If Google, YouTube, email, or other apps work but Netflix will not open, sign in, or stream, your device can reach some internet services—not necessarily Netflix. The cause may be a Netflix outage, damaged app data, an expired sign-in session, VPN or DNS filtering, router or ISP routing, or an unsupported device.
Start by testing Netflix on another device on the same Wi‑Fi, then try netflix.com/clearcookies in a browser and, if possible, cellular data. Those tests show whether the fault follows the device, home network, account, or service.
First check whether Netflix itself is down
Open Netflix’s official service-status page. Also test Netflix on a second device and, if available, on cellular data. If it fails across several devices and independent networks, stop changing local settings and contact Netflix or wait for the service problem to clear. Third-party outage sites show user reports, not proof of the cause.
A generic “internet is working” result does not prove that Netflix’s servers are reachable, DNS for Netflix resolves correctly, your account session is valid, your network address is accepted, or your device still meets Netflix’s software requirements. Netflix identifies device data, network connectivity, and unsupported devices as separate causes of connection errors: Netflix error guidance.

Use three tests to isolate the problem
- Same Wi‑Fi, different device: sign in to Netflix on a phone, tablet, or computer connected to the affected network.
- Browser test: visit https://www.netflix.com/clearcookies, select Sign In, and authenticate. If it returns NSEZ-403, Netflix says it cannot connect the account to the service at that time; try again later. If the browser works, the television or app is the more likely problem. See Netflix’s browser troubleshooting.
- Different network: try cellular data or another trusted Wi‑Fi network. Working on cellular but not home Wi‑Fi points toward the router, ISP, DNS, VPN, proxy, filtering, or home IP address.
| Test result | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fails on every device and network | Service, account, or widespread outage | Check official status and contact Netflix |
| Works on cellular but not home Wi‑Fi | Router, ISP, DNS, VPN, proxy, filtering, or IP configuration | Restore defaults, reboot network, then contact ISP |
| Works on another device on the same Wi‑Fi | Affected device or app | Restart, sign out, update, reinstall, or clear app data |
| Browser works but TV app fails | App, firmware, or device compatibility | Update, reinstall, reset the app, and check support |
| Other apps also fail on the device | Device’s network connection | Reconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet and run its network test |
| Fast.com is consistently slow for all devices | Wi‑Fi or ISP performance | Test Ethernet if possible and contact the ISP |
| UI-113 with SDK 4.1.5 or below | Unsupported software in that workflow | Use a supported device; a factory reset will not add compatibility |
| Only a hotel, school, work, or café network fails | Captive portal or network policy | Complete browser sign-in or ask the network administrator |
Fix Netflix in the least-destructive order
1. Force-close Netflix
Use the device’s app switcher or app-management screen to close Netflix completely, then reopen it. On iPhone or iPad, open the App Switcher, swipe up on Netflix, and reopen it; gestures vary by model and iOS version. The documented workflow is at Netflix Help.
2. Restart the affected device
Turn a TV or streaming player fully off, unplug it for at least 15 seconds, then power it on. Some models require pressing the power button once while unplugged and waiting one minute, or remaining unplugged for three minutes. Timing and controls vary by device: Netflix device guidance.
3. Sign out and sign back in
On many TV and streaming versions, open Netflix, press Back, choose the profile icon or Get Help, select Sign out, confirm, and authenticate again. If those choices are missing, Netflix documents this fallback remote sequence: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. Choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate if shown; interfaces differ.
On Android, iPhone, and iPad, use My Netflix → profile name → Sign Out, then sign in again: Netflix mobile instructions.
4. Restart the modem and router
- Turn off the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds.
- Plug in the modem and wait for its lights to stabilize.
- Plug in a separate router and wait about one minute after reconnection.
- Turn on the device and retry Netflix.
Wi‑Fi may disappear temporarily during this process. Netflix’s network procedure is documented at Netflix Help.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
5. Restore altered network settings
Temporarily disable VPN apps and profiles, proxies, Smart DNS, custom DNS, router-level VPNs, ad-blocking DNS, parental controls, and security filters. Netflix explicitly lists VPN, proxy, custom DNS, and custom modem settings as connection variables: connection troubleshooting. Restore automatic or default DNS as a diagnostic step rather than permanently changing providers. Turning off a VPN may change the catalog available in your location; it is not a method for bypassing regional or household rules.
On public Wi‑Fi, open a browser and complete any hotel, school, workplace, café, or guest-network sign-in page. Such networks may restrict video services: Netflix public-network guidance.
6. Update everything
Update Netflix from the official app store and update the TV, streaming player, phone, tablet, console, or browser operating system. An up-to-date app cannot compensate for firmware that is too old.

