Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Netflix video plays but you hear nothing, first check mute and volume, try a second title, and switch the title’s audio to Stereo. Those quick tests help distinguish a title-specific problem from a mismatch among Netflix, your playback device, and your TV or sound system. Restarting the device and temporarily connecting it straight to the TV can narrow the cause further.
First, identify where the problem is
Before changing settings, compare Netflix with another title and another app. The pattern points to the most useful next test:
| What you notice | What it suggests | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Only one Netflix movie or episode is silent | A title-specific audio issue | Try another title; if it has sound, report the affected title to Netflix. |
| Every Netflix title is silent, but other apps have sound | A Netflix audio choice, app, or device-output issue | Check mute and volume, select Stereo, and restart the device. |
| Other apps are silent too | The TV, device, speakers, audio system, or connection may be responsible | Test the TV’s own speakers and another input or app. |
| Netflix is silent in a browser, but other browser audio works | The Netflix tab may be muted, or the issue may be browser-specific | Unmute the tab and try another supported browser. |
| Sound returns when the streaming device is connected directly to the TV | The receiver, soundbar, or connection between components is implicated | Check the external system’s input, audio format, and HDMI or optical path. |
This guide covers video that plays without sound. If the screen is black as well, use Netflix’s black-screen troubleshooting instead; that is a different playback problem.
Try these fixes in order
- Raise volume while the title is playing. On a phone or tablet, adjust media volume—not ringtone volume. Check the TV, streaming device, soundbar or receiver, and computer volume. A Netflix volume indicator changing does not guarantee that the TV or soundbar is unmuted.
- Check every mute and output point. Confirm the TV and external audio system are not muted and that a receiver or soundbar is on the correct input. On a computer, check system output, application volume, and whether the browser tab playing Netflix is muted.
- Play another Netflix title. If other shows or movies have sound, follow the title-reporting steps below rather than changing working equipment.
- Choose Stereo in Netflix. Start playback, open Audio & Subtitles, and select an option marked Stereo instead of 5.1, if available. If sound returns, the selected surround format or connected equipment’s configuration may be incompatible.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio temporarily. Headphones, a speaker, or car audio may be receiving sound instead of the TV or device speaker. Turn Bluetooth off or disconnect the paired device, then test again.
- Restart the playback device fully. Turn it off rather than only returning to the home screen. If it has a power cable, unplug it, wait about 15 seconds, reconnect it, and try Netflix again. For some smart TVs, Netflix’s instructions say to unplug the TV, press its power button once, wait one minute—or leave it unplugged for three minutes—then reconnect it.
- Isolate the audio connection. If you use a receiver or soundbar, temporarily connect the streaming device directly to the TV by HDMI. If practical, reseat the cable or reverse its ends; then try another HDMI port. Test with another compatible cable only after these checks.
- Update or reinstall Netflix only if the earlier checks do not help. Repeated app reinstalls are unlikely to fix silence in other apps or a problem that disappears when external audio equipment is bypassed.
Netflix notes that device audio-setting paths vary by manufacturer, so exact labels can differ by model and software version. See its general no-sound troubleshooting for device-specific guidance.

Check surround sound and audio format
Netflix 5.1 surround sound requires support from the title, the streaming device, and the connected audio equipment. Not every title, language, device, or downloaded title offers it. A title page may show a 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus indicator when surround audio is available; the absence of that indicator does not mean ordinary stereo audio is broken. Netflix explains 5.1 audio requirements and audio and subtitle availability.
Stereo is a diagnostic, not a promise that it is the best permanent setting for every system. If stereo restores sound, the selected surround format, receiver, soundbar, or device output configuration is a likely compatibility point. Users of assistive-listening equipment or voice-clarifying headsets may need to set the streaming device’s output to Stereo or Linear PCM, as Netflix notes in its audio troubleshooting guidance.

