Compare audience retention and watch-time metrics around the moment viewers actually saw the ad—not just the cuepoint timestamp. A post-break dip shows that viewing changed around that point; by itself, it does not prove the ad caused the change.
Which YouTube Studio metrics to check
After the stream ends, open the stream’s video-level analytics in YouTube Studio and review the audience-retention report under key moments. It shows how well different moments held viewers’ attention. YouTube says live-stream metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends, and the report can be downloaded as a CSV. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics.
- Total watch time: the total time the event was played across all views.
- Average view duration: the estimated average number of minutes watched per view.
- Average concurrent viewers: the average number of viewers watching at the same time. Use it as context for audience size, not as a substitute for accumulated watch time.
These metrics describe different things, so identify which one you are comparing. Also stick to one reporting surface throughout: YouTube notes that Analytics data is based on video ID and is processed and despammed, while Live Control Room measures different information.
Find when viewers actually saw the ad
Record both the cuepoint time and, if possible, the viewer-visible start and end of the interruption. They may not match: after an immediate cuepoint, ad content can take around 30 seconds to appear to viewers, while the broadcast remains visible during the delay. The YouTube Live Streaming API overview explains this timing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A cuepoint also does not mean every viewer received an ad. YouTube attempts to play one, but delivery depends on factors including ad availability and a viewer’s ad-viewing history; viewers who do not receive an ad continue seeing the broadcast. As YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation puts it: “Whether an ad plays depends on a variety of factors, such as ad availability and the viewer’s ad-viewing history.” A stream-wide retention change therefore mixes viewers who may have seen an ad with those who did not.
Compare watch time before and after the break
- Mark the event. Note the cuepoint, then locate the actual viewer-visible ad start and end using a timestamped recording or audience-facing monitor if available.
- Choose equal windows. Compare a pre-break interval and a post-break interval of the same length, using the retention curve and the relevant watch-time measures. You can also compare equivalent segments from similar streams.
- Keep the comparison like for like. Align the reporting surface, metric definition, window length, content segment, stream length, and audience size or trend as closely as possible. Note any change in pacing or subject matter near the break.
- Preserve your inputs. Save the exported report and event timestamps so you can repeat the comparison after YouTube has processed the data.
- State the finding carefully. Describe a decline as a post-break change or association unless your comparison design can support a causal conclusion. A single before-and-after curve cannot rule out an audience trend or a content change.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Standard Studio metrics can show whether retention or watch-time measures changed around an ad break. The official documentation described here does not establish a Studio report that isolates watch time caused or lost specifically because of the break, nor does it establish a complete viewer-level export linking ad receipt to each viewer’s later watch time. Do not treat a simple before-and-after change as the causal effect of an ad.

If you are comparing ad scheduling settings as well, note the conditions: YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts documentation, updated September 14, 2026 UTC, describes LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH automatic cuepoint modes as tradeoffs in earnings potential and viewer interruption. It also distinguishes concurrent from non-concurrent scheduling, which can affect cuepoint timing across viewers. These differences make the actual viewer-visible timing important when interpreting a comparison.
