Third-party troubleshooting coverage commonly links Disney+ error 38 to an incorrect or unsynchronized device clock. However, Disney’s current U.S. error-code index does not visibly list a dedicated explanation for code 38, so treat the clock issue as the leading diagnosis—not a confirmed, universal definition.
What does Disney+ error code 38 mean?
Error 38 is generally reported as a playback or synchronization problem. The most commonly cited trigger is a device clock or time zone that is wrong or out of sync. A third-party troubleshooting article makes that connection, but Disney’s public U.S. error-code index does not currently show a dedicated code-38 article. Disney therefore does not publicly confirm, in that index, that every instance of error 38 has the same cause.
The number alone may not identify the problem reliably: error labels can differ by device, app version, or region, and a manufacturer may display its own code. Read the full message on screen. If the wording or number differs, troubleshoot the message actually shown rather than assuming it is code 38.
Why try the clock first? Correct date, time, and time zone settings can matter to authentication and protected video playback. Third-party coverage specifically associates error 38 with those settings, making them a quick, low-impact first check: 101help’s troubleshooting coverage.

Try this quick fix first
- Open your device’s date-and-time settings.
- Turn on automatic date and time, network-provided time, or the closest equivalent.
- Turn on automatic time zone, or select the time zone where you are located.
- Restart the device, then fully close and reopen Disney+.
- Try the video again.
If automatic time cannot be enabled, check whether a device restriction, administrator setting, or location-services setting is preventing the change. Menu labels vary by model and software version.
Find the time setting on your device
Android phone or tablet
Open Settings, then look under System, General management, or Date & time. Enable Automatic date & time and Automatic time zone if available. The exact path and wording vary by manufacturer.
iPhone or iPad
Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Check that the displayed time zone is correct. If the control is unavailable, a restriction, network issue, or device-management policy may be limiting the setting.
Apple TV
Open Settings > General > Date and Time. Enable automatic time settings or confirm the correct time zone, then restart Apple TV and reopen Disney+.

Confirm the computer’s clock and time zone are correct and automatic synchronization is enabled. Update the browser as well. Disney’s streaming troubleshooting guidance also says computer playback requires JavaScript and cookies to be enabled.
If the clock fix does not work
Work through these checks in order. They help distinguish a one-device app issue from a broader connection or service problem without starting with disruptive steps.
- Fully close Disney+ and restart the device. Returning to the home screen may leave the app running. Use the device’s force-close option if available, then restart it.
- Try another title. If only one program fails, the problem may be specific to that title or its playback availability.
- Compare devices and apps. Try Disney+ on another supported device on the same network, then try another streaming app on the affected device.
- Update the app and device software. Check for Disney+ updates and operating-system, TV-firmware, or streaming-device updates. Updating may address a playback or compatibility problem, though it is not a code-38-specific fix.
- Clear app cache or site data where available. See the device notes below.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, or filtering. Test on a normal supported connection; do not use a VPN to bypass regional availability restrictions.
- Reinstall Disney+. This can replace damaged app files, but you may need to sign in again.
- Power-cycle the device and network equipment. Use the sequence below if the earlier checks do not help.
Disney recommends checking device support and software updates, restarting the app, clearing cache or data where available, reinstalling, improving the connection, and power-cycling equipment in its general streaming troubleshooting guide.
Clear Disney+ cache or browser data
Try this when playback fails on only one device, the app freezes or loops, or restarting has not helped. Cache-clearing options depend on the platform.
- Android: Open Settings > Apps > Disney+ > Storage, then choose Clear cache. Clearing data may sign you out and remove local app settings.
- Fire TV: Look under Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Disney+ > Clear cache. Labels can vary.
- Roku: Roku generally does not offer a conventional per-app cache button. Restarting the device or removing and reinstalling the Disney+ channel is the practical alternative.
- Apple TV and many smart TVs: Restarting or reinstalling the app may be the available equivalent.
- Browser: Clear site data for Disneyplus.com if possible, rather than deleting all browser history.
Check whether the network is involved
Run a few comparisons before changing network settings. Disney lists slow or unstable internet, distance from the router, network congestion, ISP problems, and unusually high demand among possible streaming issues. Its connection guidance recommends a speed test, reducing congestion, moving closer to the router, using Ethernet where possible, and power-cycling network equipment.

A speed test can show whether the connection is slow, but one reading does not establish that the network caused error 38. Third-party coverage commonly cites roughly 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K; treat those as commonly cited figures, not as a verified current Disney requirement or a code-38 threshold.
| Test result | What it points toward |
|---|---|
| One Disney+ title fails, but others play | A title-specific or catalog/playback issue. |
| Disney+ fails on one device only | That device’s app, cache, firmware, or compatibility. |
| Disney+ fails on every device at home | The home network, ISP, account, regional availability, or a Disney-side issue. |
| Other streaming apps also fail | A general device or network problem. |
| Disney+ works over a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | The home network path is more likely; this does not by itself prove the ISP is at fault. |
| Disney+ works on other devices but not the TV | The TV app, firmware, compatibility, or an external-display connection. |
Power-cycle the network correctly
- Turn off or unplug the modem and router. If they are one combined unit, power off that unit.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Turn the modem back on and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn the router back on if it is separate, then restart the streaming device.
- Open Disney+ and test playback.
If you use a VPN, proxy, Smart DNS, corporate or school filtering, or a privacy relay, temporarily disable it for the test. Such services can cause location or authorization problems; that does not establish them as the cause of error 38.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor browser playback, check the browser too
- Try a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block ads, scripts, tracking, or network traffic.
- Confirm JavaScript and cookies are enabled.
- Install browser updates, then test another supported browser.
- Clear Disneyplus.com site data if the problem persists.
These checks align with Disney’s browser and streaming troubleshooting guidance.
If playback uses an HDMI-connected screen
HDMI and HDCP are worth checking when Disney+ works on a device’s own screen but fails on a connected television or monitor. They are an edge case, not the usual reported explanation for code 38.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable.
- Try a different HDMI port or certified cable.
- Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, HDMI switch, or capture device.
- Test the TV’s built-in Disney+ app, if available.
- Check whether the failure occurs only with 4K or HDR content.
Disney says connected components should support high-bandwidth digital content and identifies HDCP 2.2 support for external displays used with 4K Ultra HD and HDR playback in its streaming guidance.

Check your Disney+ account if the message suggests access trouble
If the displayed wording points to authorization or access—or the clock, app, and network checks have not helped—sign out and back in, confirm the subscription is active, and try another profile, title, or supported device. Check any stated device-use or plan limits rather than assuming a playback code identifies an account problem.

Disney documents some codes separately. For example, its error 39 page discusses authorization and content-access possibilities. That is a reason to follow the exact displayed code and message, not to treat code 39 as an explanation for code 38.
When to contact Disney+ support
Contact Disney+ if automatic time settings and the relevant device, app, and network checks do not resolve playback—especially if the problem follows your account across devices or networks, affects multiple titles, or the screen shows a different or unexplained message. Disney’s streaming guidance directs users who still have problems to support; available assistance can vary by region.
Have these details ready:
- The exact error number and full wording shown.
- Your device model and, if visible, operating-system and Disney+ app versions.
- Whether one title or all titles are affected.
- Whether Disney+ works on another device or over a hotspot.
- When the problem began and what troubleshooting you have tried.
Reach support through Disney’s official Help Center. Do not trust phone numbers copied from unrelated sites or search snippets, and never share your password, full payment-card number, or one-time authentication code.
