They arrive in Riley’s Headquarters as she enters her teenage years, each giving a different shape to the worries and social pressures she faces.
Who are the four new Emotions?
Pixar identifies Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui as the sequel’s new characters. Riley is navigating new friends, tryouts, puberty, and high school, and those changes give the four a place in the story.
Anxiety
Anxiety looks ahead, anticipating possible problems and trying to prepare Riley for what might happen. Maya Hawke voices the character. Hawke said she drew on the everyday worried voice in her own head—the one concerned about wearing the wrong shoes, being late, or saying the wrong thing—in shaping her performance. Pixar’s character guide and Hawke’s interview with Disney describe the character and performance.
Envy
Envy is small and keenly focused on what other people have, especially the newest or coolest things. In everyday terms, she represents wanting something because someone else has it—and noticing what Riley feels she is missing.

Embarrassment
Despite his large build, Embarrassment is shy and quiet. He reacts when Riley encounters social awkwardness, representing the self-consciousness that comes with wondering how other people see you.
Ennui
Ennui is bored and lethargic, with a practiced eye-roll. She can operate Headquarters remotely through her phone. The word ennui means a feeling of boredom or weariness; film consultant Dacher Keltner described the film’s gloss as “what you would call, the boredom” in a 2024 TIME interview.

Why do these emotions appear in Riley’s teenage years?
The sequel uses adolescence as the setting for a story about a changing world and a changing sense of self. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter explained that the first film narrowed a much larger emotional world to a small set of characters, while the sequel let its filmmakers introduce emotions they had not used before. He described the new concepts as more abstract than the original characters, so the team worked to make them visually clear. Docter’s interview with Disney discusses that creative challenge.
The timing is a storytelling choice, not a claim that children never feel these emotions. Docter put it this way: “Obviously, younger kids do feel things like embarrassment and envy, but I think our cheat that they only show up in later life works okay, given how loud they feel in our teenage years.”

Are the new characters a scientific guide to emotion?
No. They are story characters that offer recognizable ways to think about parts of Riley’s experience, not a complete scientific taxonomy or a clinical guide. TIME reported that Berkeley professor Dacher Keltner, psychologist Paul Ekman, and psychologist Lisa Damour were among the consultants connected to the films. Their involvement does not make every creative choice in the story a scientific consensus.
