On November 16, 2017, YouTube TV arrived as a dedicated app on select LG and Samsung smart TVs. The contemporary report described support for some 2016 and 2017 models—not every set from those years. Google’s current compatibility guidance starts at 2017 for both brands, so the 2017 announcement should not be treated as today’s model list.
What the 2017 rollout included
The rollout gave viewers a way to open YouTube TV from a compatible television’s app platform instead of relying on a phone, computer, Chromecast, or other streaming hardware. A November 16, 2017 report said the app was available on select 2016 and 2017 LG and Samsung smart TVs. It did not provide a complete list of model numbers, so the year alone was never a guarantee of compatibility. The contemporary report also described 2014 and 2015 LG and Samsung sets, Sony Linux TVs, and Apple TV as expected future additions; that was an expectation at the time, not confirmation that every listed platform ultimately received support.
How to install the app
The exact labels can vary with TV model and software, but Google’s current setup instructions use these paths:
Samsung smart TV
- Press the Home button on the remote and select Apps.
- Find YouTube TV in the recommended apps or search for that exact name.
- Install it, then add it to the home screen if you want a shortcut.
LG smart TV
- Press the Home button and open the LG Content Store.
- Search for YouTube TV.
- Download the app, then add it to the home screen if desired.
These are also the basic paths reported in 2017: Samsung’s Apps section or LG’s Content Store, followed by a search for YouTube TV. If the app is not accessible, Google recommends checking for a TV firmware update. Updating can address software issues, but it cannot make an unsupported model compatible. Google’s TV setup and casting guide has the current instructions.

YouTube TV is not the regular YouTube app
Search for YouTube TV separately in the app store. The standard YouTube app is primarily for creator videos, music, and other YouTube content; YouTube TV is a paid live-TV streaming service. Google describes the current main plan as including more than 100 broadcast, cable, and regional sports networks, live sports, unlimited DVR storage, up to six accounts per subscription, and up to three simultaneous devices. Those are current service details, not a description of what the 2017 launch included. Google’s service overview explains the current offering.
Is a particular LG or Samsung TV supported now?
Google’s current supported-device list says select LG and Samsung smart TVs from 2017 onward are compatible. That differs from the 2017 report’s mention of some 2016 models; an older television cited at launch may no longer qualify under the current guidance. Even for a 2017-or-newer set, support depends on the specific model and platform. Check the TV’s app store and Google’s supported-device list rather than assuming compatibility from the brand or year alone. Google reserves the right to withdraw support for a device.

- Find the TV’s exact model number and model year in its settings or on its label.
- Install any available TV firmware update.
- Reopen the app store and search specifically for YouTube TV, not just “YouTube.”
- Check that the TV’s country or region setting is appropriate for the service.
- Restart the TV and router, then search again.
- Compare the model with Google’s current supported-device list. If the app remains unavailable, use a supported alternative below.
Ways to watch on an unsupported TV
Cast from a phone or computer
You can cast YouTube TV to compatible Chromecast hardware or a TV with Chromecast built in. AirPlay is another option with compatible Apple TV or television hardware. Casting is not the same as running the native app: the phone or computer remains part of playback and control, and the devices generally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. See Google’s setup and casting instructions.
Connect a streaming device or game console
Google lists Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV and Android TV devices, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, TiVo Stream 4K, and Xfinity Flex among supported options, with platform-specific limitations. A device you already own may solve the problem without replacing the television. A new streamer needs an available HDMI port and power; using one adds hardware and may mean using a second remote. Check Google’s supported-device list for current platform details.

Choose between the TV app and an external device
| Option | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Native TV app | The exact TV model is supported and you want to use its existing remote and interface. | Availability depends on model, region, firmware, and app-platform support; older TV hardware may receive updates less often. |
| External streaming device | The TV is unsupported, or you want a platform that can be replaced independently of the television. | Requires compatible hardware, an HDMI port, and power; it adds a device and may introduce HDMI, HDCP, or audio compatibility issues. |
| Casting | You already have compatible casting hardware and prefer to use a phone or computer to start and control playback. | The mobile device or computer remains part of the viewing process, and both devices generally need the same Wi-Fi network. |
Picture and sound depend on more than installation
Installing YouTube TV does not by itself guarantee 4K, HDR, surround sound, or every channel. Google’s current 4K Plus guidance lists 2019-or-newer LG and Samsung 4K smart TVs among compatible devices, and 4K is limited to select content and hardware. Its 5.1 audio guidance identifies compatible LG and Samsung devices running Cobalt 20 or later, but the program and the rest of the audio system also matter. See Google’s 4K Plus device guidance and 5.1 audio support details.
The TV app is an access method, not a free version of the service. Google’s sign-up help page listed the main plan at $82.99 plus tax per month when reviewed; subscription pricing can change. Check the current sign-up page for the latest terms.
