Room controls, then continuously monitor audio, video, and stream health. When the program is over, stop the encoder and end the event. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube encoder instructions
Copyright and podcast permissions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the rights for each episode and all embedded music or clips, and resolve any required allowlisting with the owner before broadcasting. YouTube copyright and live-stream guidance
Troubleshoot common problems
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source list again. OBS’s documented VLC playlist source requires VLC to be installed.

The playlist does not advance or repeats unexpectedly
Verify that the VLC playlist contains the intended local files and order. Check Loop Playlist and shuffle settings: looping is on by default and shuffle is off by default in OBS’s documented settings. Test the transition between files before going live.
YouTube does not show a preview
Confirm that OBS is using the current stream URL and key from the correct YouTube event, that the encoder is running, and that the stream key has not been changed or mistyped. Keep the key private; if you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

The stream buffers or reports poor health
Check that upload capacity is stable and meets YouTube’s recommended headroom, including traffic from other devices. Lower the video bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a profile the connection can sustain, then repeat the test in Live Control Room.
The live broadcast is interrupted for copyright
Check YouTube’s notice and identify the matched material. Remove or replace material you do not have the rights to stream. If you are licensed, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting before restarting with the same material.
