Spotify retired Car View, its simplified in-app driving interface, in 2021. It later tested a separate feature called Car Mode, but that test does not establish that Spotify launched a permanent, universally available replacement. Spotify’s current guidance points drivers to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, AUX or USB, Spotify Connect, and compatible built-in vehicle apps.
What was Spotify Car View?
Car View was a simplified interface in Spotify’s Android app intended to make playback controls easier to use in a car. Some users valued its larger, driving-oriented controls and persistent screen. It was still a phone interface, however—not a guarantee of safe or legally permitted phone use while driving.
Spotify Community discussion about the missing feature describes how users relied on it for simpler playback controls. Spotify Community: “Car View missing”.
When did Spotify retire Car View?
- October 20, 2021: A Spotify Community moderator confirmed that Spotify was retiring Car View and said the company was exploring new ways to improve the in-car listening experience.
- December 12, 2021: A later moderator response in the same discussion reiterated the retirement and the exploration of new in-car experiences.
- March 25, 2022: Spotify confirmed it was testing a separate Car Mode interface with some users.
The retirement and the later test were not a same-day handoff to a finished replacement. The 2021 statement suggested interim options including hands-free Google Assistant, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Spotify Community discussion; TechCrunch’s report on the Car Mode test.

Why did Spotify remove Car View?
Spotify’s public explanation was broad: it said the retirement would make way for new innovations and that it was exploring other ways to improve listening in the car. The statement did not identify a specific technical fault, usage figure, legal concern, or commercial motive, so those should not be treated as established reasons.
Did Car Mode replace Car View?
Not in any confirmed one-for-one, universally available sense. In March 2022, Spotify described Car Mode as a test involving some users. The reported interface was designed for driving-oriented interaction and voice controls, but Spotify said it was gathering feedback and that the final version could change before any broader release. That supports calling Car Mode an experimental successor concept—not a proven permanent replacement. TechCrunch’s report.

Spotify also says users may see different app experiences because it tests features. A feature appearing for one account does not demonstrate that it is available to everyone. Spotify: Why has the app changed?
Car View, Car Mode, Car Thing, and car integrations are different

Why Car Thing is not the answer
Car Thing was a physical product, not a setting in the Spotify app. When Spotify announced U.S. availability in 2022, it described the device as requiring a phone with mobile data and a Spotify Premium account. Its features included physical presets, a touchscreen, voice control, queue management, and handling phone calls and other media. Those details describe a distinct hardware product, not a restoration of Car View. Spotify’s device directory currently labels Car Thing “No longer supported,” so it is not a dependable purchase recommendation. How to use Spotify in a car now
Spotify’s current car guidance lists several connection routes. The best fit depends on the phone, car or stereo, and the controls available in that vehicle. Spotify: Spotify in the car.

If all you need is hands-free playback, Google Assistant, Siri, or the vehicle’s voice controls may be useful where supported. Voice recognition can be less reliable in road noise or without a good connection, so set up playback before moving.

Set up playback without handling the phone while driving
- While parked, connect the phone using Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, AUX, USB, or a built-in vehicle app, depending on what the car supports.
- Choose the playlist, album, podcast, or audiobook before setting off.
- Use steering-wheel controls, voice controls, or the car’s infotainment interface when available.
- Do not manually browse Spotify on the phone while the vehicle is moving. Follow local distracted-driving laws; a simplified interface does not make phone interaction automatically safe or lawful.
Spotify likewise advises setting up the service before driving and avoiding interaction with a mobile device while the car is in motion. Spotify’s car guidance.
If Spotify does not work in the car
- Check that Spotify and the connected devices are updated.
- Confirm the phone has an internet connection when the setup requires one.
- Restart Spotify.
- Turn the car or stereo off and on again.
- If the problem continues, delete and reinstall Spotify.
- For a persistent connection or compatibility problem, contact the vehicle or stereo manufacturer.
