My Hero Academia strongly implies that Deku and Ochaco want to pursue a relationship, but its final manga epilogue does not explicitly say they are dating. Their mutual wish to spend more time together—and the chapter’s closing image of them holding hands—makes the romantic direction clear while leaving the precise label to readers.
Where the romance is addressed
The key scene appears in Chapter 431, “More,” an additional epilogue included in My Hero Academia Volume 42, the manga’s final volume. It takes place after the time skip shown in the original ending, so it is important to distinguish the original conclusion from the later-added chapter that offers this further moment between Deku and Ochaco. ComicBook.com’s account of Chapter 431 describes the scene; readers can find the chapter in Volume 42.

What Chapter 431 shows
At a gathering with their former classmates, Ochaco reflects that she wishes she had talked more with Deku. He calls to her and says he wants to spend more time with her going forward. Ochaco agrees, and the chapter ends with the two holding hands.
The sequence signals mutual romantic interest. However, the reporting describes Deku’s exact words as omitted and the romance as implied, rather than presenting a direct, explicit declaration that they are a couple. The evidence supports saying that they appear to choose a closer relationship—not that the chapter formally confirms they are dating.
#1 Best Overall
- Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn't got an ounce of power in him
- What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”
- Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study
What Horikoshi reportedly said about their status
A May 7, 2025 ComicBook.com report says that the fanbook My Hero Academia: Ultra Age asked whether Ochaco finally confessed her feelings and whether the pair ended up together. The outlet attributes this response to Kohei Horikoshi: “Please read Volume 42 of the manga and use your own imagination for that answer.”
That answer directs readers back to the epilogue rather than giving a definitive verbal status update. Since the quote is reported secondhand here, it should be understood as ComicBook.com’s attribution, not as a romance statement independently verified against the fanbook.
Rank #2
- MHA Fandom: Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.
- Includes: The first 20 volumes of the bestselling My Hero Academia manga.
- Format: Softcover, 3840 pages.
How to read the ending’s ambiguity
- What the chapter depicts: Deku wants to spend more time with Ochaco, she agrees, and they hold hands.
- What the scene strongly suggests: Their interest is mutual and romantic.
- What it does not explicitly establish: A spoken announcement or formal label that they are dating.
So the most accurate answer to “Did Deku and Ochaco end up together?” is that the epilogue strongly implies they intend to pursue a relationship, while leaving readers to infer exactly what that means for them.
Creator context—and what it does not prove
In a VIZ Media interview published July 22, 2024, Horikoshi reflected on the importance of support from people close to him: “But as I entered my 30s, I began to appreciate those people nearby who offer support, which ties into the current story of My Hero Academia.” That comment speaks to the series’ themes; it does not confirm Deku and Ochaco’s relationship.
Rank #3
The same interview discussed the series reaching 100 million copies in circulation worldwide at that time. That is a milestone mentioned in the 2024 interview, not a current circulation total.

Volume 42 is the physical volume reported to contain Chapter 431, “More,” and is the most direct way to read the full scene. The volume offers the chapter itself; it does not replace the story’s suggestive ending with a more explicit label for the relationship. VIZ also promotes My Hero Academia manga box sets for readers building a broader collection.