These numbers apply to that UI-113 check, not every device: UI-113 guidance.
7. Reinstall Netflix
Delete or uninstall Netflix, restart if the platform recommends it, reinstall it from the official store, and sign in. On Apple TV, highlight Netflix, press and hold the center of the remote touch surface or clickpad ring, press Play/Pause, choose Delete, then reinstall it from the App Store. 8. Clear Android app storage
On Android, press and hold the Netflix icon, choose App info → Storage & cache → Clear storage → OK, then reopen Netflix and sign in. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. This signs you out and removes downloaded shows and movies, so do it only after confirming you know the account password: Android instructions.
9. Reset network settings only when appropriate
On iPhone or iPad, a network-settings reset can help after simpler steps fail, but it removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and other network configuration. Use the current iOS Settings path for your model and be prepared to reconnect every network.

Open Fast.com, which Netflix provides for testing speed and connection directly to Netflix. A high result does not validate app data, authentication, DNS, compatibility, or service status; a low result across several devices supports a Wi‑Fi or ISP diagnosis. Netflix’s current speed recommendations are at its help page and can vary by quality, device, and region.
Device-specific checks
Smart TVs and streaming players
- Run the television or player’s built-in network test.
- Use a full power-off rather than standby.
- Update TV firmware and the Netflix app.
- Use Netflix’s Get Help menu to sign out or reset.
- Reinstall the app where the platform permits it.
- Check whether the TV is too old for the current Netflix app.
- Test a separate supported streaming player before replacing the television.
Network menus are model-specific; Netflix directs users to the device manual or manufacturer when its general steps do not apply: Netflix network troubleshooting.
Android phones and tablets
Force-close, restart, sign out, update Android and Netflix, try Netflix in a browser, compare Wi‑Fi with cellular, and clear storage only after noting the download loss.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common error messages mean
- NSEZ-403: during the clear-cookies browser workflow, Netflix cannot connect the account to the service at that time. Retry later and test another device or network.
- UI-113: may indicate device data, network conditions, or unsupported software. In Netflix’s documented SDK check, 4.1.5 or below is not upgradeable to the latest requirements.
- “Unable to connect” or “Network error”: use the device-versus-network tests rather than assuming the entire internet is down.
- VPN, proxy, or unblocker message: turn off those services and restore default DNS or proxy settings.
- Household, billing, sharing, or regional message: follow that exact message. It is not necessarily a connectivity failure.
When to contact your ISP

“Netflix fails on [one/all] devices on my network. It works/does not work on cellular or another network. The affected device uses Wi‑Fi/Ethernet. Fast.com shows [result]. Please check for an outage, routing issue, DNS problem, or modem/router configuration issue.”
Netflix specifically asks for whether one or multiple devices are affected and whether the connection is Wi‑Fi or wired: Netflix ISP troubleshooting.
When replacing hardware is justified
Consider a separate streaming player only after Netflix works on another supported device using the same network, the old device cannot update or is officially unsupported, and restarting or reinstalling has failed. A factory reset cannot make unsupported hardware compatible. Buying a premium router will not fix a damaged app, account problem, outage, or VPN block; first test the TV near the router or over Ethernet.
For current device availability, use manufacturer pages such as Roku players, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV Streamer, or Apple TV 4K. Model support, pricing, and availability vary by country and date.
