Romy and Jacob reconcile after Jacob learns about her affair with Samuel. Samuel leaves, and the closing image of him with the dog is Romy’s fantasy—not evidence that she chooses Samuel or reunites with him. The ending brings Romy back to her marriage without claiming that the affair is erased or that the marriage is permanently repaired.
Does Romy end up with Jacob or Samuel?
Romy ends the film with Jacob, her husband. After the affair is exposed, the three characters meet in a closing confrontation. Samuel then leaves, and Romy and Jacob reconnect. The film does not show Romy choosing Samuel as a partner or continuing a relationship with him.

That is the literal outcome; the final image adds an important distinction between what happens and what Romy imagines. Director Halina Reijn describes the image of Samuel and the dog as a fantasy. Her explanation supports reading the ending as Romy returning to Jacob while still acknowledging her desire, rather than secretly ending up with Samuel.
What does the final dog scene mean?
The closing image recalls the motel room where Romy and Samuel first met. Reijn says, “Romy sees Samuel with the dog, and that is, of course, a fantasy,” and adds, “For me, the dog also symbolizes herself in her fantasy.” The image therefore belongs to Romy’s inner experience; it is not a literal reunion or a sign that Samuel remains in her life.

Reijn also says that the fantasy is “not a lack of trust.” That is her interpretation of how desire can coexist with intimacy in a long-term relationship, not proof that every viewer must read Romy and Jacob’s renewed connection in the same way. The film leaves room for the tension: Romy is with Jacob, while her imagination still includes Samuel.
Is Romy and Jacob’s marriage fixed?
No lasting repair is guaranteed. The couple reconciles in the ending, but the film does not establish that one confrontation resolves the betrayal, answers every question in their marriage, or ensures that they will remain together. Reijn calls the film a fable and a comedy of manners, and says, “I don’t see it as a Walt Disney ending.” The ending is hopeful in that Romy and Jacob reconnect, but deliberately less conclusive than a promise of happily ever after.

What happens to Samuel?
Samuel leaves the couple after the confrontation. Reijn describes his departure as giving Romy and Jacob back to their marriage. The film’s final fantasy revisits him, but does not undo that departure or indicate that he and Romy resume their affair.
Why is their relationship more than a simple affair?
Romy is the CEO of the company where Samuel is an intern. Their private encounters complicate who seems to hold control, but the workplace hierarchy gives the relationship professional stakes as well as personal ones. The Associated Press review notes that Samuel’s control grows and that he threatens to call HR. Neither the apparent power dynamic in an intimate scene nor Romy’s senior position at work, by itself, captures all the leverage each person may have.

Reijn connects Romy’s risky choices to suppressed desire, saying, “Romy has to learn to accept that part of herself. Because when you suppress it, you will start to do things that are risky, like having affairs.” This is the director’s framing of Romy’s story, not a general rule about people or relationships.

- Shown on screen: Romy and Jacob reconcile, and Samuel leaves.
- Explained by Reijn: the image of Samuel with the dog is Romy’s fantasy, and the dog symbolizes Romy within it.
- Not settled: whether the marriage will last or how the couple will work through the consequences of the affair.
The best-supported reading is a reconciliation that does not erase Romy’s desire or settle the couple’s future. The film ends with her returning to Jacob, not with a definitive guarantee that their relationship has been healed.
