How to Add Videos From Your Camera Roll to TikTok

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To upload a video saved on your phone, open TikTok, tap Add post (+), choose Upload, select the video, then tap Next to edit it. Tap Next again to set your caption and post options; choose Post to publish or Drafts to save it privately. Button names and placement can vary with app version, device, account, and region.

Upload a camera-roll video to TikTok

  1. Open TikTok and tap Add post (+) at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Upload or the gallery thumbnail control, then choose a video from your device.
  3. If multi-select is available, choose any additional clips or photos. Tap Next.
  4. Trim or arrange the media, then add any sound, text, stickers, effects, filters, or captions you want.
  5. Tap Next to open the post screen. Choose a cover, write a caption, set your audience and interaction options, then tap Post or Drafts.

TikTok’s upload instructions describe adding a photo or video from a device; its editing and posting help covers editing tools and drafts.

Upload and arrange multiple clips

If TikTok shows a multi-select control, select clips in the order you want them to appear. In the editor, reorder and trim clips individually if those controls are available. Check transitions and play the full preview before continuing: it is easy to include a duplicate clip or accidentally create a photo slideshow. If you cannot select multiple items, combine the clips in a video editor and import the finished file as one video.

Edit the video before posting

The available tools depend on the app and the video, but TikTok’s editor can offer trimming, splitting, rearranging clips, sounds, text, stickers, emojis, filters, effects, and captions. Use text timing controls where available so on-screen words appear for the intended portion of the video. If you add a TikTok sound to a clip that already has audio, check the original and added-sound volume controls and listen to the full preview.

Liphisy 64” Tripod for Cell Phone & Camera with Remote and Phone Holder
  • 【Sturdy and Stable】: Made of premium aluminum alloy and stainless steel, Liphisy phone tripod with remote keeps your device stay securely in place for still shots and video recording.
  • 【Multi-angle Shot】: With a max height of 64”, this tripod stand with a 210-degree rotation head and 360-degree rotation holder allows you to capture shots from any angle, catering to different photography needs.
  • 【Wireless Remote Included】: Package includes a wireless remote that connects to your cell phone easily, making it a breeze to snap photos or video recordings.
  • 【Height Adjustable】: The height of this cell phone tripod with remote can be adjusted from 17” to 64” and the easy lock mechanism makes it really easy to set up. It gives you an excellent vantage point for capturing photos and videos.
  • 【Wide Application】: Compatable with different phone and camera, this tripod is great for photography and video recording, perfect for travel and home use.

Use TikTok’s editor for quick adjustments. A separate editor is useful when you need detailed timing, multiple audio tracks, precise subtitles, or a reusable master file for several platforms; it gives you more workflow control, not a guaranteed reach advantage.

Choose a cover and set post options

On the post screen, tap Select cover on the video thumbnail, drag the selector to a clear frame, and tap Save. Choose a frame where the subject is easy to recognize at thumbnail size. Avoid blurry transitions and keep important text away from the edges. Choose the cover before publishing rather than assuming you can replace it later.

Add a caption and any relevant hashtags, mentions, or location. Check who can watch the post and whether comments, Duet, Stitch, or other reuse options are enabled. Preview once more to catch cropped faces, obscured text, or an audio mix that is too quiet.

Post it as a Story instead

  1. Tap Add post (+), then choose Story beneath the recording control.
  2. Tap Upload and select a video or photo.
  3. Add any available sound, filters, text, stickers, and Story settings, then tap Your Story.

TikTok says Stories are available for 24 hours and may be viewed from a profile, inbox, and certain feeds; visibility and replies depend on account settings. A regular post is not temporary in this way, while a draft remains private until you publish it. See TikTok’s Story instructions for details.

Save a draft without risking the original

Tap Drafts on the post screen to keep an unfinished post private in TikTok. Drafts are not a dependable backup: TikTok warns that they may be lost if the app is uninstalled and reinstalled or the account is moved or switched to another device, and drafts cannot be transferred between accounts. Keep the original in your camera roll. If you want a finished copy on your device, look for Save to device under More options on the post screen, or use the save control while editing if it appears. TikTok documents these options in its editing and posting help and video-download guidance.

Fix a missing video or failed upload

If the video does not appear in TikTok’s gallery, or cannot be selected, work through these checks:

  1. Open the video in your phone’s gallery and confirm it plays from start to finish.
  2. Download it to the device if it is only in cloud storage. Wait for any upload or processing in Photos, Google Photos, or another gallery app to finish.
  3. Check the phone’s app settings and allow TikTok the required access to photos and videos. On iPhone, confirm whether access is limited to selected items; on Android, check the Photos and videos permission. Menu names vary by operating-system release.
  4. Close and reopen TikTok. If the gallery is still incomplete, restart the phone and check for TikTok and operating-system updates.
  5. Check available device storage and confirm you are viewing the right album or media category.
  6. If the file still will not import, export a fresh copy in a common MP4/H.264 format using a reputable editor, then try a short test clip.

If TikTok’s permission prompt or media gallery behaves unexpectedly, its TikTok Studio help also describes the camera, microphone, photo, and video access the Studio app may request when those features are first used. If a short test file also fails, the problem may be app-side rather than the original video; try again later or use the web uploader below.

Keep quality, framing, and sound in mind

TikTok may resize, crop, or re-encode an upload, so do not assume the posted version will preserve the camera-roll file exactly. Start with the original rather than a copy downloaded from another platform, avoid repeated exports through multiple apps, and use a vertical frame when you want the usual full-screen presentation. Black bars are a creative choice, not a requirement. After publishing, check the video to make sure important details remain visible and the image and sound look right. Keep the source file until you have verified the post.

Audio already embedded in the video is different from a sound added in TikTok. A song in the source file can be muted, restricted, or removed if its use is not permitted; turning down the added sound does not grant rights to music embedded in the original. For a post promoting a brand, product, or service, TikTok recommends its Commercial Music Library for music cleared for that context. If you use music from elsewhere, make sure you have the necessary rights for the use and territory.

Upload from a computer with TikTok Studio

If the video is already on your computer or the mobile app cannot see it, sign in to TikTok Studio in a browser and choose Upload. TikTok’s documented web uploader accepts MP4 or WebM, requires at least 720×1280 resolution, supports videos up to 30 minutes, and lists a file-size limit of less than 10 GB. These are requirements for that web uploader, not universal limits for mobile uploads; features may also vary by region and product. A browser workflow can help with file management and review, but it may not include every mobile editing feature. TikTok’s Studio overview explains its app and creator tools.

Protect yourself from copyright and disclosure problems

Only upload footage and audio you created or have permission to use. Credit alone does not establish permission, and a song bought or streamed for personal listening is not automatically cleared for commercial use. TikTok’s copyright policy prohibits infringing content; exceptions vary by country and circumstance, so this is not legal advice.

If a post promotes a brand, product, or service, turn on TikTok’s commercial-content disclosure setting. The platform describes this requirement in its disclosure guidance and branded-content instructions. Legal disclosure duties can also vary by jurisdiction.
