First find out whether FFmpeg never opened the missing episode, opened it but handled its timestamps incorrectly, or sent a complete sequence that YouTube later failed to deliver cleanly. Those are different problems with different fixes. Without your command, playlist and FFmpeg log, no single cause can be assumed.
1. Find where the episode disappears
Rerun the exact live command with its normal log output visible; do not suppress it with options such as -loglevel quiet. Follow the log from input opening through the output. Note the input number and stream information for each expected episode, the first file that is not opened, and any warning or timestamp discontinuity.
- The episode is never reported as opened: investigate the playlist contents, order, filename, path, quoting, permissions and whether the command is reading the playlist you edited.
- FFmpeg opens every episode, but the output jumps, has a gap or drifts out of sync: investigate stream compatibility and duration or timestamp information.
- The local output contains the complete sequence, but the YouTube stream does not: check output mapping, the outgoing connection and YouTube’s stream health.
This is a diagnostic sequence, not a claim about the cause in your setup. The exact cause requires the command, playlist, complete log and probe output for the affected files.
2. Check the concat playlist itself
If you are using FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, inspect the literal playlist passed to -i. It uses one file directive per input path. Compare every entry against the intended episode order, including spelling, directory and extension.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp3'
file 'episode-02.mp3'
file 'episode-03.mp3'
For the automatically detected script format, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the first line exactly: no leading space and no byte-order mark. Paths containing spaces or special characters need the documented escaping or quoting. Follow FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for the precise syntax and path-safety rules.
Do not add -safe 0 as a blanket fix. It relaxes path acceptance rules; it will not repair a misspelled path, an inaccessible or corrupt file, or incorrect duration metadata. Use it only if your actual paths require it, and use the safest setting compatible with those paths.

3. Compare the episode streams and durations
The concat demuxer is intended for files with matching streams, codecs and time bases. Podcast episodes may look alike to a listener but differ in their encoded stream layout or timing. Use ffprobe on each file and compare stream count, codec, time base, sample rate, channel layout and reported duration.
Duration matters because the demuxer uses the preceding file’s duration to place the next one. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate duration data—including duration data for a truncated file—can cause artifacts. If a duration looks suspect, test the file by itself and compare its reported length with a full decode or another trustworthy measurement. The demuxer supports a per-file duration directive, but only override metadata when you know the correct value; guessing can shift the timing problem rather than fix it. See the concat demuxer documentation.

4. Choose the concat method that fits the files
| Workflow | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer with stream copy | The inputs have compatible streams, codecs and time bases, and keeping the encoded audio is appropriate. | Avoids re-encoding, but does not normalize incompatible inputs. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Episodes need normalization or their stream layouts are not suitable for file-level concatenation. | Requires re-encoding; choose output settings deliberately. |
FFmpeg’s concat FAQ describes the filter for workflows that require re-encoding and the demuxer for avoiding re-encoding when file-level concatenation is unsuitable. Do not use stream copy merely because it is faster if the episode streams do not match.
To isolate playlist handling from live ingest, you can make a local diagnostic output:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i episodes.ffconcat -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 diagnostic.m4a
This is an illustrative test, not a verified command for your files or a universal YouTube requirement. The AAC encoding, bitrate and sample rate shown are one practical compatibility test; -safe 0 is included only for paths that need it. Confirm that the resulting file plays through each suspected boundary before changing the live command.
5. Verify which audio reaches the output
When a command has multiple inputs or generated streams, check that the intended audio stream is actually selected. FFmpeg’s -map option lets you select output streams explicitly; automatic selection follows FFmpeg’s own rules. Do not copy a stream index from another command: the right mapping depends on your inputs and any filtergraph. Consult the FFmpeg concat FAQ and inspect your command before changing the mapping.

6. Check YouTube after the local sequence is correct
First play the complete local output through the episode boundaries. If it is correct locally, then assess what FFmpeg sends and what YouTube receives. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its live encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency and say not to exceed 4 seconds. The guide’s advanced stereo audio recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a fix for an episode absent from FFmpeg’s local output.
Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping upload bandwidth headroom—20% is the recommended amount—and monitoring audio and video quality continuously. Network or ingest trouble may affect delivery, but it does not explain a playlist entry that FFmpeg never opened.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| An episode is absent from FFmpeg’s input log | Playlist contents, path, quoting and permissions | Correct the list or access issue, then rerun with visible logs. |
| FFmpeg opens every file, but playback jumps or timing drifts | Stream compatibility and each file’s duration | Compare probe results; test a duration override only when its value is known to be accurate. |
| Episodes differ in codecs, stream layout or time base | Whether stream copy is appropriate | Normalize and re-encode the inputs, or use a filter-based concat workflow. |
| Local output has all episodes, but YouTube playback does not | Output audio mapping, stream health, connection and encoder settings | Review -map, YouTube’s stream-health messages, upload headroom and encoder recommendations. |
| Only the final episode appears shortened | Its duration and how the output terminates | Inspect the log and output duration. There is no universal final-episode workaround established by the cited guidance. |
