She said their contrasting temperaments created friction—and that being required to work together turned some of that tension into the chemistry audiences saw in Dirty Dancing. Her later tributes to Swayze were warm, complicating any claim that they simply hated each other.
Why Grey called them a difficult match
Grey’s clearest account came in connection with her 2022 memoir, Out of the Corner. In an interview with People, as reported by News24, she compared the actors’ working dynamic to the characters’ unlikely pairing: “The same way Baby and Johnny weren’t supposed to be together – they weren’t . . . a natural match, right? – we weren’t a natural match.” News24’s account of Grey’s remarks
Grey said she disliked aspects of Swayze’s behavior during their earlier work together on Red Dawn, including pranks and lateness, according to the same News24 report. Those are Grey’s retrospective recollections as reported by the outlet; they are not independently established production records. News24 on Grey’s memoir account
She also explained that the mismatch did not prevent them from working effectively. “And the fact we needed to be a natural match created a tension,” Grey said. Because they were “forced to be together,” she recalled, that tension became “a kind of a synergy, or like a friction.” The point is not that friction magically disappeared, but that an awkward personal fit and compelling performance could coexist. What their later comments add
Grey’s 2009 tribute
After Swayze died in 2009, Grey remembered him affectionately. “Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace,” she said in a statement reported by Us Weekly. She also recalled dancing together as young performers and “practicing the lift in the freezing lake, having a blast.” That warmth does not prove every day on set was easy; it does show why a lasting-feud narrative leaves out important context. Grey’s 2017 recollection
In a 2017 account, Grey described their differences as complementary: “His fearlessness with my fearfulness — it was like a marriage where you have two opposites.” The report also quotes her describing Swayze as strong and protective, and as someone invested in the film. These are later reflections, not evidence that their original working relationship was effortless. Grey’s 2017 comments

What Swayze’s famous-line story does—and does not—show
Swayze’s memoir, The Time of My Life, offers a separate glimpse of his response to the film’s material. As quoted in News24’s 2022 report, he resisted saying “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” because it sounded corny to him. He later wrote: “I could hardly bring myself to say it. It sounded so corny. But seeing the finished film, I had to admit it worked.” That is a creative hesitation about a line, not evidence of hostility toward Grey. News24 quoting Swayze’s memoir

The available accounts support an uneven professional relationship: Grey remembered a lack of natural compatibility and frustrations, while also describing a productive tension and later speaking warmly about Swayze. They do not establish an affair, a private romance, or a permanent feud. On-screen chemistry is not proof of off-screen romance, and a candid account of friction is not proof that two colleagues hated one another.
