How to Stream Prerecorded Lessons 24/7 on YouTube with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg can loop a prerecorded lesson into a YouTube Live broadcast: create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, copy its ingest URL and private stream key, then run FFmpeg with real-time pacing and an input loop. The loop repeats the file; it does not keep a failed process or network connection alive, so continuous streaming also requires monitoring and a recovery plan.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • A computer that can run FFmpeg continuously, a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity, and a lesson file with compatible audio and video.
  • Permission to broadcast every part of the recording, including music, graphics, and any third-party footage.

For a true 24/7 stream, the computer and connection must remain available. Test the full loop and upload before sharing the live link.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a broadcast or schedule one using YouTube’s current encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. The key is a credential: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public log, or shared document. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go live action when required. Follow the status shown there rather than assuming FFmpeg starting automatically makes a scheduled event public.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery; RTMPS sends RTMP over an SSL connection. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Prepare FFmpeg and start the loop

Install an FFmpeg build appropriate for your operating system and confirm its syntax against the FFmpeg documentation. Replace the example ingest URL and key below with the exact values from YouTube Studio. Do not paste a real key into material you plan to publish.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lesson.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -re reads the file at its natural playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -i lesson.mp4 selects the lesson file. Use its actual path if it is not in the current directory.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode video and audio in common live-stream formats. The example uses an illustrative video bitrate, not a universal recommendation.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame keyframe interval in this example. At 30 fps, that is two seconds; at another frame rate, change the values to match the intended interval.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS delivery.

Match encoder settings to the source and YouTube guidance

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 encoder support and frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using the official table for the selected codec and your source; do not treat the sample’s 4500k bitrate as suitable for every resolution or frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

The example uses H.264 and a 60-frame keyframe interval, which is two seconds only when the output is 30 fps. If your output is 60 fps, set a 120-frame interval for two seconds. Keep the configured bitrate within both YouTube’s applicable guidance and your connection’s sustained upload capacity.

Choose copying or transcoding deliberately

The example transcodes the video and audio. If the source codecs, timestamps, and stream layout already fit YouTube’s ingest requirements, -c copy may reduce CPU use, but it can be less forgiving when the source has incompatible codecs or irregular timestamps. Test the exact file and FFmpeg build before relying on stream copy for an unattended broadcast.

Keep a 24/7 broadcast running

The FFmpeg loop controls file playback, not service availability. A process can exit, a machine can restart, or an internet connection can fail. Supervise FFmpeg as a long-running process and arrange a tested way to detect failures and restart it, such as an operating-system service manager or a carefully tested wrapper. Watch both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health.

FFmpeg documents reconnect options for some protocols, but their availability and behavior are protocol-specific. They do not guarantee that YouTube resumes at the same point or that viewers will not see a gap. Check the relevant options for your installed FFmpeg version in the protocol documentation and test failure and recovery before depending on them.

Plan for replay, copyright, and monetization

A 24-hour stream may not produce a complete replay

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need a replay, keep a local recording as a backup and consider dividing programming into shorter broadcasts. Confirm how any breaks and restart boundaries appear to viewers. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Repeated material is not a monetization guarantee

YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content with little educational value may be ineligible for monetization. That does not mean every continuous loop of a creator’s own lesson is prohibited, but a 24/7 loop is not a shortcut to monetization or a guarantee of eligibility. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and ensure the broadcast provides original value.

Before going live, confirm you own or have permission to use the lesson, music, graphics, and other assets. A livestream can still create copyright or rights issues even when the video file plays correctly.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube shows no incoming stream Incorrect ingest URL or key, wrong broadcast selected, or encoder not connected. Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room event, check FFmpeg’s output, and keep the key private.
FFmpeg exits after the lesson ends The input loop option is missing, misplaced, or unsupported in the installed build. Confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before the input it applies to, check the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation, and test the file locally.
Video or audio is rejected or unstable Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, or source timestamps do not fit the ingest requirements. Compare the output against YouTube’s current encoder settings. Try transcoding rather than stream copy, and test with the actual source file.
The stream freezes or drops Upload capacity varies, the network disconnects, or FFmpeg or the host has stopped. Check sustained upload capacity, FFmpeg process status, host availability, and YouTube stream health. Use a tested supervisor and recovery procedure; a media loop alone will not reconnect a failed service.
The live broadcast has no complete archive The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated archive window or recording was otherwise incomplete. Keep a local recording if replay matters, and plan shorter broadcast segments when a complete YouTube archive is important.