- Downloaded titles: Netflix downloads do not support 5.1 surround sound. A missing 5.1 choice on a download is not itself a fault.
- Language choices: A title may offer 5.1 in one language but not another.
- Windows computers: Netflix identifies 5.1 support on Windows 10 or later through Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app; support also depends on the title and audio setup.
Device-specific audio checks
Use these paths as compatibility tests. Manufacturers can change menu names across models and software versions.
Smart TV
- Power-cycle the TV and check its mute, volume, speaker selection, and audio-output setting.
- If using a soundbar or receiver, check its selected input and reseat HDMI or optical connections.
- Try Netflix through the TV’s built-in speakers or temporarily bypass the external audio system.
- In Netflix playback, test Audio & Subtitles → Stereo.
Roku TV or Roku player
- On Roku, open Home → Settings → Audio.
- Set Audio mode → Stereo.
- Where available, set HDMI → PCM-Stereo. If HDMI is not shown, set S/PDIF → PCM-Stereo.
- Reseat the HDMI cable, try another port, and bypass any receiver or sound system for a test.
These are Netflix’s Roku audio troubleshooting steps. Roku’s TV connection guidance recommends High Speed HDMI for 720p/1080p setups and Premium High Speed HDMI for 4K/HDR setups.

Open Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format → Change Format. Try Dolby Digital 5.1; if that does not restore sound, return to the same menu and try Stereo. The steps come from Netflix’s device troubleshooting guidance.
Xbox
From the home screen, press the Xbox button and open Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output. Under HDMI audio, try 5.1 Uncompressed or 7.1 Uncompressed. If neither produces sound, test the other option or return to a stereo-compatible output. Menu choices depend on the connected equipment; see Netflix’s Xbox audio steps.

Android phone or tablet
- Start Netflix playback, then raise the device’s media volume.
- Check whether Bluetooth is routing sound to earbuds, a speaker, or car audio. Disconnect it temporarily as a test.
- Restart the phone or tablet and reopen Netflix.
Computer browser
- Confirm the computer is using the intended speakers or headphones and that system and application volume are up.
- Check the mute icon on the Netflix browser tab.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio temporarily, restart the browser, and try another supported browser.
- If other browser audio is also failing, check the computer’s operating-system and audio-driver updates.
Fire TV, set-top box, or another streaming device
Check the device’s audio-output mode, test Stereo in Netflix, and restart the device fully. Connect it directly to the TV, then try another HDMI port if needed. Consult the device maker for the exact audio menu labels.

A picture can pass through an HDMI chain even when the selected audio format or connection is not working. Bypassing a receiver or soundbar is a diagnostic step: it helps determine whether the problem is in that component or the TV’s direct input, not necessarily a recommendation to leave the system disconnected.

- Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.
- Confirm HDMI or optical cables are firmly connected at both ends; reverse the ends where practical.
- Connect the Netflix device directly to the TV, bypassing the receiver or soundbar.
- Try another HDMI port. If the direct connection works, check the external system’s input, audio-output format, and ARC/eARC or optical connection.
- If possible, test the Netflix device on another TV. If it has sound there, focus on the original TV, port, or audio setup.
If TV speakers work but a soundbar does not, verify that the soundbar is on the correct input and that the TV’s audio output points to it. Check that the cable uses the intended ARC/eARC port if that is how the equipment is connected. The test can narrow the problem; it does not establish that ARC/eARC is necessarily at fault.
If only one Netflix title has no sound
When other Netflix shows and movies play normally, report the affected title instead of replacing equipment. Netflix directs subscribers to report an individual title from account Viewing Activity. Use its no-sound help page for the reporting route.
If the sound is not completely absent
Distorted, static, delayed, or unusually quiet audio needs a symptom-specific diagnosis rather than the no-sound steps alone. Netflix has separate guidance for choppy, stuttering, high-pitched, or distorted sound, static or hissing, audio out of sync, quiet voices with normal background sound, and Netflix volume that is unusually low.
If voices are quiet while effects are audible, test Stereo first; a surround mix or center-channel setting may be involved. That symptom is different from a title producing no audio at all.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen to contact Netflix or the device maker
- Contact Netflix when one title is silent but other titles work, or when the issue remains specific to Netflix after device volume, Stereo, restart, and connection checks.
- Contact the TV, streaming-device, receiver, soundbar, or computer maker when other apps or the TV’s own inputs also lack sound, or device output remains incompatible after the isolation tests.
- Do not keep reinstalling Netflix if the TV menus or another input are also silent, another device works on the same TV, or direct connection changes the result.
Try another port, direct connection, and a known-good compatible cable before buying replacement equipment. A new streaming box cannot correct a muted TV, wrong receiver input, unsupported format, or faulty soundbar. If a cable is visibly damaged or a test isolates it as the cause, follow the device maker’s cable recommendation; for example, Roku specifies different HDMI cable classes for 720p/1080p and 4K/HDR setups in its TV requirements.
